To the best of my knowledge, most everything from '80 thru '82 is interchangeable until you get to the carbs and engine.  The isolators that work with the '81-'82 carbs are too big to work with the '80 and '79 carbs.  I've heard tell the '79 frame is 'completely different' but I don't know exactly 'how' except that the seat and tank look different.  The '80s got regular sealed beam headlights, but '81-'82 had halogen.  I think also the '81-'82 has a different, two-screw master cylinder, possibly larger for the '81 and '82 custom's dual disks.    Oh, check your igniters under your seat, next to the battery.  Almost every 650 I've seen, the black plastic covering on the back is melted to death.  I replaced mine, but the black plastic dripped down beneath my battery cover etc.  :o

So what parts have you guys/gals found to be interchangable between the different years?

Well...
Differences:(CV(most '80 and all '81 and '82's) bikes Vs. Mechanical carb bikes('79 and some '80 cb650's)

The '79 kickstand has the spring on the inside of the frame, '80-'82 on the outside

Sidecovers, obvious difference visually, mount points do not match up.

Seats do not swap

Tanks do not swap

Tripple trees are different spacing, but forks are same diameter.

rear rim swap is straightforward.

Swingarm swap is not, soemewhat involved with this one.

CDI units are same all years.(can use DOHC750/900/1100 units as well)

engines swap all years

heads swap all years

turn signals swap '80-'82, '79's are unique among the cb650's

exhausts are not a straightforward swap.
a '79 4-2 exhaust fits the '80-'82 frame ok. the 4-4 fits the '79, but interferes with the

kickstand spring post on the frame.

headlight mounts are different.

neck bearings are the same

Tripple trees swap easily.

coils are swappable

air cleaners are not swappable.

Inner plastic fender off a '80-'82 frame will fit a '79 frame if using pods, and you want to eliminate the airbox(not a perfect fit, but it works)

And thats just , besides the obvious frame differences.

And that list is just off the top of me head for 650 to 650 swaps i've tried....
Not to mention the non cb650 parts onto a cb650 i have failed at or succeeded at.

l8r

Don't forget, thats only for the US version.
As for non US "Z" models, I have no idea. Have YET to get one.

Thanks for the info Kitsune and Soos!

I'm in the gathering parts stage to fix up my 650.  Will be working on it this winter and hope to have it done by spring.

Oh, check your igniters under your seat, next to the battery.  Almost every 650 I've seen, the black plastic covering on the back is melted to death.  I replaced mine, but the black plastic dripped down beneath my battery cover etc.  :o

The killer of those CDI units tends to be a failing charging system, or leaving the ignition on with the motor not running.

And yes the frames are REALLY different.

The '80-'82 are a lower seating setup, the '79 sits higher...
Swingarms on the 2 different feames are different as well.
Do a search I have swapped a '81(?'80?) swingarm on my '79 frame.
The pivot tube is smaller on the '79 swingarm, so custom bushings are needed.

If you ever get a chance to park your next to a '79 and compare(or you '79 owners park next to a '80-'82) and note the differences.

And thats only within the US.
Then there is the "Z" model the rest of the world got, thats another beast unto itself...

Thanks!

. I wish the seat were as pretty as it looks in that pic. It has a couple of splits I taped up. I'm hoping it can be fixed as I like the stock look of the seat. If not I'll have to find a stock looking cover.

It wasn't that pretty when I got it. It had a big ugly fairing on the front. That was first to go. It also had alot of clean up and the charging system was messed up. I got all that done and put plugs, front turn signals, and a flasher relay and its doing pretty good now. Unfortunatly I missed alot of the riding season this year with the charging system problems. But we had a nice warm stretch this week so I took it out at lunch and ran it around some. I'm liking it more and more, the more I ride it.

I also took the tank emblems off and taped one and repainted the black. Took alot of taping and trimming to get it masked off but it turmed out pretty good. So now I need to get the other done. This was since these pics. Other than that I added some reflective tape so the crazy people around here don't run me over. Nothing to dramatic and nothing that can't be removed with a hair dryer.

Oh yeah and it has less than 12k miles on it.  ;D

Depending on where you're from, check out Rick's Upholstery in Oregon.  Guy does a good job and for a smaller sum than you'd think.  My seat was completely redone (pics in '1980 resto'... blah blah ...'total newbie' thread) for $80

I'm not sure where the right place would be... you said you're a first time bike owner- is that your only bike?

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY !

Just got my first, 82 CB650SC  unless my 83 XR counts its a SOHC/4v

I think this might get expensive. electrics are bad , except maybe the spark units, any way to test them ?

1982 CB650SC
17,0050 miles
Sugar Land, TX

I bought my Nighthawk in August with 15,142 miles.  It is my daily commuter and I would have put more miles on it, but it had a nagging electrical problem.

The fix was to replace the rotor in the alternator with a rebuilt unit from www.customrewind.com.  Of course, I didn't figure this out until I replaced the voltage regulator with a new unit from Tony at www.oregonmotorcycleparts.com (who gave great service and kept working with me as I worked out the electrical gremlins). Note to self:  next time, listen to the expert before throwing money at the problem.   ;)

God bless,

Lee
My Nighthawk is put together with wire and zip ties, burns oil, and handles like a pig.  I love it!

Mike, when you say "electrics are bad," what exactly do you mean?  What are the symptoms.

Hello Lee nice looking Bike

well I knew it was not charging when i got it  but also, after a new battery I could not get it to fire, that's what brought me to this forum
Wish I would have found it first

after researching here (a lot of great info) I pulled all the electrical comps. out and tested them.

bad rotor, Reg/Rec, 1 pickup coil, 1 ign coil, ign wires and I don't know about
the spark units yet, they aren't melted (good sign i hope)

Needs tires, sprockets, chain, fork seals, seat redone, gas tank leaks at the seam by the petcock, had gas sitting in it for about 2 yrs (man that stunk)

got a set of pickups coming from ebay hope they ohm out ok so i can see if this thing will even start

went through the carbs and cleaned them up, got a coil from a friend just to test,  if the motor is in good shape will try and get it road worthy
if not may just part it out,  hope the motor is in good shape would like to keep this bike
haven't a had street bike since a bought the XR in 84, have been riding that ever since, needed something a little more comfortable
for long distances

I keep getting the feeling these bikes just didn't get a lot of love from Honda... or there just wasn't enough R&D put into the electrical portion... I ended up taking apart and cleaning my starter, cleaning the brushes and alternator rotor, replacing the spark unit and advancer...

that seams to be the most common problem with our 650's or so i've read. i'm currently giving mine lots of love, in the form of all new oversized wiring for all the major electrical components, new regulator/rectifier (ford truck conversion found over on the 650 forum) along with some other stuff i'm not ready to discuss yet.

I'm almost afraid to chime in here, for fear that I'll hex myself for the next riding season.......... I've had absolutely no electrical issues with Sophie; and she's got the same battery in her that was there when I got her.

The only electrical problem I've had is when I switched (pardon the pun) to old school switchgear from a '68 CB175. The internals of the turnsignal switch self destructed midway through last season, so I ended up using hand signals. It's on this list for 'things to do' this winter.

Hey ghost
You say upgraded wiring?
do you know the size and type of wire used in these bikes

I'm familiar with AC circuit wiring ( retired electrician ) but not with automotive wiring, was think about doing this while the bike is apart

any info would be appreciated Thanks

Oh and I really want to ask about the other STUFF ! but I won't YET   ::)
