Finally almost done, just need to figure out the mirrors.....
« on: September 08, 2020, 07:00:40 PM »
Took more resources than originally anticipated but here it is in almost finished stage. Just missing side mirrors as required by CA law.

What do you guys use besides handlebar end mirrors with this setup? Which bar end mirrors do you guys prefer? I prefer going above instead of below the handlebar. Let's see your bar end mirrors.

I have a single Napleon on my GS1100E and it's very high quality, looking for another.  You can adjust them easily by rotating into several positions, up, out, down,1/4, 3/4.

Real ones are a little bit pricey on eBay but I think worth it, but reproductions are available too.

Mine is this type, but matte black. I think it's the AP-104 like this...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Napoleon-Baren-Motorcycle-Mirror-AP-104/114399090188?hash=item1aa2b7960c:g:LWMAAOSwTdNfUw0g

I see them listed as 'Tanax Barran' with same #, chrome or black.

My bike's currently in the shop so I can't check but this seems to be the one.

Wow, $50 for one mirror 😅

true, not cheap but experience has taught me with stuff like this you really do get what you pay for

the cheap chinese ones ( maybe $30 a pair ) might look the same - this or other designs - but

the hardware that holds the arm to the bars will be rubbish - probably little better than the sort of expanding bolt you put into a brick wall to hold a shelf up

the finish- especially black - won't last, it will flakew off, if its chrome, it'll rust straight away

they'll need adjusting all the time as they won't do up properly

the mirror glass ( if its glass and not plastic) will fall out from time to time

the screws that hold the mirror frame to the arm will be behind the mirror glass ( which kind of makes it handy when the glass falls out, you can tighten those screws up...)

whatever fasteners/bolts they provide to hold it on/together will rust almost immediately

ask me how i know this...............

i have in the past used genuine Stadium bar ends and they were lovely, fitted easy, worked perfectly and stayed unrusty for the whole time i used them

also above the bars is where i've found best to mount them, and outboard of the ends of the grips, doesn't look as good as inboard and under but in that position can't actually see them, so thay satisfy legal requirements but bugg3r all else
i blame Terry

Yes, I read it somewhere that there is a coupler that needs to be swapped for switching places? Or it is just a straight unscrew and switch? I just didn't bother because the line was already on it from taking it off before. I will probably do it when I need to work on the brakes next time

And thank you all for the suggestions. I will try to find a set from Japan. Found one on Amazon but it is in Japanese LOL. I think the sizing goes by the ID of the handlebar

Good luck.  I ended up buying that one for $50 as it's the original.  The one I have is from the 80's and it still looks new.  Your bike looks great and deserves it!

Now that is a real bike  ;)  Do you have to use a 4 point harness with it?

Thanks, I found the mirrors in Japan and ordered 2 pairs for $90 a pair shipped via DHL. I figured since I am paying $$$hipping I might as well get a pair for the JDM K1 that we are going to work on next.

Thanks.  Not 5 minutes ago I got the call from the tuner 184 HP.  Same # as its best top speed of 184 MPH at Bonneville in '96.  Going to pick it up, it's been 2 months and I'm so eager to get it.  Not sure what boost he ran, racing it ran 25 lbs but I told the tuner to take it easy, I want to live haha.

I can't even imagine what it is like to try and launch the bike even though I am sure there is turbo lag. Probably keeping the front from coming up fast is the biggest worry.

Apparently I bought the last of the mirrors until they get more in stock. For those looking for it, I got them here - https://japan.webike.net/products/47822.html

Wow, thank you guys. I didn't even know about BOTM. The bike is not a full restored, just fixing and cleaning it up, ride it like I stole it  :)  It sat for 39 years, lots of miles of riding to catch up. It's pity the mirrors won't be here for another 2 weeks, can only "test ride" around the neighborhood

Thanks, Andy. The fairing is a handmade copy of the Titan fairing with some minor changes. Everything is handmade so it is not exactly symetrical  :-[ But that is the way I preferred for the Valley Green K1. I have a complete set of new Airtech fairing and bracket so I copied their idea piece some hardware together for the bracket. It is mounted to the gas tank tabs on the frame with eye to eye turnbuckle. I will be having a friend welding together a more permanent bracket once I am satisfied with the position and angle.
I will have a more symetrical unit made for my JDM Candy Ruby Red K1 on the next run based on what I learned from this one.

Btw the complete Airtech fairing kit is still available for sale here - http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,183698.msg2126537.html#msg2126537

Very nice job.  Got me looking up 'Titan' fairings and found this gem.

https://www.returnofthecaferacers.com/honda-cafe-racer/honda-cb550-racer/

I have a full fairing for the turbo GS1100E but hate to hide the engine. It was used for Bonneville runs, has twin headlights, have looked and looked to find out what it is, but to no avail.  In general I like fairings, but like the air cooled motor to show off, so yours is just right.  It sort of looks like something a British bike might have used but it suits the CB750 well.

Anyone interested...the fairing is apparently a copy of a fairing sold by the Read Titan company, but was actually manufactured by a british company called Churchgate.  I know all this as I own an original Churchgate fairing that was purchased as part of a body kit, including fiber glass tank, seat, tail section, clip ons and rearsets, sold by the Read Titan company.  It's really difficult to find information on this old, very rare stuff.  What I know has been provided by members of this forum Ricky Racer and G.Schuld, and the original owner that I purchased this stuff from several years ago.  I will be building a cb750 with this stuff.  Most of the parts have been collected.  Just gotta get her a good spot in the project queue.

I would be interested if it was designed(width and length) for the CB750 and reasonably priced. The original Titan was too long, the bottom side lips extend all the way to almost the end if the gas tank. I am short legged at 5' 5" and it still hits my knee. When I was looking around, the cheapest and the closest fit was the CR750 fairing. Compared to what I have now, it is still a lot more money than what it cost me. I would say if I were to make it available for sale on a special order basis, it would be around $850 complete with windshield, nose cone, leather inside cover and mounting bracket with headlight. The windshield and nose cone aren't Guftasson quality but it fits the individualy handmade motive.  :-[

Desert, my original was designed to be used with a different gas tank and seat.  The tank is a good 4 or 5 inches longer than a stock k0-k6 tank.  My above post was a call out for interest in information, not parts.  None of this original stuff is easily available.  You do realize custom aftermarket parts have been available for the cb750 nearly from the get go?  I think the stuff I have was originally purchased in '71 or '72 and was used on a k0
