well got the carbs re-racked, what a pita it was working out the choke setup. since I believe in moderation a beer is now calling my name

gidday Bill. the surgeon is happy with his work and I'm now out of the sling, so it's just a time thing and lots of physio.
I've now got control over my hand so can now start working on small things like the carbs.

well the lawn has been mowed and the 650 positioned back into a workable place.
took the top end apart again as I wasn't happy with the head gasket but had put it together anyway trying to beat surgery time frame. glad I did, the aftermarket gasket was a lousy fit compared to the Honda item, I think it must of been for a 550.
so progress again but only slowly, still a month or two until I can ride again

so before installing the carbs, bench sync, float adjustment then accelerator pump check, WTF !!! there is no way the actuater gets anywhere near the pump rod, have been gazing at this for a while now and it's got me beat (at the mo)
to sooth my feelings I've pulled one of my other bikes out, 2 kicks and away she goes, the satisfying noise of an idling engine does wonders

Hey we all have days like that, I well remember putting the pump spring on the wrong side of the rubber diaphram!!
I know what you mean about the choke cables (and accelerator cables too) it's a balancing act on one knee to hook them up.
Discovered that CV carbs go on a damn sight easier than the old mechanicals Scunny.

$NZ 22.08 each fom David Silver and the same delay............. thank you internet. I'm going to do a butcher to my old ones in the mean time, I need to hear this baby run

time to check some things and stay away from the beer fridge, but it's pretty hot here at the mo so I might weaken on the beer angle

she runs, a tad rough but that is no surprise, I have no confidence in the carb boots, they were as hard as hell and I had to do a bit of grinding on them to get the carbs on. Wheres my new boots DSS( not good timing on the date of purchase)

Pardon me while I hijack your thread a moment scunny...

You know... I have a set of perfectly cleaned, new rubber innards all around, work great carbs stock to my '79 cb650 ... in a box.
For a reason.

1.) the repair bill on them was OUTRAGEOUS.(about 170-180 just for parts)
60+ for the 4 air cutoff diaphragms, then don't forget the $40 for the accel pump.
THEN you get to start buying the gasket kits.(I went cheap and got away with like $19 each kit...X4)
2.) compared to '69-'76 cb750 carbs they a re more complicated for a complete teardown and re-build.

For a 2 year specific set of carbs.
YEAH... no fun.

Went to '73 cb750 carbs...
I still like 'em. If nothing else but they are simpler to re-build(and cheaper), and the choke lever on the side of the carbs that works better(IMO) than the stocker 650 carbs

Not running them since I found the boots and the carbs off a '85('85-92??) 600cc ninja work... REALLY WELL.
Those cleaned EASILY, have yet to do re-build kits for them. 2 really good cleanings(missed the choke circuit on 1 or 2 of the carbs 1st time around)
But for those to mate to a cb650 with the earlier head you MUST use the ninja carb boots.
Have looked at '85, '88, and '91 carb boots(own '85,m and '88's), all of them have a jog in them, allowing the carbs to be a different spacing than the head, and work.

BTW, those ninja carbs line up nearly perfectly for the CV cb650 heads.
I really mean it, they are REALY tight in the stocker carb boots, but they fit.

Carb drain plugs usually tell the story, gas/no gas!

I restarted one of mine with a cocktail of 50/50 carb cleaner and high octane petrol.
Figured if it didn't kill it then it would at least clean it!

Main fault turned out to be a gas tank full of crud, something to remember when desperately trying to just hear bike run..

clean filters and tank, just to many vacuum leaks due to old carb rubbers.
todays project, pull apart front brakes, whoever came up with the idea to use a grease gun to pop out the pistons..thankyou thankyou thankyou

well upon assembling the brakes there are 2 caliper bolts per caliper, they all look the same but 2 of them, 1 from each have a rubber seal that I didn"t see because of all the crap. how come the other 2 don't have them ?
and while I'm in rant mood I spent ages today trying to find a master cylinder rebuild kit and finally found the match off a 78 750. must of been some mix and match going on

small steps Hush.
got the ignition sorted and the bike runs sweetly(still on the main stand) good news is I appear to have all 5 gears, must have put them bloody gear clusters together properly.
I'm now bleeding the front discs after a rebuild so no small bubbles please.
all going well, sort out the clutch and I should be off down the road in all it's bellowing glory.

EDIT...... who's the tosser that can't rebuild a MC

took the beast for it's maiden voyage, I love the snarl from the 4into1 but will have to remember to go easy on it for a day or two to bed in the new bearings and rings...........is that a pub calling my name

pulled the petcocks off yesterday, one was blocked so me thinks time to pull them apart and clean them, lovely little brass ones and lost a spring.bugger. that is now fixed after looking thru my boxes of interesting things.
today pulled the wheels to have new tyres fitted, some stupid decided to clean them up....4 hours later and loss of finger prints the back one is looking presentable, give me chrome over alloy any day, I want spokes
