My fave:

6 BEAN HUNTER’S STEW

1 Tube Bob Evans Original Recipe Sausage
1 Pound Bacon

1 Can Kidney Beans
1 Can Wax Beans
1 Can Butter Beans
1 Can Lima Beans
1 Can Green Beans
1 Can Pork and Beans

1 Can Tomato Soup
1 Can Tomato Paste

1 ½ Cups Brown Sugar
1 TBSP Dry Mustard
1 TBSP Worcestershire Sauce
¼ Cup Dried Onions

Drain all the cans of beans, except the pork and beans. Mix all the beans together. Mix together the soup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, dried onions, brown sugar and mustard. Slice bacon into small pieces and pan fry. Drain off the grease. Chop the sausage and pan fry as well, again draining off the grease afterwards. Mix all ingredients together in a large crock-pot and allow to simmer. (The longer it simmers, the better it'll be!)

Chicks dig guys that can cook.

My recipe involves a lumber yard, so it's manly.

Take a fillet of salmon (I lived in Alaska, and there's nothing like wild caught), if you want to impress, spring for the fresh Coho.

Marinate 30-60 minutes in: Olive oil,  Juice of 1 lemon, grated lemon peel, fresh thyme, salt and pepper.

Get a piece of cedar fence plank that's big enough to fit your fillet (see, I told you there'd be lumber).

Put the fish on the plank and put the whole thing on a medium hot fire on the grill along with corn still in the husk.
The plank should be smoking and charred by the time you're done.

Cook till it's barely opaque and for gods sake, don't ruin that good fish by overcooking.

Serve and let the compliments roll in.

Slow cooker= Bachelor's best friend

Easiest thing in the world:

Buy a 3-4lb pork shoulder
place in the slow cooker w/ a tbsp of water
cook on high for 12 hours
drain, then pull apart w/ 2 forks
add a bottle of your favorite bbq sauce, combine, throw on some hamburger buns and you have a damn good bbq pork sandwich

Oh yeah!  The slow cooker is an awesome peice of machinery!  I've dumped all my chili ingrediants in one before, went to work, came home, and had dinner!

Also, throw into the slow cooker 1 lb. boneless chicken breasts, a little honey, 1 whole lemon cut into 1/4" slices, lots of garlic, and a little ginger, some oregano, etc...  Comes out great!

I used to know a recipe involving pork loin, a can of coke, and some other things in the slow cooker that was amazing!

Scunny, a variation on your cooking method which I've done a few times is to wrap the prepared Trout/fish of your choice in newspaper and tie with string. Then dunk it in a bucket of water for ten minutes. Cook it gently over an open fire on a grate or whatever. Turn it when the newspaper starts to dry out and burn. After 20 minutes or so take it off - it will probably let you know when it's done! Inside you will have a beautifully steamed fish. Takes a bit of practice but the fish tastes fantastic.
I recommend the 'Times' or 'Daily Telegraph' newspapers - cheaper papers don't work as well somehow. ;D

ChrisR thanks for the heads up on the newspaper, I will have to try that, generally the only paper we have is the toilet roll type, that's where the spade comes in, to fashion your very own room with a view so to speak. As to the type of newspaper, we only have the press, I suppose the political section could come in handy as a rather crude arse wipe tho

I've got a book around here somewhere- written by steam engine locomotive drivers from the UK around the 1950's (tail end of steam power locomotives), and the book is about operation and maintenance of steam engines.  In the book, in the section that explains how to operate the locomotives, they talk about life as an engineer- the different roles workers in the engine have, what they wear, etc.  They go over how to cook a meal on their coal shovel over the hot coals in the engine!  It sounded pretty hardy- basically cooking sausage and bacon on the (cleaned) shovel, then in the leftover grease cooking eggs.

It sounded pretty hard core- like it would be a hefty fat meal, but I bet it tasted good- especially when rainy and cold.

Jake- that sounds good. Thanks.

What's "linguisa"?  Can I get it in a store in the South, or do I need to fly to
                                             Chicago for a good deli?

I think it was a spelling error on a spanish/phillipino sausage called: longanisa sausage.  Should be available almost everywhere.  If you can't find it, try mexican chorizo.

Pasta Matriciana

- 6 Slices of bacon, cut up into 1" pieces
- 1/2 cup chopped oinions
- Sliced Garlic (as much as you want)
- 1 cup tomatoe sauce
- 1 cup chicken stock
- 5 tablespoons fresh parmesan
- Basil (preferably fresh)
- 1/2 cup red wine

Fry bacon in a good size fry pan or wok, when bacon is nearly done add onions and garlic (do NOT drain the bacon fat). When the onion is soft, add red wine and let it boil down by half. Add tomatoe sauce, chicken stock and basil. Let this simmer while you boil 4 cups of pasta shells. When the shell are nearly done drain and add to the sauce, let simmer for 3 minutes. Remove from heat add the parmesan stir and devour. Good eating let me tell ya.

Simple Fried Chicken

Eggs
Saltine Crackers
Flour
Salt/Pepper

Beat eggs to thoroughly mix white and yolks
Place chicken pieces in the eggs so they are completely covered
Crush the crackers in a ziplock bag and add flour
Pull each piece of chicken out of the eggs 1 at a time and place it in the ziplock bag with the crackers/flour
Shake well, get the chicken completely covered with cracker crumbs
Fry until done

The best Chicken Gravy ever:
When finished frying the chicken, drain grease out of fryer leaving all crumbs in the pan
Dump in the crackers you used to cover the chicken
Add milk and stirr

If the gravy gets too thick, add milk. If it's too runny, add more flower/crackers.

Best if served with real mashed potatoes and sweet corn, and a big glass of milk.

I read a similar article in an old book about how to cook food on a car engine on a long trip. Imagine pulling over every 10 minutes to turn the potatoes on the exhaust manifold...

i will give away exactly one chilli secret.  there are many more, but this one i'll give.

in the skillet that you will use to brown the meat, pour about 2/3 of a bottle of guinness.  add chopped onions as well as cayan and habanero powder.  i typically also dice a couple of small habaneros to throw in.  stir, simmer, and drink the rest of the bottle, till about half the liquid is evaporated, then brown the meat in the rest.  really sinks the heat into the meat so you don't notice it at first, but 2 or 3 bites later it begins to take hold.  after a bowl, you may need an epinephrine shot.

had i given a bbq secret, i'd have to kill you all.

that's what the bbq is for......4 grills including a 350 gallon oil drum converted to a smoker in my back yard.
holds about 100lbs of charcoal and wood, and enough room for 5 slabs of ribs, a roast and the quicky stuff too.

Pasta carbonera - my wife went to college in Norway at an international school.  She tells me that her Italian roommates made a quick carbonera as follows:

Boil 1lb. of angel hair pasta until just done (al dente).
At the same time, fry 4-5 slices of bacon until done.  Crumble the bacon and set aside.
Beat two eggs.  Add a good handful of shredded parm cheese directly to the beaten eggs.
Drain the pasta and put in back into the pot, off the heat.
While the pasta is still hot, dump in the eggs/parm and bacon.
grind in lots of black pepper (the 'carbonera') - and I like to add some red pepper flakes.
Stir all together.  The heat from the pasta cooks the egg and it all becomes gooey.

Serve with warm Italian bread, and I'll promise that it will become a favorite comfort food.  Plus any monkey can make it.

And for desert.... ICE CREAM,  with every thing bad in it.  ;D
in a 4 or 5 quart ice cream maker
4 whole eggs (raw, uncooked)
2 cups sugar
4 tea spoons vanilla
1 can condensed milk
1 can sweetened condensed milk
Mix all then pour into freezer can
fill 3/4 to top with milk
assemble can put in machine barrel, pack with ice, use 2 cups rock salt on ice. plug in motor, add ice and salt every now and then. when motor stops unplug quickly. (I burned out one motor that way) ready to eat.
