Kerker 4-1 Installed?
« on: September 20, 2005, 08:37:13 PM »
Well, I got a great deal on a matte black Kerker 4-1 on e-Bay.  It is in great shape, and I just put it on today.  I had to do a little hammering and pulling to get the headers to line up right, but I finally got it.  I had some questions for anyone who has installed a Kerker on a CB750 K(1).

1.  What is that bracket on the muffle for, and has anyone cut that piece off and how?
2.  Is anyone else's center stand close to the chain now... does it need to be removed and how?
3.  Baffles?... is there any real performance value in removing them or drilling them out (tune-up afterward of course)?

When I put on my Mac 4-2 there was  now no longer a bracket to hold up the center stand. The stock exhaust had a widget on it to stop the center stand from comming up to far.

I had to weld and make my own bracket.

Here is an earlier post on this issue.
There are alot more...key in ....."center stand" into search at  top of page.

1.  What is that bracket on the muffle for, and has anyone cut that piece off and how?

The Kerker muffler is attached to the top shock mount by means of a long metal strap and a male/female spacing "stud?". If you cut the mounting bracket off and have no way to attach the muffler then it may ride too low and scrape the ground in turns or simply blow right off the bike during heavy acceleration.

2.  Is anyone else's center stand close to the chain now... does it need to be removed and how?

Your center stand stop was part of the original muffler. If you want to keep your center stand you will have to fabricate something to stop it before it hits the chain. New Kerkers come with a metal strip with a hole drilled in it which gets mounted to the center stand mounting bolt on the exhaust side. As the center stand pivots upward the metal strip hits the swingarm(I think) before the center stand hits the chain.

3.  Baffles?... is there any real performance value in removing them or drilling them out (tune-up afterward of course)?

Not that I'm aware of on a stock bike.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

You can buy medium and large competition baffels for the megaphone Kerker. Don't try drilling anything.

trism,if you dont care too much about how the center stand stop looks here`s what you do,now pay attention everyone im only gonna say this once  ;D.buy a piece of 1 inch angle aluminum  or steel with the holes all in it.then cut it and make it as pretty as possible, then paint it black and bolt it to the passenger foot peg hole on the left side of the bike and then wrap a clamp of some sort(i used a wire tie)around the frame tube and let the stand rest against the stop.now you`re done.class is over for today.thanks for attending. :D

I put a Kerker on an F3 (I'll get some pictures tonight). Its the chrome version as a "perfect" stock one came in through eGouge and was less than perfect to say the least. The bracket on the muffler is for a rod that mounts from the top shock mount to the muffler. I feel it looks unGodly and am getting one of the metal workers here to make up a bracket I made a template for to go from the peg mount.
The header slid into the stock head like it had eyes. A slight pull on the number one header and it dropped in as smooth as silk.

I'll get some pictures tonight.

Don't know if this is mile too late, but I snapped a picture today for you. The yellow line is the brace the factory used to support the cannister. I'm making up a thicker brace that will go off the two mounting holes for the old pipe mount and the passenger's peg. To not support this cannister is to have way too much weight hanging off of the head mounts. Weight/shock/ and vibration will fatigue something in short order.
I just don't like the huge factory bar from the shock mount, but for support and being efficient, its the best.
