I have put 550 miles on the bike and not one issue. It sure is a joy to ride. With the low motor and stance the bike is really easy to handle. I took it out to the PO who sold it to the deceased guy I got it from. He said he could recognize the sound as I drove down the highway to his home. This winter I will be doing fork seals, polish the legs and new tires. It really doesn't need much else.

That's terrific news Johnie.  I'm glad to hear that you are planning on keeping it around, at least for a while.

Thanks guys! I couldn't have done it without your help, advice and encouragement. You know I had a 2000 Wing I sold a few years ago and comparing it to this bike I have to say that 1500 with all the bags, trunk and fairing was bulky. This GL seems so light and not over-powering you. Very comfortable and smooth. For being a first generation Wing Mr. Honda sure had some good foresight into the engineering of the early Wing. Yes, I do plan to keep it for a long time. I thought 2 CB750's was all I wanted to keep around, but now it'll stay at 3 bikes. If some of you guys have not had the opportunity to try these first generation Wings you have to give it a try. You will be amazed as I was. Thanks again fellas. I'll continue this thread into a WI winter when I have it back on the lift for a little more improvement.

Not necessarily true, Maui.

"The 1975 Honda Goldwing GL1000 was one of the fastest accelerating production motorcycles of its time, with a 0–60 mph time of 4.9 seconds. It had a top speed of over 120 mph"

The 0-60 time was about the same as the Z1 but did not have the top end of the Z [135mph]

I thought that was done on a later model.

I'm curious how the GL1000 Wing handles the corners at speed;I know it was designed as a touring machine, just curious.  :)

I had a ‘76 for several years and my buddy Gary has a ‘76 in my shop right now. When ridden hard it’s a high performance machine! I suspect it would easily outrun my K1 cb750…..

Everything about the GL1000 can really be summed up with the phrase "Better than you'd expect".  It's heavy, but carries the weight well.  It's not the fastest, but it's closer than you would think.  Come to think of it, it takes a lot of the pros of the CB750 (not the best at any one thing, but a lot of really good things all in one package) and takes it farther.

Suspension may be it's weakest area, if I had to pick one.  I love the look of my spoke wheels, but I think there was a good reason they got dropped after '77.  It can feel a bit "over-engined" for the frame at times, but on the flip side you also have a bike that at times feels like it's got more engine than it needs.

The power curve is a bit unexpected as well.  3500 rpm is a happy cruise speed, and most of your daily driving will take place under 4500.  But because all the power is hiding in the top end, if that's all the riding you do, it feels like a bit of a slug.  Crank it up above 5000, though?  The power delivery literally feels like you hit another gear.  With a redline of 7500-8000 (I forget), you get plenty of room to play.

I've taken my 'wing through the Tail of the Dragon before, and plan to head down again in a couple weeks.  I'm from farm country Michigan, and I'm not used to curves, so I guarantee I didn't ride that route to the ragged edge of my bike's performance.  But that bike handled itself really quite well.

Glad to see you're enjoying yours.  They really are a sweetheart of a bike once you dial them in.
