front fender
« on: February 10, 2008, 08:30:36 AM »
I'm interested in pictures of cafe style front fender options that might work on my 500K project. I'm currently running a 650 plastic front fender but would like to switch to something smaller and with a thinner profile.

any pics would be appreciated. if there's a concern about pictures clogging up this site, just PM them to me.

Many thanks,

Hym

Hym

I really like the 78 GS750 front fender. Very nice smooth lines.
I'm currently making a fiberglass mold of it and will post a picture as soon as it's out.

I took the stock front fender and shortened it front and back with welded leading and trailing edges to retain the stock appearance of not being too thin.  I stayed with the stock steel fender to keep the steel cross-over piece which helps as a fork brace.  If you go plastic, you may want to consider this instead of using a fork brace.  Don't have a picture to post here, since my photos always come out postage stamp size   >:(

just had a look at mine, seems the PO drilled the mounting bracket rivets out, moved it forward re-riveted it and cut the back of the guard short, the front still has the wired edge look and the back has a neat cut
heres a pic

Yo,

I've seen on the dotheton.com forum a vf500f fender that looked great and has the bonus of a built in fork brace.

I tried doing a search for you on the forums there but came up with a blank.

Here's a ebay link:

http://motors.shop.ebay.com/items/vf500f-fender_W0QQ_nkwZvf500fQ20fender

Could be a great option for ya.

OK UnCrash, now you've perked my interest.

Is this the fender of which you speak or has someone else gone through this mod, because if so, I too would like to see it!

I see why I couldn't find the info on that front fender at dotheton.com.  It was you who posted it!  HA what a knucklehead I am sometimes.

This is the exact bike I was thinking about.  Is it yours or do you know more about it?

I love the looks of it and that built in fork brace is killer.

I did like Steve F aswell...I think thats where i got my inspiration after seeing his bike. I cut the two ends of the fender about 6inches long each and welded them back together. then drilled the fender and used the stock fender bracket.

Me too, the only problem is that the VF500 and 750F fenders are intended for a 16" wheel, not a 19" one like I have...

someone bought the VF500F front fender I was watching on ebay >:( I'll keep looking and pick one up when I can. bwaller, please send the specs on the fork brace you have pictured. I'll get started on those pieces until I can get a fender to mount them on.

Slight hijack, but does anyone know the law (in the uk) regarding mudguard length for an mot pass? The back wheel sticks out as well on most cafinated bikes.

Loving these shortened standard 'fenders' by the way.

A question for Brent and others using the VF500F fairing:

Does the fork brace that spans the fender mate correctly with the inside of each fork lower? I'm looking at a 2 fenders on ebay, one with the brace and one without; I don't want to pay the extra$$ for the fender with the brace if it will have to be modified or replaced to work with 550K forks anyway.

I hate to mention it again but you do have the longer fork legs right? Early legs are a no-go.

Hym, buy the fender with the brace, it fits as snug as a bug in a rug!

Follows the contour of the dust boot perfectly. Here's a pic with one boot up and one in place.

I wouldn't make the claim that this is as sturdy as a Telefix leg clamp, but it does indeed tighten up the forks, much moreso than the stock fender for sure.

Oh by the way, I ground the original rivots off that attach the fender to the brace/support to paint it. Those are stainless buttonhead screws that reattach.

The fender bolts to the clamps with 6mm bolts that use an 8mm head as the bolt is close to the boot.

By saying "early legs are a no go" ---how early ?? How do they interfere (is it fixable?)?

The legs have to be long enough so that when the fender bolts to the clamps it clears the tire. I wanted to maintain a dust boot, so turned the leg "round" in a lathe just below the boot to pinch the clamps.

I'm sorry I can't tell you when Honda switched to longer fork legs, the forks on this bike are 404's from a 77 CB550K model. They are 13+9/16" from the top of the axle to the top of the leg. On my 750K3 the legs are 12+3/16", not long enough.

I'm using an 18" rim which gives me lots of clearance, but tried a 19" wheel for hymodyne and it just cleared but probably should be spaced. For me the fender looks a tad small on 19" but it should work.

I wish I knew how to post these pictures smaller.

When I planned this bike build this is the recipe I came up with to use the fender I liked, I'm sure there are better minds that can make it work differently.

I did like Steve and just cut mine off front and back.  Left the stock bracing......

The above bike looks phenomenal!!! I will second the option of just trimming your stock fender. It can be done very simply and looks great. Here is one I did.

I got my  VF500F  fender today for the Tracy bike. I did not receive the fork clamps, just the fender with the alum. top. I think it will look great on this glass body bike ;D
Looks like I may have to dremel a bit of glass, but it would be nice to know where to get the pieces I'm missing ???

Think Honda still sells them?

Ah I think there may be some misunderstanding about those clamps seaweb11. They are pieces I fabbed to mount the fender/brace not actual Honda parts.

On the original Interceptor there were lugs actually cast into the fork legs that it bolted to.

I don't mind e-mailing you some half-assed blueprints on how I made these so you can duplicate them if you would like.
