What's the going rate for frame powder coating?
« on: December 16, 2007, 12:55:35 PM »
I am curious as to what people have had to pay to have a frame and swing arm sand blasted and powder coated. Of course the prices will be different from city to city etc. I am just trying to get a ballpark idea.

Thanks!

Well, here in Toronto I paid $225 for the following in gloss black:

Frame
Stock swingarm
Radian swingarm
Stock brake stay
Radian brake stay
8 engine mounting brackets
Rear brake rod
Side stand

They did all the masking and hole plugging.  This included all the prep work (blasting it etc.) and they wrapped it up nicely at the end.

I had mine done at an industrial coater.  Prices would likely be higher and perhaps quality to match at a specialty shop, but the finish on mine seems top notch.

The dust in the last pic is from me sanding out the one hole they didn't plug, for the swingarm bolt.  I used a small drum sander on my dremel and was very careful.  Frankly I think masking it would have resulted in not as nice a transition into the hole so I was happy they didn't do that.  Re-tapping holes might result in a better job than the silicone plugs they use to prevent powder from getting in.

got my frame, swingarm, engine mount brackets, battery box, and trees done for 300. that was blast and coat. its not bad. after having my first encounter with powdercoating, i coulda just painted it with some quality enamel and been just as happy with the result.

just a tip. watchout on coating aluminum. when they go to bake it, heating the aluminum will anneal it. so if you have a part that requires bolting to your aluminum piece, you may cross thread it. so far i've had problems with my upper tree whenever i went to bolt accessories to it.

I got a quote from a place here on the eastern shore of MD of about $285 for frame and swingarm. Little pieces added about 10-15 dollars a piece to the total. I'd love to find something closer to Salisbury, MD so I don't have to drive so far (about 3-4 hours) to get the work done.

I did a frame only for about 100.00.  I did all of the blasting work, and they coated and baked it for 60.00.  Took a while to blast, but well worth the time.  Going to do it again with this frame once my welding and mods are done.

the place i use charges me $200 for the frame, swingarm, and all related bits. i just did two frames chrome color (which requires clear), and they knocked $100 off for the two together, but usual price for two stage powders is 1 1/2 anyway, so they were still $200 each.

EDIT: 350-400F should be too cool to anneal. if they are baking long or hot enough to anneal aluminum, they're probably doing something wrong.

I have been paying $170.00 for gloss black for a CB450, a CB750 and a CL350. That price includes whatever extra pieces like the swingarm, battery box, engine mounts, triple trees, etc.

Seems like some of those prices are very reasonable.  Any of you care to dislose the city/shop where your blasting and powdercoating was done?  Also, is there is noticeable difference in the quality of the powdercoat finish depending on what blasting method is used?  I tend to think sandblasting would result in a slightly rougher finish than soda/plastic/glass bead etc.

Seaweb, I bet you could drive up here get a frame done, party a bit and still have some of your 500.00 left
 Except maybe ferry price.

The tool and die shop that was in my building has their own powder facility now. I think they were under 250.. maybe less.

There is at least 3 others here, not bad for a town of about 110 K..

I pay 200 bucks or so for a frame/swingarm & all the little bits.  Good price for  a nice durable finish.

Just checked out a local shop a few weeks back. Large modern operation. Looked like they do good work. All the prep work included. He told me to be sure I bring all the pieces at the same time. When I hesitantly asked how much (expecting $500) he said "$130". After I about sh1t on myself I said "that sounds reasonable" before he changed his mind.

Techy.. they been talking to each other..and are hosing the public   :o

After the prep the painting is easier than other painting.. basically the gun throws it in the air and electrostatic charge attracts it to the frame IN EVERY NOOK AND CRANNY WITHOUT AIMING THE GUN THERE.. the really big advantage to painting that way.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this to you, but it helps alot if you clean the threads after powdercoat.  Run a tap through the threads & clean out the coating.  Likely some made it in there, or along the sides.  I wouldnt think that the powder oven would be hot enough to distort / anneal the aluminum.  I usually also take a razor near any threads, again just enough to clean things out.  That powder gets hard & if not cleaned out can make a real chore of installing bits.
