I'll be out of town Fri to Mon for a holiday with wifer. So trying to get some work done during the evenings.

Packed up and shipped a bunch of parts I sold to replenish the treasury.

Cleaned and stripped the rubber grommets off oil tank, will be taking the oil tank, the tool tray (first one has 2 little cracks and went unnoticed by me), sprocket guard, electronics bracket to powder coaters tomorrow.

Front discs too, the center hub of the disc is nasty black. Would be cool in gold. Don't know if they can powder just that center piece or not, with the rivets and all going into the oven.

Sorted thru my rocker pins, found 2 really good short ones, but the long ones are all scuffed up. I'll look to motogrid or whoever for new ones if available.

Got some running around and shopping done: Powder coaters say they powder coat rotor hubs all the time. So with Gold in the front and the sprocket cover in the rear gold, should be nice.  Oil tank too. I know you can't really see much of it, but it needed a new finish anyway, and what you can see will now be gold.

So rocker shafts are discontinued on this planet, so the nets are out. I need two of the long ones, preferablly old style, with minimal wear.  Nearing the end of the list of parts to be frozen.

Placed big order with Yamiya for rubber grommets, bumpers, and such. The old ones just broke into bits upon removal.

Had a small but timely windfall at work.

Gotta go change the oil in the FJR, taking it to Madison IN tomorrow. First ride in a while.

Hello! Thanks for the PM.

I found the 2 shafts I was looking for, so I'm set for now. I've been building a box of parts to give to the cryogenics people, and these shafts may have been the last on the list. I'll have to check.

I would use yours if they are ready before I am. I'm in no hurry either, but we'll just see how time plays out.

The later model shafts that are pinned into place certainly appear to have more wear, at least to my untrained eyes.

Gotta get caught up in the office before spending much more time with my project.

Been back from Madison for a few days now. Couldn't take the FJR. Waited to the last minute to check it out and the original battery just wasn't starting it with enough confidence that I would risk it out of town. I did ride it several times, took a few "loads' of small misc parts to the powder coaters as shakedown rides. When I got there and then went to restart, it went "ugh" and dash went blank, clock reset to 12:00, tripmeter reset to 0.  Started on the second try each time, but not leaving town like that.

So I got a new battry for install tonight.

Took the car to beautiful historic Madison. So hanging around this little Hotel (Riverboat Inn) right on the river was nice. A little stray pup was hanging around, very nice and friendly to everyone on the Veranda. No tags, a little worse for wear.  We gave it some of our little dog's food. And of course she latched to us. Our little Quincy didn't like the idea but tolerated her. We ignored the stray as long as we could. Come checkout time it was still hanging around so we left our contact info at the hotel in case the owners were to call, put her in the car and she slept the whole way home. Not a peep.

So the vet says she was pretty sick with worms, vaginitis, and stuff, 5 mo old Border Collie. We're getting her fixed up. The owners did call. A widow and 17 yo son from 60 miles away had been visiting in Madison and pup got away, can't imagine why, sweet dog. At first we were making arrangements to give her back, but now the owners are thinking they'll let us have her. I think the Vet bill is scaring them away. They may have bit off more than they could chew in the first place.  Either way feels good to have done the right thing.

God bless you MC. You folks are a blessing to this pup's life; Border Collies are high energy animals, and smart (being Scottish), or so I hear. Anyone who can't handle a sick animal is likely better off not having one. I don't mean that as a moral criticism.

I'm glad y'all had a good time, and loving historic stuff my self, it sounded great.

Ecosse and HM: Thanks. The owner had placed a notice on a radio show, which someone at the hotel tuned into, and we reunited Abby with her owner. They had been at the American Legion Hall about 7 blocks away from our hotel. The boy was pretty broken up about her leaving him. He paid us the Vet bill, and drove 100 miles to Indy with his Mom to pick her up.

We have mixed feelings, there was some reason she left her owners, but I think maybe this will wake him up to what it takes to care for a pet.  Told him to get some dad burned tags, this could have all been averted.

Hey, I helped turn a cable car around on that turntable, in 1956, with my dad! I was only 5 years old... You can't miss that building behind it. I think there's a family picture of the event around here, somewhere.

Got back to work on Phaedrus this week. Received an order from Yamiya, love their packaging.


$45 of new rubber grommets...


I don't know at what point this project became a show bike, but its approaching a nothing is good enough scenario. Still budget will have to rule on some things. For instance the battery box mounting rubbers are original. Got them out and back in without ripping.

If anyone ever replaces the buttons on the battery box, be known they are a bi--h. They will stand up to quite a bit of pulling, That along with some armorall and some rotation got them all in place without ripping.

I spoke with Mr Moyers. He said they would weld up the leaky seams from the inside. Seems to know his stuff.

Its amazing how many odd parts I found to take to the powdercoaters. In matching gold will be the front disc carriers, the instrument loops, the gas cap, a redo of the tool tray, the oil tank, the electronics bracket, the sprocket cover. That should give some nice continuity front to rear.

Edges of discs are gold, wasn't expecting that. Everything looking good. Not much of the oil tank shows below the sidecover, but hints do. It had to be refinished anyway so why not? The black was really nasty with large areas gone. It will have a nice new chrome locking dip stick cap from ClassicCycleCity.com

Got an appointment tomorrow AM at the NDT store (non-destructive testing) to magnaflux the primary chains and rocker arms. With all the time and distractions I've wasted, i could have just bot new chains, but these aren't even a 1/3 used up yet and I just hate not using good parts. After they prove out, I'll send them and virtually all moving engine parts and the lower fork legs to the cryogenics people to make them super slickery.

Bot the box from UPS I need to ship off my gas tank.

Each piece had a problem.

The disc carriers were brush painted black from years ago. No way.

The oil tank as mentioned was in real bad shape, ditto on the seat latch, etc.

The gas cap and instrument rings were really scratched up or rusted. Powder cheaper than chrome.

Didn't want to color the sprocket, so the sprocket cover was the next best thing.

I think it will look real nice.

If I might make a small suggestion...
 and feel free to reject it... but I think if you did the tank and side covers in a nice, deep black with a deep, deep gloss finish, it would set off the gold of the frame accessories in a beautiful way.

Very good idea.

In fact Phaedrus I was black and beautiful.  So was my Avatar. Its tempting.

But years ago, Chrysler had 4 fruit colors for its muscle cars. Red, Tangerine, Yellow, I think, and  "Plum Crazy Purple". I had a Triumph Bonneville chopper painted that color. It was a wreck. I swore someday I'd have something really nice painted Purple, so this is going to be it.

After a few years, anything can happen.

you're right about the mopar color name: an unsavory bit of trivia, the name they were mulling over (no lie) was statutory grape. it was a wacky time and the other colors had... uh, colorful names too.

like the idea of painting the sprocket cover, and those rotors are beautiful; the hole pattern and gold is sweet. i think this will come together nicely.

personally, i think you may have overlooked something that may impact how impractical riding this bike will be.

plan on getting stopped a lot by admirers.

Say the gold edges on the rotors is kinda nice. Hope it holds up under use.

I agree that adding contrast is a good thing, thats always been one of my design philosophies.  Too much of any one color can be overpowering.

hadn't heard that about Statutory Grape. That woud have been tough to sell in 1970.

I've done some searches and couldn't find, but all the colors had some name. Plum Crazy is the only one I remember.
