Topic: Penetrating oil test

I got the April/May edition of Machinist's Workshop magazine yesterday.
Another very talented Lloyd did an interesting test of penetrating oils where he measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices.  Get the issue if you want to see how he did the test.  But, I thought the results he reported interesting.  Maybe you will, too?

Wow.  Thanks TT.  I had always wondered how Liquid Wrench compares to WD40, and it's good to know there's a cheap big gun for extremely rusted fasteners.

In the antique outboarding circles, ATF has been the favorite for releasing gears rusted to shafts, etc. since ATF has lots of dispersants, etc. in it. So, I'm not surprised.

You can use any kind of Automatic Transmission Fluid you want, I suppose.  The acetone thins the fluid viscosity for penetration into tiny crevices, I expect.

What is the relevance of hydrosopic?  (A word I can't find in the dictionary, btw. Did you mean hygroscopic?  )

the atf/acetone would be great in the compressed air cans... they used them at the dealership (dodge) I used to work at as a shop kid (I used the b-word there but gotta play nice here )  First you put the chemical you want to spray (there they used mostly brake clean, here I'd use atf+acetone) and then pressurize it with compressed air.  And it's reuseable.  Dunno where I could pick one up.

I use this stuff from State Chemical called State Pen.

Blew PB and Kryoil out of the water.

It would have been interesting to see how well it went against the ATF Acetone.

You can get the compressed air cans at Harbor Freight Tools, they have a website, harborfreight.com.  I see them on sale all the time in my local store for about 5 or 6 bucks

I showed the results of this test to the auto machinist next door and he was suprised that COKE wasn't mentioned in the test.  He claims that he has had good results with it.

any hardware store or auto supply should carry it with other thinners.

paint store (ex. Benjamin Moore etc) for sure if you cant find it at your auto supply place.
in the paint area of Home Depot, Lowes etc.
and it is labelled ACETONE.

If you need just a little bit, its also called (regular) nail polish remover. .  . . .lol   
('regular' because there is also non-acetone kind)

Look for the super cheap brand because the fancier brands will have 'protein fortifiers', floral scents, etc. The super cheap stuff is literally just acetone.

I was going to buy Nail Polish Remover for $0.99 but then I looked at my Brake Cleaner and the main stuff is acetone.  It even smells like a nail polish remover.  I got a $1.99 aerosol can by ValueCraft at Autozone.  (needed to clean my brakes also)  The name brand stuff don't explicitly say what's in it but this one did.
Acetone is otherwise $13.50/ gallon at my Home Depot. 

When I took organic chemistry, they use plastic squeeze bottle with an angled sprout to store dilluted acetone & clean stuff, $1 maybe.

That link to the $38 pressure can, man, yall rich or something? 
Seriously, like $10 for a single rubber carb boot??  When I read things like that it just discourages me to own a CB.  I couldn't give a rat's ass about OEM sandcast BS.  They should put that on the Rich Guy's Forum.  I mean if you're gonna blow that kinda money on a piece of rubber, why bother coming to this forum.  On a positive note, thanks for putting up a cheap alternative and other homemade stuff.

Your local Dollar Store. Pick up a couple picninc mustard/ketchup bottles. You cut the tip as fine as you want. While your there pick up a trigger spray bottle for soaking large pieces.

ATF and Acetone does work good. ATF, Acetone, Mineral Sprits and kerosene in equal parts works even better. It was designed as a solvent at Frankford Arsenal for government firearms. Its called "Ed's Red". Fellow shooters here will know of it. Its cheap, dissolves carbon and penetrates very well.
