Any Scottish Highlanders Members?
« on: September 26, 2020, 04:32:07 AM »
I’m looking for average internet download and upload speeds. I’m going to be renting an airbnb somewhere, not sure where yet, in the highlands for two weeks (for self isolation according to current UK rules) and will need to work during that time. Would be cool to know if there’s fast enough internet over there for me. I download and upload large amounts of files to our work servers. I will of course contact the airbnb hosts but still would like to get an overall picture.

I live in the highlands, and speeds vary depending where you are. I have never had a problem and work from home just now between travelling. It’s no different anywhere else really but depends upon internet suppler and package the owners have?.

If you don’t mind, would you post up your speeds from Speedtest.net or some internet speed test? Here in Connecticut I get 100mb download and 11mb upload. Not amazing but good enough for my work.

dave, you'd need to ask your air bnb host as it depends on the specific location, the connection they have and local infra like their modem.

generally speaking the connection can be good but but can also be crappy - just depending on what's installed and paid for at that particular place. pretty much like anywhere else.
i am on a canoeing forum where a lot of members are from scotland, some of them living in the highlands and many of them work in IT related jobs which is done from home now so i guess it works for them. i also privately use a hosting provider which is based in glasgow. scotland's really not the end of the world  ;)

Haha, good to hear! Although for this airbnb stay I’m kind of looking for an “end of the world” type place, haha.

My sister is in Edinburgh and she has pretty fast internet, obvious since it’s a major city. I’ve been to the highlands once before and I vaguely remember some issues but yeah, definitely depends on the particular place.

Thanks guys

I’m not sure yet. The plan is to spend a month over there. Two weeks in the highlands and then down to Edinburgh to visit my sister. I had stayed in Newtonmore before so maybe I’ll look for places on the east coast. I love it up there so it doesn’t really matter to me.

Hotel might have fast Internet but if there are 50 clients connected, the speed will not be that good. Maybe PC, pads an telephones. People have lots of wifi devices that they might use.

Depends on the routers too. Some routers can deliver same speed as the slowest  connected device that slows down for all others.

I work from home with my connection of 100/10Mb, real measured mostly 95/10. Work fine, I have no need uploading huge files all the time.

I use wireless. 5Ghz band is a must to get that speed, if router or your computer only support 2.4 Ghz, max speed will slow down to around 20 Mb, maybe slower depending on your computer's wifi card.

5Ghz has not that coverage as 2.4Ghz has.

If most of the others are out when you need to work can be a good thing ;)

I was in Edinburgh in 1974. It was a much simpler place then, my dad's rich old auntie died and left my dad a small fortune. My dad bought a book called "Europe on $10 a day" and we spent 3 months in Europe and Britain. (I preferred Europe) We stayed in a B&B in Edinburgh, and I was in an attic room looking out onto the cobbled street. At night I had a beautiful view of Edinburgh Castle which was floodlit, and looked magnificent.

Every morning I was awoken very early by a kilt wearing "milko" who had a horse drawn milk float, that would clip clop up the cobbled street at walking pace, while the milko would sprint from house to house dropping milk bottles at each door. I'd bought a .177 calibre air pistol while in England, so one morning as the milko was delivering his milk, I lined up the horse and shot it in the arse. The horse bolted like a racehorse, bottles of milk were flying out of the float and smashing all over the road, and the milko was running after the horse screaming at it to stop. It was quite the spectacle.

I still feel terrible about it........... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Hey all, just felt like updating this post. I’m currently in Scotland and have been since last month. I’ll be leaving soon. Internet wasn’t a huge problem up in the highlands. I could email, send small files, watch Netflix and YouTube and even do my zoom meetings on the BT “high speed” internet. I put it in quotes because it’s rated at 7Mbps download and less than 1Mbps upload, something like 800Kbps. When I needed to upload large files I would tether from my phone which I got a pay as you go O2 SIM card. Full service up here and the tethering is pretty fast actually.

I'll look out for a pants-less, shirt-less returned traveller smuggling heaps of bottles of scotch, on an upcoming episode "US Border Security". ;D

No problem Dave, just slip a bottle of 21 year old Glenfiddich my way mate, and there'll be no "Wanted" posters with pictures of a near naked man with an unusually heavy suitcase......... ;D
