Terry, you are a living proof that you do not need to be a rocket scientist to service and ride a Rocket! ;)

I'm still waiting for spring, hopefully 2 weeks more enough, but probably a month based on last years.

I look forward to do 23 rides in around 6 months minus rainy days ;D

Yesterday was our first day over 60° so I rode the 77' KZ 1000LTD out for a ride and lunch. After about 15 miles the KZ 1000 had some gremlins in the lighting circuits so we turned around and went back to switch bikes. Paul was riding the 84' Interceptor 1000 and switched to the 80' GS 1100E. I took the 82' CB 900F and we went to get lunch. It was nice to have a decent ride again, it's been awhile. 8)

Thanks Per, I worked part time at a gas station in the 80’s with a guy who was a qualified rocket scientist who was one of the dumbest people I’d ever met, he was married with a couple of kids but on welfare, because for all of his university degrees he was unemployable as Oz didn’t even have a space program.

The Rocket III has grown on me, I never wanted one as I just looked at them as another big cruiser when they came out, and only bought it from my brother because he needed the cash, and the deal was that he would eventually buy it back, but over the years I’ve become quite attached to it. It really is an awesome thing to ride.

I’m really looking forward to receiving the new rectifier for the T500 so I can get some rides in on it before the weather turns to sh1t again, it’s such an antisocial bike in comparison to most of my other bikes, and surprisingly quick, it’ll be interesting to do a decent ride on it soon and see how well (or otherwise) it goes. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I am a year behind you and I figured out a while back what it takes to feel good.  Control my weight, get regular effective exercise that gets me breathing and the heart pumping, lay off garbage food and alcohol, and don't do stupid stuff like smoking or vaping.  And keep learning.  I didn't see those tips in the article, but those are the ones that work.

I read that article too.  It's a topic that I think about a lot more these days, and the main reason I've committed to riding more.

I'm turning 66 this year and hope that I'm still riding at 80.  I know that I won't go to a gym, so I got a 3 days a week job at Home Depot.  Lots of walking, bending and lifting.  When I'm not working, I'm busy here at home.  Lots of hobbies, gardening, yard work.  I live on a wooded lot so always something needs cutting or clearning.  Trying to keep the mind sharp with reading and keeping up some light duty computer work.  I maintain several websites for friends and still have a single client website to look after.

I guess I'm following the "Use it, or loose it" plan. Lol

I took my old Sporty for ride #13 today. I can't remember when I rode it last, and while I hadn't decided which bike I'd ride until I opened the door of my storage unit, I decided that the old beast needed a run. As is always the case, it fired right up and settled into an idle while I put my jacket and helmet on. I took off, and stopped at the first gas station to put 5 litres of standard (it doesn't like high octane fuel) then headed up the highway to Wallan, did the loop and ended up at the chicken shop in Kilmore for lunch.

I wasn't hungry so I just ordered a couple of dim sims and a small serve of chips, but of course the lovely staff brought me out a huge (to me) box of food. I bought a bottle of Sarsparilla to wash it down, I really love sarsparilla, if I ever give up drinking (unlikely) I'll drink sarsparilla to get me thru withdrawal.

Sportster Saturday 25 March 2023 1 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I took off again and rode down thru Wandong, where I stopped for a quick pic.

Sportster Saturday 25 March 2023 2 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

When I took off I gave it the berries as there were some cars approaching, and I managed to do an unintentional "Burnout/wheelie" manoeuvre, as I spun the back wheel in gravel on the side of the road, then the back tyre hooked up and the front wheel came up in the air. I kept the power on, and eventually it settled back down, but I was impressed, it's a torquey old thing. Definitely a keeper. ;D

Sound advice.  My "check engine light" came on a few years ago, and I'm not talking about the one on the motorcycle.  I made major changes and I've stuck with them.  I'll be 60 this year and feeling pretty good.  I want to keep riding as long as I can.  I think the main things are to watch your diet and keep moving.

Ride #12 - 74 miles

Blue Bike, Bluebonnets and a big bird...

Two weeks since my last ride.  Was out of town for a few days and then the weather got cold and cloudy.  Beautiful weather the last two days and it's wildflower season here.

Today I rode down past the gypsum mine, headed for town for some gas.  Then detoured back north to the Willow City Loop.  I kept hearing it was THE place to see Texas Bluebonnets.  I rode the loop twice last year looking for them, but there were no bluebonnets or any other wildflowers there to be seen.  It was really dry last year and they didn't make an appearance.  They showed up this year.  Lots of cars and bikes out with people stopping to take photos...myself included.  I had to look up what the white flowers were.  Pretty sure they're prickly poppies.  The red/orange flowers are what they call Indian paintbrushes.

I would have loved to stay out longer, but had some stuff to do.  I'm going to try to get out again during the week, but the weather doesn't look promising.

Some places in south Texas, but it's pretty sparse down south.  Especially the closer you get to the coast.  I'm in Central Texas.  Looks a lot like some of the places around here.  Looks like southeast, Texas around Victoria and Goliad, and even places up north outside of DFW and east of Abilene.  According to Texas Parks & Wildlife Texas has 10 different ecoregions.

Ha ha, I wish I was sometimes Bud, I certainly wouldn't be eating dim sims and chips, I'd be hooking into one of those magnificent burgers, or chicken dishes, or Mexican, God how I love Mexican food! I am in Victoria, but not the city of Victoria, the state. Bobby Rohr (BobbyR here, RIP mate) was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam who flew a lot of our Special Forces guys in and out of operations, and he likened Aussies to Texans, and if I lived in the US, Texas seems like a pretty good place to be. I'm looking forward to my 2025 Route 66 ride, with luck I might even make it to Texas. ;D

Got a break in the weather and had a fantastic day out on the bike yesterday.  80+ miles for ride #8.  Most of the month has been cold and rainy and saw lots of standing water along the road.  It's been pretty close to typical Ohio weather in March, but with some extra rain thrown in for good measure.

At any rate, was close to 62°F by mid afternoon, with very light wind.  Bike was running great, I'm loving the factory fairing on the xj650, just enough wind protection without being too much.  I'm thinking the old Yamaha is happy to be out on the road after being stored away for so much of it's life, clock says 7593 miles now!

66 goes through (or it used to) Amarillo.  You can stop at The Big Texan restaurant and take the 72-ounce Steak Challange.  If you eat the whole thing, it's free!

A little bit too heavy meal.
2041 grams. Over 2 kg!!
That's the painful way to hospital.

I prefer 300 grams of meat, 10oz OK too. (not more)
Tenderloin, rib-eye steak (Entrecote here) as tasty examples.
Medium rare. This with tasty potatoes in any form. Sweet potatoes too. Plus onions, mushrooms and a tasty gravy.

A 300 grams juicy burger will be fine too.
In worst case order a tripple whopper ;D ;D
BBQ pig ribs tasty too. ;D

I have visited a restaurant in Sao Paolo Brazil where we could eat as much meat we wanted.
Waiters came to table with a sword where one kind of bbq or fried meat was stuck in various grade of cooking. Rare, medium rare, well done.  They cut slices direct to my plate.

Very soon another waiter arrived with different kind of meat.
My stomach  really got a torture that afternoon.
They had a table with stuff to add to the meat.

It taste better with different things on plate, not too much meat.

It was a stop sign on table to set when full. It had green or red status.

They have a Brazilian steakhouse chain in the US called Fogo de Chao that serves meat on a stick like that, sliced at the table.  I haven’t been to one or the Big Texan restaurant.  I try to stay about 6-8 oz when I’m eating red meat.

I’m away from my CB at the moment and missing an early season ride, and I am envious and reminded by all of your riding exploits and also by this mural at the Shrimp Shack at 26.6N in the 33966…. and I have followed my usual bad habit of photographing my meal when I have finished, sorry. It’s hot and muggy, just as well I’m not riding, traffic and drivers are both bad, but the beaches and seafood are very nice.

Hey Bud, do they do a 7 ounce steak challenge? That’s even probably more than I can eat sadly? I’m really looking forward to eating some American food, I love cooking so have ordered some cornmeal from Amazon and am going to try making some cornbread with bacon, cheese and chillies in my waffle maker. I prefer savoury meals to sweet stuff, and have been watching lots of American Youtube cooking shows, so hopefully it won’t taste like sh1t….. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Are you sure you're not in Texas, Terry?  Sure looks like it.

I'm looking forward to my 2025 Route 66 ride, with luck I might even make it to Texas. ;D

Terry..... I’m not a Harley fan, but that bike looks just right! Just drone from Cairns to Port Douglas this afternoon and the roads here are fantastic. Too bad I’m driving a Toyota!!

Thanks John, I’m not necessarily a “Harley” fan, I just like bikes and love V twins. (There’s a Ducati, another RC51 and a Honda Firestorm in my garage). Dion offered me another Sporty yesterday, I have a 1275 kit, big cams and “Buell” heads, and would love to build a hotrod Sporty, so I’m thinking about it…. ;D
