How many miles do u have on your bike?
« on: July 28, 2005, 06:26:08 AM »
Whats up all, my question is how many miles can I get out of my CB750?  Shes got about 33K on her now.  Is 100K without doing a lowerend rebuild resonable?  Lets see what the highest milage SOHC is out there.  Give the year, model, milage and also include if u have rebuilt anything.  I'll start...

78 750F  33,000 when I got it, so not sure about what was done before.

100k - yes entirely possable, but it all depends on how caring all the PO's have been. A bike thats done a few thousand miles per year stands a much better chance than one that's been sat since the mid 70's and still only shows 3k on the clock.
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

68K on my 750.  52K on my 350f.  No idea on my dream or benly.
No head leaks on the 750 (knock on the head...) yet.  Not even broken in yet..:)
Need to rebuid swing arm, headstock, and do the top end on the 350f, but, she's still
a good gal.

the dream and benly are antiques, so,they get used enuf to keep the rust off the cylinders
and cams, and keep the seals wet.

My rebel?  800 miles.  It's for sale, if anyone is interested.

I have 57000 miles on my 71K1. I put it away for 15 yrs from 1987 to 2002. I think it had 51000 when I got it going in 02. I kicked it over every once in a while but I only started it once or twice during that 15 year park.
I split the cases one winter for a look/see and replaced the primary chains, not because they were bad, I guess I felt it was a maintenance item (1974-22000mi) . I checked the main and rod bearings with plastigauge at that time and they were like new. I pulled the head another time and replaced the cam chain also as a maintenance item (1975-29000mi). Thats the only times the engine was out, and it really didn't have to come out.
I have always changed the oil at 2000 mile intervals and use 20w-50. First Kendall GT-1, recently Castrol GTX. I have 3qts of Valvoline Motorcycle oil waiting for the next change.
The head gasket seeps a little bit and I'm shopping for a clutch and springs. The clutch just gives up on a hard 3-4 shift, or if I hit a bump while accelerating hard, but not a problem unless it's abused.
This bike runs like a top and meets my needs as a 1500-2000 mile per season rider. I'm not really interested in working on it a lot. If I want to start travelling again, i'll probably be looking for an ST or FJR. But all in all, pretty darn good for a 34 year old cycle.

Just curious, what are the typical temps where you live/ride?

Hi Bob, I live in Livonia, MI, so I guess the temps here are just about like AA. Which has been blazin' hot until the last couple of days. I guess I feel like i'm getting a little more protection with the higher viscosity, but I am no expert on oil. I ride from April 15 to October 15 or thereabouts and yeah, the motor turns over pretty slowly on cooler mornings on a cold start, but after a few minutes-no problem. I'm pretty sure 20w-50 is within the suggested temperature range.

Thanks Kevin. Yea, it was those same blazing hot days (and humid as you know) that made me ask. Currently using GTX 10w40 and while out riding at 93 degrees wondered how close to water it might be coming  ;). I guess we are pretty lucky here abouts, on average we only get 10-14 days of 90 or better per year.

Not trouble but 1,015,680 K would be about 620,000 miles. Pretty darn impressive. Just thought there might be a keying error in there some place.

60k without a rebuild on a bike seems impressive thats for sure.  although, my truck with a smallblock has over 200k no rebuild.  Keep in mind my fingers are crossed everyday when i start it.

anyway, ive heard of 60k on these.  I think the limiting factor are the valves.   then maybe the cam.  Cylinders (whistles) if you change the oil/filter like like you should, im guessing you could get 160k.

anybody have any opinions on what is he weak link on these motors?

I have 13,100 miles on my 76 CB550.  All original miles.  I'm basically the second owner.  I got it off the second owner who never rode it and it was garaged for 12 years before I bought it 5 years ago.

My 1972 CB750K2 just turned over 42K miles and is still going very strong with no leaks or unusual noises.  It even has the original clutch, though I think I might change that at 50K, just to keep everything up to speed.  I adjust the valves and keep everything tight on the usual intervals, and always use 20W50 motorcycle oil.

I have ridden it all over North America, through Death Valley at 115 degrees, across the Grand Tetons in freezing rain at 10,000 ft., and it has never quit on me.  I live in Atlanta, Georgia now, commuting everyday to work through traffic with temps around 85 degrees, and still no trouble (knock on polished aluminium)!  Here's to 100K!

You guys should get riding more! 125000 miles on my Seeley framed 750F1... most of the engine is still original except for pistons, bores, shells and chains. Around 105000 miles on my 400F (460F to be precise), though very few original parts remain of that bike, it's been under continuous, er, redevelopment for years (when the speedo died at about 90000 it was a tad disappointing, I was looking forward to seeing 00000.0 come up).

63,000 miles on my CB750K4 with 35,000 miles in the last 4 years. The longest continuous trip was 16,000 miles over 2 months (Boston - San Fancisco - Mexico and back to Boston). Had a top-end rebuild after 55,000 miles.
However, hats off to Tim!!
Cheers

22,382 on my 77 750F2.  Took it down to the frame, cleaned and painted everything after I got it in Sept 03, but did not rebuild anything on the engine.  Runs and looks great.  Hope I can double the mileage. ;D
