So it looks like the bike had a K0 front hub as it has a narrow shoulder. I replaced it with a later model wide shoulder hub. Do I just need a wider gear box retainer cover, or do I need additional parts? I'm guessing the black hub is a 44601-300-030 with a 44643-300-000 retainer.

1972 Suzuki GT380 I had charge of it for a year in 1973 while my friend was deployed and learned to love street riding....
New CB450 K7 after my friend returned...
New CB750 K5 Planet Blue, demise by ex cousin in law at 9,000 miles...
New CB750 K6 Anteres Red, to replace the totaled K5, I sold this K6 at 45k in 1983, I had heavily modified it, many great memories on it and have missed it greatly.....

It looks like I'm back where I started. But forks have been rebuilt, both wheels respoked with cleared hubs, new fenders front and rear, new bars and controls, gauges rebuilt, new wiring harness, ignition and coils.

Is there a "proper" way to torque the fork caps? Seems like I read something once about torquing the forward one first?

Got my gauges installed and my headlight bucket threw up a bunch of wires!

The K2 came both ways with the fork caps (hence the arguments...). Mine was made 11/71, and it had them "backward" [so says the internet today] right from the crate. The K2 that came after 3/72 build changes occurred (like, no more Stellite valve guides, new 3-piece piston rings, common clutch hub with 7 plates OEM) also had the fork caps on the other way, with the gaps at the back.

...but not always, out of their crates...so, look closely at yours to see if they are marked "F". If so, that side goes to the front, and torque down the side that meets the faces flush first, then the other one. If you have the early "F"-marked ones, you might also find that they like one fork better than the other side: some were hand-finished with a flat file on one side so they were the same width as the fork leg lower.

Back in 76 and 77 when I was parts manager and had to join in the late night set up parties we were all required to attend into the late night sessions because of the sales numbers of bikes going out the door, it was explained to me to have the gap to the rear, the reason for that was so any sand/road grime wouldn't be pushed into the forward gap and cause corrosion to happen. (It might have been in the assembly manual??, which only the dealers would get)
The caps in 76 and 77 came with a F or sometimes a dot to the front, which coincided with the taller mating surface. Put a straight edge on the mating surfaces of the caps to see the difference in heights.

No dots or F. Flipped them around a few times and didn’t notice much difference. Torqued the front and then the rear and let it be. Thanks guys!

Put some "jewelry" on the tank and sidecovers. Tried to put the petcock on the tank. Ran a tap through the fiber washer to keep from splitting them. The 6x28 screws were too short. Checked the parts book and yep, that's what they called for. Noticed Yamiya has a pair of 6x35 screws in the parts section for tanks, so I ordered those. Spent about an hour bending the "R" Honda emblem to fit on the left side. Kept it under a heat lamp between bends and had no problems. Put everything on the bike for motivation!
