i've got a sweetheart 1980 650c the gearing in the trans has been tampered with by the po, he also added a big boar kit, an oil cooler, and i think the 4-2 exhaust that's on it now is aftermarket. i've restored most everything else original with the exception of a cb450sc fuel tank, and a after marked sissy bar/ luggage rack combo. next i'm gonna black out the engine& lower fork tubes and think about polishing my comstars. i'll get around to posting some pictures when i can

what is the difference between the standard model and the custom? mine was originally a custom, then the po converted it to a race bike. i've put most of the original stuff back on(eg headlight, signals, fenders ect.) but i'm curious as to what the difference is.

You have to be kidding right?
The '79 has the best lines IMO.

It's been a while since I looked at this thread, didn't realize it was this big.

I've added and lost a 650 lately.
Still have my '79cb650... bored out, '85 kawasaki ninja carbs, and dyna2000.
As well as a '82cb650sc that is getting a serious working over. 65mm bore, headjob, possibly cam, possibly another set of ninja carbs, dual front disks, single disk rear.
But I want it to look as if theres something missing to make it run.

Agreed, start a new thread and post as many pics as you can. Roller rockers would be really interesting in a 650 motor...

Add one more.  Just got a 79 CB650 in a trade this weekend.  It's a little rough, but runs.  I'll post some pics when I get a chance.  Moving is a PITA.  No internet at home yet.

Hi Rusty,

Did you trade the CB350F for this bike?   What prompted the trade?

Hi Rusty,

Hey Tim,
Nope, I still have the 350.  I traded a rifle for the 650.  Since I moved from Idaho I don't have a need for a .30-06 anymore.  Hunting in Ohio is shotgun or bow (which I already have) so I knew the rifle would just sit and collect dust for the next 20 years.  I also moved further from Columbus and I thought a 650 would do a little better than a 350 commuting down I-70.  Now I'm about halfway between Springfield and Columbus.  Looks like you're making a lot of progress on your 350.  Hopefully, you'll get some time in the saddle before it gets too cold.

That looks like an 80 model.
Definitely not.  The '80s have differently shaped tank and seat, though they do both use similar mech. slide carbs.  there's even a difference in the carb model.  To my knowledge, the '80 cb650 is the only one to use its particular model of carbs... (THAT I could be way wrong on, though)

i've got a honey of a 80 cb650c here. mostly stock so far with some cosmetic changes, nighthawk tank, matt-black everything paintable & gutted 4-2 exhaust. looking to upgrade my carbs soon and possibly do pod filters, new gauges, and maybe some one off exhaust pipes. i'm thinkin 4-4 with some oneoff tips.
1980 cb650c first bike i owned now the wife's ride.           1982 xv920j virago, bike i learned to ride on rescued it from a 13 year coma (sitting in the shed) now she runs beautifully and rides like a dream.

So what parts have you guys/gals found to be interchangable between the different years?
