“New to Me” 1975 Chopper
« on: January 29, 2021, 01:12:19 PM »
So yesterday morning I set off to Tilbury Ontario, to visit Maurice and Gisèle Damphousse. About 400 kilometres from home. One stretch of highway was blowing snow, whiteout. Fortunately only about a 20k stretch! Took along a good buddy (serious hotrodder and vintage drag racer), stopped and ate some real junk food, along the way. Based on three poor quality photos, set off to buy my very first CB750 powered chopper!

Maurice built the bike in 1975. I believe it’s an AMEN frame, and he bought the complete front and and fuel tank from Tony Carlini Cycle Creations in Dearborn Michigan, along with lots of other Carlini parts. He did all his own assembly and paint (Maurice’s Shop is also full of beautifully restored, vintage tractors). The engine is and early one (cb750E-1020742). It was also built by a nearby shop Carlini used, Hendley Performance. Lots of chrome and a big set off Mikuni carbs.

Maurice had a mild stroke a few years ago, keeps it clean, but hasn’t ridden it since. He had a new battery in it, and has been running it regularly. Petcocks “”ON”, pull up the enricher lever, push the button and it fired instantly. 70 psi oil pressure and smooth. Wow.

No turnsignals or speedometer, it will need some updating. There’s a legitimate Ontario Ownership, so Transfer should be no issue. Passing a “safety” and getting insurance might be a challenge, but I’m not really sure what I’m going to do with it. For now, a “3,000 mile tune up”, oil and filter, and some cleaning, polishing, and grease. It looks really solid and fantastic. I’m just delighted! If anyone sees any details they can add, much appreciated!

Wonderful find. Congratulations! My keen eye spotted a K0 Sandcast bike in the back. Can't wait to hear the story on that one.

Sorry about that. The bike is so long and my shop is narrow. Can’t seem to get back far enough!

Choppa!  Now what are you going to do with that?!  Personally, I wouldnt bother with turn signals or a speedo if he never had those on it. Keep it "period correct"

Do you know when he last rode it ? Obviously  it meant a lit to him , he kept it nice all these years.
I bet he was happy with who it went to....

Looks great and sooo clean. Sure some guys here may want more info on those carbs someday. Maybe from a Kaw 650/900 or Suzuki or maybe some nice smooth bores. Is the engine running a big bore kit ?

Thanks guys! He rode it three years ago and ran it regularly.
Probably will skip the speedo, unless a Honda drive can fit the front hub (I have lots). Stunning rim.
Same with turn signals, they just won’t look right.
The key box is nicely done, maybe paint it red?
Gorgeous oil tank. Fits so well with the battery it is probably a AMEN?
Details are amazing. Raised bolts on all the covers, chain roller on the frame, all neat stuff.
Maurice was pleased I was so keen on it. My son likes it too!

It is the Amen oil tank.. wiring box underneath if Anen should be chrome.   Maybe their coil box on frame, but box behind it is not from Amen..

Frank.... the switch box up front is aluminum and I think it’s homemade. Same for the box under the tank. I haven’t looked yet, but I guess it’s regulator, fuse box etc under there? It would be neater if everything was below and just the coils up top. Probably will just leave it as is.....

I got a spare set of these carbs with the chopper. I’ll check them for actual numbers and post a photo.

Nice bike!
It will get a project thread?
Ride it as is this season to figure out what to do next winter?

Speedo and blinkers on that bike is as fart in the church?
Easier to ride as fast as possible and avoid tickets and be visible when changing lanes.
There are lots of good alternatives.

I have never been a chopper guy, I should have a look at the Big Dog bikes and see how they did it.

The parts bike was the real score here?

PeWe..... the chopper was a very fair deal. The parts bike was just an “add on”........

I believe that in Ontario, if the original bike had signals it has to have them to pass a safety inspection. Mirrors... same thing but cops can ticket you if removed (again relative to original bike) - I got that ticket once, had to mount mirrors and bring it to the cop shop to cancel it so no memory of what would happen if I didn't. Of course I took them off afterwards. That CB77 never had signals so that was OK.
Of course, as always, a suitable cash donation to a mechanic can get almost anything passed.
I think all licensed street bikes must have a front brake and horn.
Lots of things checked in the inspection, these are in the legislation (available online).
"Bikers" gave up on choppers years ago and now ride stock tractors, there were too many regulations about things often modified on choppers that cops could stop and "harass" them for... bar height above seat (with riders weight on seat), signals, mirrors, horn...

here is my two scents on lighting up a chopper. I have had people stop in traffic to engage with me, take pictures, they impede traffic, they have pissed off other drivers and it leads to erratic driving. Modern LEDS are so small now a days that it doesn't make sense not to have them. People are too busy looking at your rolling relic through the intersection that they forget the laws of traffic or that they are even driving. I like that my old chopper lights up like a christmas tree. It's the only upgrade I think they should get since they are almost invisible and dont take away from the bike and only improve functionality and visibility.
