750K8 Clutch problems "Now Solved"
« on: September 07, 2005, 04:50:41 PM »
I have just removed and reinstalled the friction plates on my 78 cb750K8
Put it all back together and POO! No clutch.  I must have missed something.

Called the Honda dealer mech that works on my bike from time to time, his only comment was that when I try to rotate the lifter plate it should not move. ..... Mine does now. What have I done wrong?

I have a free phone line  1-(800) 352-1137 if someone who knows this sh*t could give me a call.

I would really like to ride in the next day or so. I'm so close...and yet so far.......

Derek Ingram

OK, so it looks like I tightened up the screws on the lifter plate a bit to  tight and cracked the preasure plate a smidge
 :o

That wouldn't have been my earlier problem, but I suppose I need a new one of those now as well :'(

I cracked my pressure plate too!! and I installed and reinstalled my clutch several times with no grab, make sure you tighten down the pressure plate evenly, and I'd reccomend new springs too. there's a good clutch FAQ on here somewhere, that reccomends that all the
steal plates are arranged the same way, the plates are stamped, so there is a rounded side and a square side, when looking at the edges of the plates.  Make sure that all the steel plates are arranged in the same manner, so that all the rounded edges face the same way in the sandwich. hope that helps a bit

G'Day Derek, your lifter plate has to be perfectly aligned with your clutch hub to ensure that the "splines" on the first  steel plate engages with it, then you have to hold it all together while you evenly tighten the four 6mm screws on the pressure plate.

If you've had it apart, you may have to strip it again to take the lifter plate out, turn it 90 degrees, and start again, making sure all the plates engage. Make sure you replace your cracked pressure plate, or you'll end up with a chunk of it floating around in your transmission! What's the country code for Canada, I wanna try that 1800 number! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Sometimes tapping the pressure plate and basket (not to hard) with a soft mallet will align and seat the plates.

OK, so now I need a preassure plate.

Honda does NOT sell them anymore.

Anyone have an extra?

Honda no sell no more;-(

OK, I got another pressure plate from another 750 guy I know. Now.......when I put it all back in, how do I know if it is (all the way in)?
Right now I have bike in gear and when I turn the clutch the back wheel wants to turn. Do I have it?

All splines are in their slots including the last one, but.....they don't seem to be tight. I can still wiggle them if I put a screw driver on the outer one.
Also I would have thought that the blot head would be flush with the outside of the shaft. Mine is not, the bolt is still a smidge inside the hole.

New thoughts. Just went out to the shop and had another look. If I pull and wiggle the pressure plate towards me I can now feel it slipping into the rear splines. Feels good now. Very solid.  Bolt is still back a bit off the outer edge, but that certainly takes up the slack on the friction plates etc. Now I suppose the trick is to get the springs
and bearing on without that moving. Am I on the right track now?

I would help if I could. I know nothing of clutches except how to use them.

That's it mate, read my post again, you need to ensure that the lifter plate (the one with the four posts) is fully engaged. If it's right, the clutch plates will all be seated with no gaps and no movement. Make sure you tighten the 6mm screws in diagonal sequence, a turn or two at a time, like tightening the wheel nuts on a car. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Bloody Department of Defence telephone system, won't let me do it mate, as soon as I tap in the international code it comes up with the disconnect tone!

I've got a "block" on my home phone (oldest son thought it was ok to call all his friends on their cell phones) but if I can remember how to take it off temporarily, I'll give you a call.

Otherwise, my home number from Canada (or anywhere, I guess?) is 011 6 3 9408 5152, just remember the time difference! Cheers, Terry.  ;D

I will when I get home, in around an hours time. (can't access Yahoo or Ebay boohoo! thru the defence email system) I finish work at 4pm, but it's about an hours drive in my company truck back to the 'burbs" from where I work on a defence base in the middle of the bush. Cheers, Terry.  ;D

While you are doing this.....an Elite Force of Canadian Navy  Alberta Frog Men are shadowing the shores of AUS and planting cans of Canadian beer along the beach.

We know that if you are doing this during working hours.........WE CAN TAKE THE BEACH~ and then.........kangaroos, never mind.

Can you give them my address so they can plant a few around my garage? My beer fridge is in the south eastern corner of my garage, grid reference is: 128173.

Oh and let them know I've already counted what's in there, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. (I'm going home for the weekend, woohoo!)  ;D
