Simple black leather jacket for a tall skinny guy?
« on: October 21, 2008, 05:13:12 AM »
Been poking around looking for a good thick leather jacket sans advertising/bling/piping/perf/racerx styling at a decent price.

The Fieldsheer Deuce 2 fits the bill but trying one on in a size 44 the sleeves come up short

Vanson would be my first pick but they're pricey ($500+).

Anyone have some recommendations/urls?

Thanks!

Dont get the Fieldsheer as I had the same problem...too small...oddly enough the Deuce I was perfect fit - however they no longer make these. You might want to try the AGV Stinger leather jacket - Italian fit - should have longer arms - I was thinking about getting one. There is currently another thread on leather jackets - check it out for links.

BTW - MotoGP jackets are a perfect arm length for my long arms. Same for Hein Gericke.

you might be interested in one of these from fox creek leather.  thick, heavy, no advertising, USA company.  I don't own one (I want one) but I've seen them in person and they look good.  They'll also make one up for you custom.

As a tightwad, I recommend eBay.  You may not want used, but there are a lot of people that get wholesale pricing and sell them with minimal markup.

IMHO, it's at least worth checking...

I have owned a Vanson Corsair (Old model - with competition grade leather) for years.  Great leathers, but I do not tihnk it will fit you like you want.  The armor in the corsair is good, and the manx you have shown (yellow) does noty have armor.  I'd buy another Vanson.  I am a standard large/XL (6'-0" 190#  - 17-33/34 typically wear a 44 or 46 jacket depending on the cut).

I just ordered a really nice Schott 641HH. and had it made to the pattern of the 141 long.  It fits well and will cover you perfectly, but it was expensive (being custom and horsehide).  It is sharp and very classic, but again has no armor.

If you are OK with a 1/2 leather-textile, I have always liked the fieldsheer Corsair my buddy has.  Seems to be a good midweight with a liner.

Also check out newenough.com  - I know a lot of folks get great deal there.  Then again... E-bay is also a good spot if you are patient.

You might check and see if Fieldsheer has a long cut jacket. My oldest son is bird chested but tall so
none of my jackets fit his long arms.  ;D

I think I noticed that maybe Alpinestars has a long cut. Vansons are a heck of a nice jacket though.

Vanson leathers are nice and sturdy, but they're cut pretty short in the arms and torso.  I'm 5'10" on a good day and my size 46 Vanson jacket is almost too short.  Brands like Hein Gericke and Dianese are cut for the more slender "European" builds.

Ebay is a pretty good source for good quality used jackets.  These things never really wear out unless they're crashed.  Plus you can ask the current owner's size and how it fits.

Johnson Leathers!!!!   Awesome fit and quality.

I second Johnson Leathers! I have a custom jacket made to spec for me in early 1980's! Quality is an understatement.

I picked up a factory second jacket from them recently and I love it. Just like a great Bates cafe jacket from the early 70's but new and modern...   It just so happens that I rent an art studio on the floor above their factory here in SF.

Hey, hey, hey, easy there.  that jacket is in the motorcycle line and it's fashonable.  It's just got extra room in the bust...

Cool looking... and it says they do custom so you can probably get whatever you want.  I'd ask about brands of zippers.  3.5 oz is the standard for Vanson leather, so if it is quality leather, and has a 3-3.5 oz weight, it may not be too bad.  At a retail of $415 on the johnson, I went with Schott or you may be able to get a deal on a Vanson when you get into the custom prices.

Your main problem is being tall and skinny.

I had one of these for many years. Traditional, no bling (or padding). I wear cordura with armor now, but been thinking about getting a leather one again.

You'll note the sleeve length was ample. I have monkey arms and it was too long for me, except when riding. It was perfect.

Hey, Im a tall, lanky guy myself (6'5" 225lbs) with 36-37" shirt sleeve. I found that I like the Firstgear Scout IV. They make it in tall. It has nice pockets and a removable liner. Has removable crash pads too. Can be price though, $400.

Well the Sportsman's Guide is right down the road from my place. To be honest with you, I wouldn't buy a leather jacket from them unless you just want it for style and not to ride with. They have some decent hunting stuff, but thats all I would get from them.

With out preaching too much, you want a good leather jacket. Remember, it's your skin we are trying to save here. If you plan on riding for a few years to come, spend the money. If you are low on cash, check out Ebay or Craigslist.

Done with the lecture  ;D

Well, they are a discount store. Most everything they sell are products that people wouldn't buy the first time around in other stores. Basically cheaper quality stuff. It's kind of like buying a NIB $35 helmet off Ebay. Helmets and Jackets are safty devices, they protect your body. IMO buy the best quality that you can afford, not that you want to afford. It's your life. You know what I mean.

Look, I agree with you on the quality of the jacket, that's why I asked. Currently I own a spiffy Joe Rocket space suit with armor that I can barely stand to look at and is... incongruous with this new (to me) bike.

So price and cut are an issue and, it seems, a $200 jacket is more than acceptable to my needs for style and quality (see the Fieldsheer at the beginning) IF it would fit my freakish Mr. Fantastic arms and bird like chest.

None of the jackets prices are a real issue given enough time but it is a little disappointing that most all have to be plastered with manufacturer gee-gaws and embossed hoo-ha.

All of the suggestions to date have been great. So, back on point, who knows anything about MAS and Milwaukee Leather?

eh, it's up with the bike and even the internet refuses to cough up a pic. It's a 2001-2ish textile job with the reflective piping, embossed weirdness and pucks and so on, fraying a bit at the cuffs. Good enough but I don't think it's even worth shipping at this point.

The helmet is where I'd rather plow the money as mine's a bit long in the tooth and it was getting progressively looser every year (or my head is shrinking). Liked to tip up a bit if you let the chin catch the wind during the whole 2 weeks I had this bike before I started in on it.

Sigh... Not long now...
