Just wanted to share this, sorry if it’s long.
1973 Honda CB 750 K3
My bike has been running great for 10 years, mostly because I bought it from someone on here and he’s a better mechanic than I will ever be.
Regular tune-ups, oil changes, all the 3k and 6k mile stuff.
A month or so ago I started getting some general rumbling and after fire, etc. could have been the change in the fuel brand, I thought. But, let’s go through the bike again. (possibly my first mistake)
Checked the fuel screen, fine. Checked the points, made a slight adjustment on 2-3. Replaced the plugs because why not. They’re cheap. Checked all the electrical-made sure of spark, etc.
Mind you, this was less than a week from me not knowing to check the draw on my battery during starting to know that the unit was done (again, saved by this forum).
So I went on my way and even reset the air screws on the carbs (turn to stop, one full turn out). I should say in between all these machinations I was starting the bike to see if anything got better.
It got good enough to get me back and forth to work and after a freeway run idled better than ever. Still was “poppy” in the morning though and at low idle. Didn’t start evenly.
Well, today I spent a little more time on it. Turns out I hadn’t adjusted the air screw for #2 back out all the way, the 2-3 points were set waaaay too close, and the 2 spark plug wasn’t set all the way.
This is all to say, when you think you’ve done everything, go back and look again. What was the last adjustment, what did you miss, what did you forget.
For those that read this far, I’m not talking about the certified geniuses on here, just talking about hacks like me. Sometimes, undo everything you just did and start over.
Ride safely
