update - i've been working piecemeal the past two weeks to finally finish her up. let's start with the seat. i cannibalized the seat the PO had on there, and cut the foam to fit the new seat pan.

i glued a layer of carpet padding on the top like so:

then covered it with the vinyl that was left over:

not the prettiest job, but it was $0, so that's a success in my book. i may have a professional look at it later, but this will work for now.

time to address the front fender. i had carpy's bobbed fender painted with the rest of the tins, but i needed to fit the brace from the original. since i didn't have the original, i scored one of ebay:

the dremel took care of the rivets...

i took the brace to the wire brush, and here it is, ready to mount:

drilled a few holes in my nice new fender, and we are ready to install.

then i took care of a few small things - mounted some bar end mirrors, installed the shorter throttle and clutch cables, applied the honda tank decal, etc.

i hit a few snags with how it ran... after some head scratching, it turned out that i had screwed up the coil/plug wire order, so the firing order was all jacked up. i fixed that, and all seemed well. took it for a ride around the block, and when i got back, it was puking fuel out of the carb overflow tubes, and out of the carb body by the airbox boot, if you can believe it. soem friends helped me sort that out - the floats were hung up, so a little sandpaper on the pins, and it freed up nicely.

during the tuning, it was still really low on power, and we realized that it was only running on two cylinders - #1 and #4. when we swapped the coil wires, #2 and #3 were running, so we diagnoses a bad coil. this is a surprise, because they are brand new dyna usints. i called dynatek, and they agreed to take it in for testing. hopefully i hear from them soon, and i can have it up and running for the weekend.

in any case, i got her registered for use, and the cosmetic stuff is done - once the coil is in, i'll pronounce the project done for now. here are some pics of the way it looks currently.

Wow, really nice work.  I really like it.

I have wanted to see Carpy's fender mounted and painted like that too.  Thanks.

 :o

I don't know how I didn't see this thread in the works. My hat's off to you.  I've got a couple CB650's in the garage for similar rebuilds this winter and I can only hope to achieve the final product that you have.

Beautiful freakin' bike   ;)

I hope that you didn't toss the original bodywork.  You should PM me in the spring (when i have money ::)) and offer it to me  ;D

Cheers....Joe

OK - update time! Did some smaller bits that were bugging me. The stock speedo wasn't working, and I thought they looked a little big, so I changed the stock gauges to the smaller chrome ones from cycle-x. Work very nicely, and I think they look miles better than the stock units.

I also did some other cosmetic stuff - I added rear turn signals to fill that funky F rear subframe space and hole, adjusted the seat to be more level, switched the clip ons for clubman bars, and added a black stripe. Let me know what you all think....

Took her for the first shake down run today, and she did very well. Looking forward to putting some serious miles on her very soon. I also picked up another wiring harness off ebay for cheap, and I'm planning on redoing the harness and stripping it down to just the essentials over the Summer. Will solder all the connections, update the fuses, etc. I'mm try to install it when it gets really hot here in Vegas so I don't miss any riding time.

Awesome work!  My 750F project is still in the apart phase.  I was wondering how you finally decided to mount your Carpy seat.  Photos please!  Also do those cycleX guages work with the stock tach and speedo cables?  Thanks for the update. ;D
Here today, gone tomorrow.  Make the most of today!

thanks, guys.

imamoto - i epoxied a piece of 3/4" think plywood to the underside of the seat, and used heavy duty velcro between that and the frame. works well, and it's still convenient to take on and off as needed. i'll try to snap a photo today if i can. the cycle-x gauges were a direct fit with the cables - very easy to install.

fuzzy - the exhaust is stock. earlier in the thread i have a few pics to show. i just used the stock header and inserted a generic baffle from denniskirk.com, then topped it with a exhaust tip from autozone. cheap, and it sounds pretty good.

That's a really nice project you have there. Just curious, how did you attached your seat?

masonry - dyna looked at it, but found it was ok. the problem ended up being a wire that the PO had piggybacked off of the coil power wire to hook up god knows what. it was drawing enough cuurent from the coil to have it not fire completely m- thus, me thinking that the coil wasn't working. simply a matter fo cutting the wire, and voila! took a few hours of tracking down with a multimeter to find the culprit. more reason for me to make a new harness from the ebay one, to eliminate any other questionable wiring.

scar - the seat itself is mounted to the fiberglass tail with  more heavy duty velcro. it's a temporary set up until i can get the seat properly upholstered. that being said, that velcro holds really well, and it's not going anywhere.

As long as the fiberglass seat is secured well, the cushion is just for extra comfort. I think I will go down the velcro route as well for my project. Thanks.

How did you mount the seat btw.
