So, what was really wrong with the truck?

I think the overdrive went bad. That's easier and cheaper to fix.

Good on ya, Bill. It's too bad they put so many miles on it but it'll hold up just fine with some decent maintenance.

Mickey's right, the over drive in the trans went bad. David thought it was the transfer and had it removed and completely disassembled! ::) Also, the pan was removed from the trans, leaving it opened for over a year (close to 2 years!). Now, I just took it to a Transmission place here in Greenwood and left it with them to reassemble the transfer, replace the trans. (truck now has over 100K miles, because of David. My Dad would have probably only have put maybe about 25-30K on it by now) and go over it for us. Should get it back in a couple of days (maybe Monday or Tuesday)
and then I can use it to go take care of my Dad AND take him places (my poor old minivan, an 06' model, has 98K and fast approaching 100K, while being only 3yrs old this June. :( Put over 10K on my van between July 27 of last year until around Sept of 09'. Then I have been putting about 30 - 60 miles aday, regarding
taking care of my Dad. And that doesn't include the trips out to eat (about 2-3 times a week) and outings that I try to take him on, at least once a week along with Church every Sunday. Not that I'm complaing, mind you. It's just that, my wife and family is left without transportation til I can get one of his vehicles for our (my Dad and my) use.

                              Take care All, Bill ;)

hey Bill, hows about me and a few of the other large, scary looking guys go pay s+s a visit and tell em that staying in the house and keeping your dads possesions might be hazardous to their health? lol,  just KIDDING of course, but i imagine there are times when you would like to do something along those lines.

funny you should say that. i was feeling a bit silly yesterday afternoon, and while the wife was at a clients house, i got put my good kilt, 6 square yards of heavy scottish wool and put it on. i wore a tank top with a skull/crossbones graphic, except instead of cross bones, it was a pair of fenders, a jazzmaster and a duo-sonic.  ;D i dont have a problem with anyones religion BUT i do have a problem with the jehovas witnesses that come to the house (no where near as much since i answered the front door naked 9 years ago) and bug the crap out of me insisting that i listen to them. as i was putting on the elk skin, calf boots the doorbell rang, guess who? i rubbed my hair till it looked like i grabbed a high tension lead coming off a 3 ohm dyna coil then answered the door. these 2 gents' eyes kind of bugged out and they stammered for a few seconds before retreating back down the wheelchair ramp apologizing for bothering me. they acted like marilyn manson, or maybe CHARLIE Manson was after their souls  :D i can also make small children cry by smiling at them heh. i used to have a tee shirt that said "my day isnt complete till i've terrified a total stranger"

There was a pretty good pile of shavings in there and the trans pan had been off of it for around 2yrs (that's how long it's been down). I just figured that, it'd be a good idea (since my Dad was paying for it and was okay with it) to go ahead and get a rebuilt trans (with updates) and get it back on the road (with a better idea of what kind of shape the truck was in, with David having driven AND abused it). Keep in mind that David put at least 80,000 of the 100,000 miles that are on the speedometer and THAT'S not good. David should be the one pating for it, but HE doesn't have any money and, for us, just knowing that David's lost the truck that WOULD have been his, is pretty satisfying. Can't wait for David to find out the the truck is back in action (will be in a few days).

I had a boss who let people have store credit.  Every once in a while, he'd ask if I rode into work.  If yes, he'd have me go to one of the offices in downtown San Francisco.  Wearing my leather jacket at the receptionists desk, I'd say real loud, "So-and-so is way behind on payments.  Is he here?!"
The receptionist would get to work and a guy would run up waving a check.  It always worked.

Bill,
I have not posted to your thread until now. What you are going through hit just way too close to home. My heartfelt best wishes and hope that everything works out for your dad and you. On my side of the fence, it is my mom. Dementia and all. I lost my father four years ago eight days before my birthday. Great present huh? Enjoy EVERY moment you have with him. I miss mine immensely. Look at him as a gift with a time limit. Spend as much time as you can with him so that you will not have to look back later and wish that you had. My prayers are with you.

Thank you very much for your post and I certainly understand your position and, having lost my mom a bit over seven years ago to lung cancer (that ended up spreading) and with my Dad having problems, in addition to David AND his wife. My Mom's passing was as close to my Birthday as yours (My Mom passed on about a month before MY birthday). My heart goes out to you on the loss of your Dad. :(  I AM trying to spend as much time with my Dad, without shortchanging my Daughter and my Wife. Also, I'm trying to give my Dad as much piece of mind as possible.

Definitely appreciate the Prayers as well. Matter of fact, we appreciate and welcome ANY and ALL Prayers because every bit helps. 8) ;)

Well Folks, I went and got the Dakota from getting the transfer reassembled, fetting a rebuilt trans and getting the old thing going again. Also had a defective start sensor. She runs fairly well, considering that the slightly less than 1/4 of a tank of gas was around 2 years ago! ::) Also took them a new battery to put in it as well. After I got it back today, I went and got some Berryman for the injectors and topped off the tank with a load of Premium gas, to help clean out the system. It's got to have tires, alignment, maybe some tierod ends (or other front end parts) because there is a bit of slack up there. Left rearview mirror is broken, driver's side of the seat is broken down and sagging, radio is bad, plastic body piece under the front bumper is broken in several places and the latches on the bed tool box are bent over. Oh, and the heater core has a hole in it that was temp sealed with stopleak. I had talked to my Dad earlier this year, about fixing the truck and selling it. I thought he was going to have a COW! :o He said he needed the truck in case he needed to "Haul" anything! I suggested that I could have a trailer hitch put on his minivan and I thought he was going to have ANOTHER cow! ::) He preceeded to tell me that "He didn't WANT a hitch on his van!" SO, I politely bowed out of THAT converstion and went back to the original plan of getting BOTH of his vehicles back AND we're halfway there! :) I WILL have to say that the old truck (a 93' model) doesn't look half bad. ;)  )Pictures, as soon as I can get to where I have the time AND the capability to post them.

Hey, would this qualify as a "Project"? ???  Just kidding. :D

                                        Take care, Bill ;)

Couple questions.

1. "Berryman"?  I would think after all the talk in carb threads that you'd use Sea Foam.
2. Is there a decent junkyard out there?
3. More of a comment here.  That heater core is probably fixed with the Stop Leak.  But if not, it is cheaper if you remove it and take it to a radiator shop for soldering.

Glad your Dad is feeling well enough to attempt bovine birth. ;D ;D  Hope he wasn't too hard on you.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

#1 I had completely forgotten about the Sea Foam and wanted to get started on getting that "old" gas taken care of soon as possible. I've had pretty good results out of the Berryman and so, that's what I got. Does Wal Mart carry that? O don't remember seeing it,
because if I had seen it, it might have jogged my memory (Maybe?)

#2 Yeah, we've got a few pretty good junk yards in the area and I used one of them a few years ago, when I got in a financial bind and had to pickup on an old 88' GMC Safari minivan that had a few things wrong with it. PO hadn't taken very good care of it. I fixed it up pretty good though and swapped it off after a bit of time. I still see it now and then.

#3  Yeah, i've been the route with stopleak before and had good luck with it. We've got a good (and reasonable) radiatior shop nearby, if it comes to that.

When I 1st drove the Dakota, I wasn't too enthused about it and considered seeing if my Dad would trade it in for a later model, with more comfortable seats (for one thing). But, I have driven it a bit more and, after getting a "go ahead" (from my Dad) to do some work on it and replace that seat (if I can get a suitable replacement
for a fairly decent price, I am learnig to like the old thing. :) Now, don't get the idea that the age of the truck has anything to do with my feeling of the truck because it's not that. Sure be glad when I can get the Tires & front end alignment taken care of, to make it more pleasant to drive. ;)
