Well its a crappy pic but thats all I have.Ethyl gas was 56 cents a gallon when I had that car.It got 10 MPG average city or highway.

Cool, crisp morning air on Flathead lake and the sound of ripples hitting shore while seeing rocks and pebbles through eight feet of water like looking through crystal glass.  The odor of an old wooden boat soaked with fish and two-stroke gas and feeling it rock when Dad climbs in with our fishing poles. 

Hearing the putt-putt-putt-putt of the motor as Dad yanks the rope, then winds it around the starter pully and yanks again until there is a steady purr, then a whine as we head out toward deep water and listen to the steady splash-slap, splash-slap as waves pass under us.  And then silence except for small ripples hitting boat and rock it as we drift and fish. 

Gradual warming as sunlight clears the mountains east of us and fills the boat.  Finally a twitch and jerk as a trout takes my lure, followed by the thrill of reeling it in, seeing it jump, and finally bringing it into the boat. 

Fifty-seven years ago.  Seven years old.  My first time fishing on a lake, my first remembered fish, fishing with my Dad.


Flathead Lake is no longer as clear as I remember it then.  Perhaps a fluke of memory, perhaps the result of thousands of houses and mansions on the lake shore.  But I still feel a little of that first wonder looking through clear water to a deep bottom, watching sunlight ripples on the bottom, smelling and listening to the lake.

I need to go back.

Riding my bike through downtown Milwaukee during Harleyfest, surrounded by hundreds of Harleys, then getting the "knowing nod" from the guy on the old school Norton coming the opposite direction.  I swear, we had a "moment".  *sniffle*  Of course it was in that non-gay, very heterosexuals manor..........ahem, just to clarify.

Heading to work (or anywhere for that matter) in the a.m. when all is quite and dark.  Finding "that stretch" of road where almost no one ever is and winding the throttle up to 5,000... 6,000... 7,000 rpm then doing it all again with each successive gear.  Just you and the bike and nothing else.  L-o-v-e that growl when you hit 5,000 rpm and your normally calm bike takes on predatory sound.

 Mention of kickstart reminded me of a funny situation I encountered the other day outside a local shop.
 I was getting ready to  leave when these 3 middle aged guys walk up and start asking me about my 500, mostly stupid things but then one looks and see's something unfamiliar , "Is it a kick start bike? Hey look it's got a kick start, I remember those, does it start right up?"

 So of course to appease this moron I give it 1 kick and off I go shaking my head.
