I first heard it used on the FJR site I used to frequent. The urban dictionary indicates the first known use was from a ST1100 rally. Seems it came from the Sport-Touring community. The ST and the FJR being top dogs (among others) in the field.

Here's the chainguards in progression:
Top = too thin material, IT would waggle as you go down the road. The tail was curled down to wrap the sprocket. Didn't think ahead that if you do that, if the wheel was forward, and you adjust it for chain stretch the sprocket hits the guard. There's a reason the stock guard is shaped like it is.  Standards were welded to the blade, which looked fine, but one piece might be better.
Middle= material thick enough, machinist thought diamond cutouts would be nice, I didn't care for them, standards not aligned so blade  lay above the chain up near the front, with weight on bike it rubbed badly.
Bottom: Chamferred holes look better, standards appear aligned, may need a self administered tweak. I like that its made from one piece, no welds or bolts.

Soda bottle filler neck. WE had to use a crude plumbing fitting as all Saldanas trick filler necks are aluminum. NEvertheless functionality was the goal and I think we got it. Original design requires removal of the manifold to fill with soda. And the fiiller neck is that tiny blue tube. So we cut a hole in the tank and welded in the plumbing fixture.

WE're using a CB350F front fender as it hugs the 18" front wheel properly v the stock 19" front fender. And it appears to be a smaller replica of the CB750 fender. Drilled out the rivets holding the stock mount as we use the 2 open holes to hang the fender from the fork brace. But that leftt 4 open holes. These were welded shut and ground flush.

Brown's said if I got it that far, they would polish the welds down and chrome the whole thing.

So we'll try to get these parts installed today. Wheel balance will have to wait till next week when a new balance stand axle should be made. Don't know if we'll get a break in the weather to get another 30-50 breakin miles on it, which is what I would like before taking it to a dyno.

Finally I think we got a winner on the chainguard. The holes complement the holes in the rear sprocket cover.

The top blade has a notch in it to cozy into the shock. The rubber jawed pliars were used to give it some tweaks for a better fit. The aluminum bent easily.

One reason some customizers may neglect putting a chainguard on... If you run a 150 tire, it wiill be difficult to obtain clearance. I have a 140/17 with minimal clearance. But an inch is as good as a mile as they say.
Fender looking good. We'll switch from acorn nuts to nylock nuts. A little more business like, less garish.
I pulled the petcock to see if it was OK. Didn't seem to allow for a full 1 gal reserve. IT came out in two pieces. Should the white piece be inserted in the petcock, or does it stack on top. It came out in two pieces. Doesn't seem to be a standpipe in the filter for the reserve. Comments?

WE pulled the rotors off the wheel to freshen up the finish. Trouble with extended projects is the polished aluminum starts to dull before the project is finished. I won't get the hub back to the jewel finish it originally had, but it will look better.

Waiting on the new axle for the balance stand.

Thx Grc. It did finally come out nice. I told the machinist I wanted to still see as much of the chain as possible. IT was his idea to put the right angle bend on the tire side. That gives it a lot of strength without being visible. MAy catch some chainwax spray from hitting the tire/wheel.

I've been loooking at various draggbike pictures on the Perf Forum. They seem to all go with the straight flat blade approach, keeping it simple but legal. Theirs is usually several pieces bolted together.

I like mine being all bent from a single piece.

Really like the chain guard, its another of those small touches that really set your bike apart. So when are you going for the Turbo , S/C , nitrous etc...  ;D ::), with all of that chrome it'll look like a shooting star.

Thanks, the CG came out well. IT's going to the chrome shop later, along with several other things.

No Turbo etc., realizing tongue in cheek. The touring card will be limited, we will have enough hp to burn up the rear tire elsewhere.   ;)

AS Bud the painter said, "They'll see you coming".   :D

After its all done as is, I am considering one of the 6 new 4-2 pipes from Cycle-X.  The Marshall that's on it is so quiet, and that's what I wanted thinking I'd be putting on lots of miles. But now, in the show and drag venues, it would be better served making a little more noise, tastefululy.

Killing time till we get the balancing stand axle.

Reinstalled front fender. Recent mods to mounts will take.

Modified the front stay bolt on rear brake stay. Since we reset the swingarm mount flange to the outside to clear the tire, we had replaced the OEM bolt with a chrome buttonhead with a nylock nut. But, after a recent recount here of what happens when that bolt lets go and the brake actuator wraps around the rear axle... I decided to remake a longer bolt with the OEM style hole for a cotter pin. That makes it a lock washer, nylock nut and cotter pin. This should give me relief, especially since I'm asking other people to ride the bike for me.

Helped Ed (the Phoenix) get his original K1 ready for a trek to Daytona Speed Week in early March. Lent him some riding gear to try out: Bruce's riding pants and electric vest. What a man.

Ed (the Phoenix) dropped by. He's getting ready to do what I did 40 years ago, ride to Daytona from Indy, in the winter. A man of my heart, here's proof he's riding that original K1.

That's 10,000 miles, here and there and including a couple of sessions at the Dragon.

Build Buddy Bruce and I talked him into at least trying an electric vest. Before I knew better, I used one with Phaedrus I (and my CB77 and my HawkGT, and the Burgman as well as a few others) for thousands of miles and hours and hours. Never had a problem with the battery. The reasoning is at least partly because, one never has the vest turned all the way up, all the time. You would cook, especially if you had even a small shield. So BBB lent him his and a pair of riding pants. Along with his Wixom-like fairing and a little luck weatherwise (limited precip) Ed should have a great trip.

Picked up the balance stand axle from Saldana's. Perfect fit. Balance front wheel this sunday.

Dropoped off some parts: having holes drilled and chamferred in the muffler bracket to sort of match the holes in the chainguard. Took the Carpy's finned brake stay to have the end thinned. The bracket on the swingarm was moved outboard to clear the tire. That made it narrower than stock and the brake stay was an interference fit. Not cool. Having a broken clutch lifter plate welded to see what's involved. Probably an unnecessary exercise as Ed (Phoenix) tells me Cycle-ReCycle Part II sells them for $6.

  Pick those up next week.

Yep, i donated to the restoration when it first hit, got the poster at home in a cardboard tube waiting until i have a garage to put it on. I've been around the fourms for a while, just sold my 81 cb650 a few years back, i've got a 73 cb350f waiting on some love. Currently riding a 95 sportster thats hard to beat.I had the pic of Russ as my avatar for a while before the restoration effort started, loved the intensity in his eyes there.

The exhaust poster is best imo. Cant wait to see more progress, but something that over engineered has to have some tall hurdles. Russ jr is a class act too, It'd be great to meet him in person once this train gets rolling on nitro. Hijack over.

Last Sunday, we gotta good balance on the front wheel. Dang! Just remembered, the rotors are off of it. Oh well, re do time.

Got the muffler mount back from machinist, had him put some holes in it for looks only. Sorta match the chainguard mount and sprocket cover which all have holes in them.

Got the Carpy's finned brake stay back also, trimmed to a better fit.

Filling a box for Brown's.   ;D ;D  Merry Christmas to me.

For whatever reason a 15 minute job has consumed a few hours of shop time. ITs not that hard to balblance a wheel. But just when we think we got it, we leave it for a while and come back and its moved. So we took all the weights off and started again from scratch. Think we've got it now.

Been contemplating a mod on the brake pedal. With the case guard in place, a largeish shoe toe hits it when tickling the pedal. I'm thinking of weldong a tab pointing off to the right to give it a better feel.

Also going to have a mod done to the air fork mount. It really irks Ed, doesn't bother me. But it can stand some freshening up, I just carved it from a strap with a hacksaw, and it doesn't fit in.

Got some things to do to it tomorrow. But Monday I'm going in for a voluntary heart catheterization. When I got the first stent, June 2013, they left a few blockages at 70% hoping they would work their way clear with meds etc. (Fixed a 95% block with a stent) But I can't shake a chest pain with exertion, and I want another opinion. Going to a different hopsital for a different look. Should take a day, 2 if they stent.

See "Free Bird" new topic in projects, for a different thing.
