Be careful with exhaust wrap!  As the wrap is porous, it tends to hold water... water = rust.  So if you've already got some rust working exhaust wrap may only accelerate the deterioration.  I've got the headers wrapped on my Buell, but they're stainless so no worries.

I guess, if you ever get caught out in the rain, you could dry wrapped headers out by letting the bike run for a spell before putting it up for the night?

Great job on the frame. I also heard that about wrapping the headers.. Where is the picture of the snazzy rear fender?

I had the exhaust ceramic coated beforehand

I haven't bought any new cables, but I'm afraid I may need new ones as my throttle is sticking. I simply rerouted the stock cables: from the throttle linkage they go from the right, then underneath the frame and around the triple tree on the left. And from there they loop underneath the headlight to the controls. (Or maybe that's why they're sticking.)

For clearcoat, I bought a can of Duplicolor spray-on clearcoat from Autozone for 3 bucks.

Thanks for the nice words guys! I bought a new set of coils from a Nighthawk 750 (with detachable plug wires) from eBay for 20 bucks, including shipping. Gonna look forward to testing it out over Thanksgiving break.

All I have left to do is install the coils, exhaust gaskets, the body panels my friend is working on for me, and get it running from there. Oh, and I may try my hand at reupholstering my seat with some brown leather and reshaping the lumpy-looking foam. Stay tuned.

bzr, I am trying to restore a 1975 cb550f also, and I live about 5 minutes from Syracuse. Is your bike home or at school? If you ever keep it around Syracuse I would love to check it out.

My bike's at home in MA. Though I wouldn't mind checking your bike out!

So this might be a shot in the dark, but it's still a shot.

I've been busy working and at school (graduating and all kind of occupied my time), and I've finally rolled out my bike to finish it before I go to London for grad school in mid-September. So far, I've installed a new exhaust adapter and muffler, and made a brace to attach it to the footpeg mount. Fixed the sticking throttle, too - turns out, I had glued the grip on with tacky glue, and over time it had turned into brown shards that practically fused the grip to the handlebars. Messy, but I got that working great without having to reroute my cables. But I installed my battery today, flicked the key to ON, and...nothing.

Well, not exactly nothing. The neutral and oil lights both illuminate, and the neutral light shuts off when I switch into gear, as it's supposed to. The battery reads approx. 12 volts, and it's been on a trickle charge for a week now. I have the coils disconnected, as I'm about to install the Nighthawk ones, including the ground there.

Last summer, the wiring was rebuilt, and all the headlights, tailights, turn signals, idiot lights, etc. worked perfectly - there was just a problem of the battery cutting out. This year, I have the exact opposite problem. A quick one-over of the harness indicates that nothing's been out of place or been gnawed by rodents. The problem is, I don't even know where to start diagnosing it. I'll have to take a look at it some other time when I'm not so tired and actually have time to think, but for now, with everything I described above, where should I start checking?

NEVER MIND, turns out I hadn't grounded the fat green wire coming from the coils. Screwed that onto the frame and the headlights, high beams, turn signals, brake light, and even the electric starter worked.

Problem is, they're all bright, but really weak. The turn signal blinks once every 2 seconds, and it is comical in its patheticness. As mentioned before, when the key is turned all the way to P, on the right, everything turns off. Oh, and the brake light doesn't work when both the front or rear brakes are applied - might be a switch thing, but I'm not sure.

What should I be replacing or upgrading?

Took the tank and sidecovers to get painted, and the rear fender to be bobbed by my friend with an angle grinder. Here's the new seat cover I ordered from an eBay store: they're very nice people and have a bunch of different colors/stencils to choose from. I got the wrong size cover first but they were nice enough to let me exchange it. $38, not that bad I suppose.

Test fitting on my rusty-ass seat pan:

Most likely just normal battery drain. I had to charge mine about two thousand times during the build process. They will be brighter and the battery will keep a charge as soon as you are above 4000 RPM's for a sustained period of time. Looks good.
