plug caps
« on: June 24, 2005, 08:21:17 PM »
while replacing my coils a few days ago, I noticed that the plug caps for cylinders 2 and 3 have longer shafts than those that are on 1 and 4. can someone give me ngk part  numbers for these two different size caps, so I can order the correct ones? I found some on ebay, but there are eight different types offered, ranging in size and shape.

I believe they are supposed to be different sizes. mine are. Makes the center ones line up straight and the side ones out the side.

#2 and 3 are straight and 1 and 4 are a 90 degree bend. You can go to www.partsnmore.com and get new caps. Caps seem to be getting expensive lately. Maybe someone knows a cheaper place.

I know this is old, but partsnmore.com is out of stock on the right angle ones, anyone got another source?

On second thought as I read more, the NGK ones are 5kohm, on my cb750k5, I can go without the resistive caps?  And if so, anyone have a link/source for caps and wire?  I think I'm getting lost here looking for specific wire sets/caps.  Guess this is pretty generic cut to fit solid core wires?

I'm running Dyna 7mm supression wires with non-resistor caps, Dyna coils and Dyna S ignition.  I also use non-resistor D8EA plugs.  I talked to the techs at Dyna and they said this configuration was fine.  My understanding is that the resistor configuration is mainly to limit radio interference.  It is required to have resistors in Canada and maybe some other countries, but not in the US.  I had one fouled plug in 3 years which I'm not getting exited about.  It sticks in my mind that you use resistor caps you should not use resistor plugs also.  Maybe others can comment on this...

I wonder what it sounds like when I pass people listening to thier Ipods with FM transmitter while at 7000 RPM? :o

Cool, I'll look into the dyna coils as well, as I just learned today that the honda wires and coils are all one piece, NOOB still learning, and getting sticker shock at the Honda parts counter $237 for the coils, wires and plug caps OUCH

Hey Cincy...
Saw a post here where somone drilled out the old wires from the coil and put in new wires...
Mine are old and don't like getting wet...may give that a try before I shell out that much for coils!

oem is pricy at honda. atleast they still support our bikes some. most others barely support anything 10 years old.

No do not use resistor plugs AND caps. You will get a much weaker spark.

You can also get coils for a cb900 which use replaceable wires. It is a relatively common mod.

Hey Guys...
Has anyone tried an automotive type coil???
The GM coilpacks fire two plugs...and if I remember correctly...are about 1 ohm...
Not sure they would fit...and never considered using one with points...but might be worth a try to see.
I think I have a new one stuck in the parts drawer.

What?  You actually want to hear all those curse words and derogatory remarks?

Could explain why some of the cage drivers are so agressive toward us innocent motorcylists... ::)

Hey Guys...
Agressive is better than the oblivious 20 year old college coeds with a cell phone and a mascara brush...driving 60 with their knees down the turn lane in their BMW...trying to get to their tanning bed appointment!

I already avoid probably 2 accidents in my miata each week on my daily commute, hopefully the straight pipes on the bike will help overcome the stupid drivers around here.

Is anyone having problems with CB750/900 dohc coils on SOHC points system? When I was at Honda UK they told us not to use those coils on points ignion bikes as they would burn out. The points bikes have power to the coils while points are closed, CDI bikes have about 4 amp draw on coil but they are only switched on for a few milliseconds
Just wondering
