Anyone Ever Seen or Heard Of Pipes Like This?
« on: May 04, 2008, 07:56:30 PM »

Look pretty wicked to me. Seems like they should work pretty good because of the way they are built. Sure would be a pain for the bike jack type lifts though. Pretty good amount of info in ebay listing that I've put the link in for. Didn't post this in ebay items for sale, because I was mainly interested in the type of pipes and the info about them.

Bill, I'm still skeptical - re-jetting is normally required with good pipes because of better breathing - better breathing means the engine is pumping more air, more air and fuel at the correct ratios means more power. How then can this pipe make more power if the stock jets are sufficient to provide the mix?

I love the look - I'd like to have it under my bike moreso than the Kerker sticking out the side. But, I will want to see these turning up at the dragstrip - people running the 1/4 mile need every single horsepower they can get. Today, they still use the old tried and true 4/1 header/collector/megaphone system used 30 years ago. Until I hear someone of experience or run one for myself, I won't believe their claims. Scavaging exhaust is a science - pull it out of the cylinder with velocity - the cylinder has more room for a fresh charge. Spent fuel won't ignite a 2nd time.

Gordon, to be honest about it, I didn't really read much of their info, I just looked at the design and have seen similar design used on drag cars. Like you, I don't see how it IS possible to not have to rejet the carbs. You know as well as I do that a "properly tuned exhaust system makes a considerable different in performance, but you also have to make other changes (like rejetting the carbs. It's all about getting the air/fuel mixture, compressing it, igniting it and getting it out in a timely manner. Ya can't do just one of those things and get by. You said it much better than I did though. (as you can tell) Just wanted you to know that I'm wishing I'd have read their info and comented on that also.
Always a pleasure to read your posts because they are filled with fact and well put. ;)
                                  Take care Gordon, Bill ;)

maybe there is an extensive amount of "baffle" inside the pipe that actually makes it restrictive more so as to the stock exhaust. or it just pushes the stock jets to the limit where you can't really notice it

I went back and read his info (like I should have done in the first place) and read that baffles are included in the deal. He goes on to say that he uses some kind of (I think he called them) diversion rings (or something like that), which tones down the sound a bit, without hurting the performance. Still have to see it to believe it. I posted this mainly because of the different design.

Bill, I would agree 100% - I love the look of the pipes and would like a set on my little 836, but I am not buying one until several folks I trust have gone ahead of me :)

Bill, haven't you been on the tech board at all? People have been bashing these things for a while now.  :D

I don't know. I'm not sold on them.

I have a set of black ones for my Cafe build I am doing.  Actually getting ready to mount them.  I have heard them and they sound different than the other exhausts for our bikes, cool IMHO.  Comes in pieces with quite a bit of assembly, cheap paint.  I am probably going to cut mine and make sure they hug the bottom of my frame.  Here is a pic of another members bike with them mounted....  Pic is on my home computer, will post later....

Tech Board, what Tech Board, I don't see no Tech Board. ::) Musta been one of those "Senior Moments" ;) Yeah..... that's what it was. :D I DO like a decent 4 into 1 but I like a short reverse cone megaphone on it. I would like to see how these work out though. I definitely like the idea of them being tucked up close too.

Where is Geeto67 on this?
Saw a post of his on another forum.

There is a lot of info about these pipes around the internet. Most if it is bad. Let's begin....

First off they don't tell you this but assembly is extra. You get the pipe as a bunch of prebent sections that you weld yourself. If they build if for you the chrome they will coat it in is worse than MAC (and that is saying something). which brings me to point number 2 - the #$%*ing thing is hella expensive. Also, if you notice there is no rear mount - the whole thing is held up by the exhaust collars and it is not light. b/c of the no rear mount it vibrates like crazy and can crack the head pipes, so for it to really be useable you need to fab something. Which means you may also loose your centerstand, depending on the bike. It really isn't for a stock bike, you need to have a pretty modded motor for you to really take advantage of the principles talked about on the site. Grpund clearance is also an issue unless you found a way to bend the pipe up when you got around to making the rear mount. Oh yeah, and once you bought the pipe - there really is not customer service. This pipe has been around since the 1970s, so somebody is buying these, but who I just don't know.

The only one I ever saw in person was on a suzuki gs750. Let me say this now the pipe is not quiet when you are twisting the wick. It is kinda quiet and lopey at idle but every custom pipe is. However this GS750 was a guy I knew's street strip bracket race drag bike and it used to rape anything up to 1000ccs made before 1990. The sound is also unlike any other pipe I have ever heard at full song. IT is a really good sound too. In the looks department it defiantly hogs style points (once you get all the issues sorted out).

here is some reading for your ass:

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=16322.0

http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=89083&highlight=x-pipe

http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=92420&highlight=x-pipe

Personally I would build my own and avoid the x-pipe like the plague.

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger for my 836 Tracy.
A Mac is what now.........$300.00.

More reading a head tonight.

Edit: Found this positive post on another site ;D

FUNNY,with all the BRAINS on this site I would think some of you would have an open mind.I am new to bikes but I have no trouble wrenching on them and am always open to knowledge.I have this pipe on my bike now and it OUT performs the V&H 4to1 that was on it before.I think it's limits would be a 1300cc+ engine for the strip, then a bigger tube head pipe would be in order.I am not an engineer or educated for that matter but I do understand mechanics.I have worked on a lot of types of machines including jet engines and propellers.Rip away at me I don't really care it seems a lot of what goes on here is for YOUR entertainment!I would expect a little more out of Keith than popping him ONE,thing is Keith you shouldn't under estimate anyone, just because the guy is a DR. doesn't mean he couldn't kick YOUR a$$.That's just a BULLY comment,to tell you the truth I LOVE bullies, thing is they never did learn how to fight. They throw punches from yesterday, very easy to to DUCK!It's been fun.Don

When I posted this, I had no idea that those pipes had been around for so long. Didn't look like anything I'd be able to swing anyhow. ::) It's a shame that something that looks and sounds good can't go any further than that. :-\  Makes me wonder how they stay in business.

Thanks to ALL for the input on this. ;)
