Rust:

We'll disassemble the calipers all the way, clean them, new seals, I'll buy another phenolic if they're available (I broke one originally and subbed a SS one), new OEM pucks (if available). Better than ever.

brass wheel brush in dremel should clean up the transfer in the caliper. Just need a warm dry climate like AZ to eliminate some of those problems...might help your health as well...

Yeah, I lived in Tucson during my hippy-dippy days. It was quite nice.

Calipers should clean up nicely, good as new. Pads had something weird on them, almost looked like anti-seize compound, which was used on the 2 big caliper bolts. Into the trash, and new pads purchased, with new ORings and the hi-vac grease.

We had lots of Ace Hardware stores in AZ where I lived (Tucson and Sierra Vista) but they are hard to come by here. Ace is reknown for having lots of obscure stuff, or able to get it. Closest one I've found here is 25 miles away and I've not ventured over there when they were open.
Enjoy the day off and a warm cup of coffee/tea/chocolate...

David
The battle of the big box v the mom and pop has become the battle of the big box v the franchise (ACE). Lowe's is closer to me, now. But they don't have chrome and very little stainless. Still I buy big(ger) tickets from them.

The closest ACE closed (sad, 1 store couldn't compete) and the next closest ACE is 4 more miles away. (7t) Owned by a mini-chain that has 4 ACE stores on NS of Indy. But, they have chrome hardware.

I feel guilty sometimes and throw a bigger ticket ACE's way. But, capitalism is what it is, human nature.

I accidentally cut the 2 rr turnsignal/fender mount bolts, too short. Not allowing space for the rack mounting tab. That's 2 x $3 ea.  Maybe I'll buy another snow shovel from ACE as well.

A buddy of mine is the current owner of one of the original Ace stores, #7 I think, in Skokie, IL. He has a really good selection of stainless and chrome fasteners plus things linke tiny set screws and other hard to find items.

WE committed to a RampFree trailer yesterday. Bruce chipped in and we got the 5 spoke aluminum wheel option. Upscale. Pick it up on the 15th.

All eyes on the Rockers Reunion May 31st on 38th and Illinois. May not win anything but it would be a good outing.

Got the disc pucks today from DAIDO, forum member referral, off of eBay. They look suspiciously like the ones from Yamiya at 1/3 the price. No paint on the circumference, slight beveled edge on the A pad.

Crap.  Cant believe I'm going to miss the Rockers Reunion Event this year when you are bringing the bike for show :(

Working a convention downtown so cant make it.  Will be the first one I've missed for years.

Got any other shows on the horizon?

Crap is right, I was hoping you'd be there!

June 26th to 29th is the VJMC National Get together this year in sunny Spring Mill State park. I've got reservations in the Inn for 3 nights with the wifer. There'll be a show one day as well.  Then the MotGP is in August and CycleWorld magazine has a vintage show.

I'll make it to one of them.  There is a small chance that I can sneak out for an hour from the convention.....but wont know till the time comes and I wont be able to bring the Yamaha that's for sure.

Bummer.

Hey MC.

Just finished reading through the whole thread.  What a great build.  Hope you get to ride it to your hearts content.  Build reports like this really get/keep people enthused about what is possible with these bikes.  Keep up the good work and thanks from all of us arm-chair builders.

Thanks Kevan:
Its been a long road and its not over yet. The idea all along was that it be rideable, for whatever distance as Phaedrus I was. Several peope have sat on it and all comment on how comfortable it is. The riding position is very neutral and the controls are perfect.

The looks are controversial, that was by intention, but never at the expense of function. Can't wait to get more comments on that if nothing else.   :D

Ron

PS: One mod sacrificing function is lowering the ride height, reducing ground clearance. I won't be carving any corners.

Got the pistons out of the calipers by pumping them out, easy peasy. Thanks to Ed (Phoenix) for enccouraging us to do it that way. Would have been a mess otherwise. The SS piston came out covered in corrosion from the rusty pad. The phenolis one came out relatively clean.

I've got one of each as I broke a phenolic years ago. I've since scored anther SS and it will go back together with 2 SS, just for the symetry.

Spent balance of time cleaning the calipers, ready to reassemble.

Blisterpack for these pads has a copyright of 1984 on it.

Spent some time modding the combo muffler mount/centerstand stop. I hope Saldanas can take it as a template and make one from billet, or weld it up anyway.

Went and picked up the RampFree trailer last night. Pulled in to the proprietors house in the woods (35 miles closer than his shop) and saw it attached to his truck. It was stunning, great finish and appearance. We sprung for the 5 spoke aluminum wheels, thanks build buddy Bruce. They loosley compliment the 5 spoke chrome wheel covers on the Ford.  Worthy of Phaedrus.

Besides hauling Phaedrus around, this will make hauling the next 2 or 3 projects around to their various vendors for services, much easier.

Pictures this weekend.

Save the Trailer Queen comments, lord knows I'd rather be riding. But sometimes its not up to us.

Great news on the new acquisition!  We love pictures.
Now you can take Phaedrus to Mid-Ohio bike week and the Indy area bike gatherings.

Full down position:

Hooked up:

"Condor" wheel chock holds the bike upright temporarily while tiedowns are hooked up:

What looks like diamond plate appears to be some kind of chrome clad aluminum:

We super cleaned the calipers. They had black goo in them. I'm guessing some residue from the chroming process which i didn't clean well enough the first time around. 3 of the new pads fit well, the 4th needed to be sized with a Dremel. It was a B pad that didn't fit in the cavity loose enough to allow it to rock. When I put the pistons in, we had a near crisis. One went in firmly but nicely. Pushed it into postion with a piece of wood. The second piston we had heated with a hair dryer, to dry the soapy water off. I was able to get it in past the seal then it locked up. I pressed as hard as I could, but it wouldn't budge. Visions of grease guns in my head, and the attendant mess. Then I thought, lets heat the caliper with the hair dryer. After just a few minutes the piston moved easily past the seal into its cavity. Whew!

Then spent some time scrubbing the discs of any residue from the anti seize compound which seemed to be on everything else. Calipers are back together. Reinstall to fork and bleeding comes next.

The caliper pistons you installed, are they OE? or an even thicker tolerance O.D. than OE ?

That's a sweet little trailer Ron. Looks perfect for a bike and if it were mine I might even build a little box for it to use for a utility trailer. I wouldn't make it enclosed (but don't see why you couldn't). Just a floor and sides.

I think the frame could certainly handle the weight of an enclosed box on that one.

Mr. B.: The  company sells a version that is all diamond plate, no rail, for utility purposes. Either single rail wide or dbl rail wide. I'll be happy if I just use it for what its intended. I have a flat bed utility trailer. Accessories can go in the truck.

Grc: ITs rated at 2000lbs GVW. TRlr weighs 440, so, 1560 for the load. Its pretty beefy.
