Author Topic: CB 750 oil filter sources...any place cheaper than the honda shop? (Read 4583 times)

Is there an online source that is cheaper than the Honda shops? I don't mean to seem cheap (actually I am!), but I want to save wherever I can.

The local Honda dealer quotes me $8.64. Is that as cheap as they get? I don't mind buying in bulk if it saves some $; I''ll be keeping this bike I am sure!

Check with other bike shops. Generic oil filters are made that fit 750s. The same oil filter also fits some Kaws. They also are available online, but after paying for shipping you don't save much.

Auto stores (Autozone, Pepboys etc etc) sell filters (Fram etc with O-rings as well) to fit our CB750s for $3 -$4. Ive used these for years with no problem. There are numerous threads on this in the archives regarding quality, longetivity, filtering ability etc etc....I use and replace every 1500- 2000 miles. Still running after 25,000 miles (K2) and 40,000 miles (K4).

You will have to pay shipping, but if you are getting a few other things (and who doesn't need a few other things) sites like www.partsnmore.com and www.siriusconinc.com have them for around $5. However, if you can get them at an autoparts store for less I don't know why you wouldn't. One of the guys at my local autoparts store sold me on WIX filters a few years ago. They cost a bit more and have a few features that may or may not make a difference.

Wix yes, Fram no. Emgo maybe, but only because it's lying around handy.

Side by side, the Wix filters(Poland) appear to be made of better materials than the Emgo(Thailand) or Fram(China)... thicker metal parts and rubber seals... corrugated center sleeve vs. plain... etc.

Fram used to make good parts but quality has suffered since becoming a walmart house brand.

My 2 cents.

I found the Wix at O'Reilly's earlier today as well as the Shell oil recommended.

I've used the Parts-N-More filters, and they're fine, but they don't supply the o-rings with them and you're forced to re-use the rings from before. Hasn't been an issue yet, but just so you know. So, I've made it a practice to buy those filters, and then buy one from Honda every once in a while so I have "new" o-rings to use.

Ditto, got the PnM for 8 bucks Emgo with no gaskets.

Next one I got at Walmart for 4 bucks, Fram with both gaskets. they look identical to the naked eye except for some color variations.

Rhino do you think the Fram o-rings are as good as OEM (and even the same size?!). I ask as last time I changed my oil I wasnt happy with the Fram o-rings and thought this caused my oil leak from the filter housing. I couldnt be 100% sure though. Any thoughts on o-rings?

Sorry, my only reference is the o-rings that came with my rust bucket which I doubt are OEM.

I've been using Hiflofiltro filters for a while now. They did well in one of those filter tests a few years ago. DK has them for $4-$5...

The o-ring in question (I'm assuming) is the one that seals the filter housing to the crankcase. This o-ring cannot be "built in" to the filter as it has nothing to do with the filter itself.

I have used nothing but the fram filters on my bike. I have never had a leak and my oil if always flowing and clean. If you get a leak with the o-rings from one of those, I can only say that I think install got messed up. Coat them with some oil and install. As for the filter itself, I doubt wix is any better than the fram cartridge filter. The oil bypass that everyone is so concerned about is the regular honda one.

I was talking about the large o-ring that goes around the filter housing (not the small one for the bolt). I guess I must have installed it with a pinch or something. Was just curious about others experience. I have used Fram for many years but usually dont replace the o-rings

I've used the emgo filters, and I noticed a couple of things that made me not use them anymore. First, I wound up with leaky filter housings, because the big o-ring was thinner than the oe Honda, and second there were alot fewer holes on the inside of the filter than any filter I had seen, which can't be good for oil flow. For now, I'm still using honda filters....

Thats it! The thinner o-rings! I had one fat o-ring and one thin o-ring and couldnt recall which one was from where...this may explain it. Ok Im going to buy some Honda ones next time just to be sure

Strange I use the fram rings and there is never an issue. I use the stock housing for the 78K and the stick bolt and all. Very strange to say the least.
