i'm using car audio cables(just cause i've got lots lying around) most the heavy wires are either 6gauge or 4gauge braided copper with solid copper connections solidered, the battery cables are from 6 gauge copper doubled over. as for the other stuff my dad (almost retired government electricion) is doing the windings in my alternator for me. and i'm adding heat sinks to the housing. it's work in progress still, but beefing up the wires alone helped a bunch

Thanks ghost

thats what I was thinking too, lower the res. of the wiring harness
I have a bunch of partial rolls of THHN  stranded laying around was thinking about using it but it's a little stiff and probably overkill on the insulation
(rated at 600V)  will look in to the car audio cables,

would be nice to get some kind of  ventilation going in the rotor/stator
cover but would hate to have it open to the elements

when you get the heat sinks added would be interested in seeing it

Thanks again

Mike

Hello Lee nice looking Bike

*  *  *

bad rotor, Reg/Rec, 1 pickup coil, 1 ign coil, ign wires and I don't know about
the spark units yet, they aren't melted (good sign i hope)

Needs tires, sprockets, chain, fork seals, seat redone, gas tank leaks at the seam by the petcock, had gas sitting in it for about 2 yrs (man that stunk)

Yikes!  I missed all that on the first read through.  You are destined to become a Nighthawk electrical GURU!    ;D

+1 on ground, they can never be too good, check all your other connections as well, i chaced gremlins all summer long from those loose, dirty,  old connections

Check bulbs, PO's have bad habit of slapping in anything that is 12v and has paralel lugs. ;D
I'd swap your two front bulbs (cos it only takes a few minutes and a phillips screwdriver) with each other and see if the problem follows or fixes.....but that's cos I'm sooooo damn lazzzyyyy. ;D

I keep getting the feeling these bikes just didn't get a lot of love from Honda... or there just wasn't enough R&D put into the electrical portion... I ended up taking apart and cleaning my starter, cleaning the brushes and alternator rotor, replacing the spark unit and advancer...

I'll agree.
I have owned a '79cb750(DOHC) and a LOT of parts common to that bike are on our 650's as well.
The rotor has the same OD, taper, and mounting bolt.
However the CB750's rotor I had measures lower ohms than the cb650 ones I have measured.

Was going to try it as a "upgrade" to the stocker rotor. But sold it.. $$ talks... :)

If I remember right the windings in the housing of the cover were the same OD, length...
It would have fit into a cb650 housing, but the wiring lengths were different, sold it as well I believe.

I have a set of CDI units from one still.
Exact same part # on it as the 650's.
I think I had to remove and replace the plug end for the 750's reg/rec though. But it is the one runnin' on my '79cb650 right now.

I must have missed the ford reg/rec conversion over there, have to go look for it!
Love cheap and readily available parts!

just had the meeter on my electrical system this afternoon, and wow. i'm getting 13.4 v at 1.2k idle and it jumps to 14.8v befor 2k. dad wouldn't tell me specifically what he did to my alternator, but it's WAY BETTER.

the r/r is from a ford truck so i'm not to worried about that, i'm a little concerned about the stock ignightors though. i'll be keeping an eye on them

Here's my 1979 CB650 (my first bike). I just picked this up January 16th, 2009. It has 38,300 km and will need a new seat cover, a good polishing, tires, battery and maybe some minor adjusts. This photo was taken by the original owner this past summer and l'll post my pics when I get her cleaned up and more presentable.

Does anyone know what would be good replacement tires for this bike and a place to find a replacement seat cover?

Bridgestone Spitfires tend to be good tires for these bikes... dual compound so they wear well in the center but are a little stickier on the sides for better cornering.  People seem to like them for wet weather riding, too.

Bridgestone Spitfires

I use them on Sophie. 20,000+km on the rear with still lots left in it. The front was on the bike when I got it, and shows age cracking (which merits a replacement, of course), but I've put 22,000km+ under it with minimal tread wear.

Thanks guys for the recommendation on the tires and dual compound sounds like the way to go. As far as a seat cover goes, I found a place on the web, that has replacement seat covers and reasonably priced if you do it yourself.  http://www.sargentcycle.com/readyfit.htm

The guy I bought the bike from purchased it new and had all the toys put on the day it left the dealership. I'm not sure if I like the Windjammer on the front; however, the original owner said you don't get wet riding in the rain, unless you stop. So I might try riding with the fairing on. Personally, I really like the backrest, since it rolls back if you got a passenger. I got the original headlight and indicator hardware if I decide to but it back to stock.

Soos, I'll post a front shot some time this week.

If that's the stock chrome seat trim strip, hang on to it when you re-cover your seat.  I'm trying to resurrect my bike to full stock and was missing that chrome strip. the upholsterer that re-did my seat was great, but he pitched the original (and admitedly shot) strip.  I was incredibly lucky to find another one just the other day... but it might be hard to find another one!

Thanks for the advice, Kit. I noticed there's not a lot of places to find a replacement seat or the chrome strip for the CB650. My chrome strip appears to be in really good shape, except for the black goo from the black duct tape on one side, which will come off easy. I'll definately make sure I take it off, carefully.  Cheers!

Hey, Dan Harris here, my 650 is an '81 custom in process of even more custom.
It ran but was very unsafe when I got it.
I'm new here and need to figure out pic posting... but there's a build thread with pics on TCU
http://www.thechopperunderground.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=30994&st=0

Goosenecked frame (top half), monoshosck swingarm (modified from stock) not sure of tankage yet and if I get ambitious I'll put EFI on it.
I also have a springer for the front and will have drum front and back, rear is stock Cb50 and front is a dual arm  from the parts shed.

Damn Lockyrider, that beast must weigh as much as my PZ? Sharp bike once you have replaced the worn bits, I'm wondering how much cooling the engine gets under all that fibreglass or maybe because it chanells it then cooling is improved?

Here's my 80 CB650 that I layed down yesterday!!! Just a little road rash on the arm, rolled it off pretty good. I was only going 10MPH and hit some gravel on a turn. Was watching all day for it!!! Could have been worse. Beautiful days in WNY watch out for the gravel ;) Anyone have an extra turning signal ;D I'm also looking for a seat..

I do. PM me if you still need one.

Hey all. Here's my 82 CB650 Nighhawk SC or "Luxury Custom" if you happened to live in Tokyo. The last SOHC4 made by Honda. 8k miles, nice shape but has a few issues: a nasty tank (old kreme), oil leak, and some pretty grating bad vibes at 5000k or so. Other than that she pulls nicely and has started up every day so far even in 12 degree NYC weather. No charging issues!

Starts at 12 degrees?  Wow!  My 82 CB650SC has a hard time at 32 degrees!  (But starts up, nonetheless)

Looks good.
