another neutral?
« on: September 09, 2005, 12:45:56 PM »
He all,

on recent commutes to work, I've noticed from time to time a that my transmission will act as if I have shifted into neutral, when I'm actually in or in between 3rd or 4th gear. Usually its just a quick over rev that is eliminated when I shift up or down.

This was a found project bike. Does what I describe indicate some issue with shift forks/selectors, or some other transmission issue that I need to look into?

Probably just a gunked up tranny or needs adjustment.

Wear thicker boots, you won't miss the shift ;D

Mine does the same on occasion, I just make a mental note to shift a bit cleaner on 3-4..or is it 4-5? :-\

Bent or worn shift forks.
I talked to a pretty good Honda mechanic many years ago.  He told me that the Cb500 clutch had a habit of dragging from ill adjustment and this made shifting difficult.  Frustrated riders would have to use lots more pressure on the lever to enable shifting, this wore the shift forks and sometimes bent them when they were stomped on.  The result was sloppy gear engagement and bad examples would pop out of gear regularly.

Just though I'd share...

My 650 also occasionally misses a gear and hits a phantom neutral... usually between 3-4 or when I'm engine braking too hard.

thanks for the replies.
at least I know I'm not alone in this phenmenon.

Are OEM or aftermarket shift forks available? I plan an engine rebuild this winter, would their replacement be something I could accomplish by myself, or are there special tools needed that only a garage would have?

Tools require: 3/8 drive six sided metric socket set; GOOD quality circlip pliers; rubber mallet; workshop manual. Last I knew dave silver had selectors at £20 each
