hand built chopper I saw yesterday.
heads and barrels suggest air cooled ,

yep that's a radiator but from how it was plumbed I think it is an oil cooler for the transmission, auto

EDIT looking again those barrels could be water cooled

Oil would be through thinner lines. Besides, the radiator would block air from getting to the heads.

The bottom pic from appearances the radiator is plumbed to the intake manifold. Most V-8's are like that. Didnt Buick make a small aluminum v-8 for the opel many years ago?

Does that bolt pattern for the tranny look like a small block ford? The fins on the end of the head are bolted on so that dont matter.

Perhaps the 215CI aluminum V8 that Buick used in the early 60's? Some were even supercharged or turbo'd. Sold the engine to Land Rover and they may still be using a version of it.

Yep, you are right. The distributor in front, shape of the valve covers and thermostat housing location are small block Ford. Very cool bike!

buicks and pontiac engines from the 60's had the dizzy in the front.
And I still have the scar on my middle finger to prove it.
I was 16 and setting the points on my mom's 67 buick special, the little window for
setting the points was right between the alternator belt, the belt grabbed my
finger and ran it round the alternator pulley. I had to walk to the doctors
office for stitches.

I'm going with the Buick 215 AL engine as stated above, though I've never
actually seen one.

........ if it was built 'back in the day' add 221 and 260 to the 'possible' list. The skinny intake manifold with vertical mounting bolts is another Ford clue.

It is not a 215 - that being a Buick engine would have the distributor protruding from the timing chain cover. The 215 also has an almost perfectly round bellhousing without that 'hump' where the top two bolts are. The bike wouldn't need a kickstand - just lean it over on the Buick's oil pump.

btw... one of the locals has an Olds F-85 Jetfire with the turbo 215 - interesting looking package.

the pic of a Tiger has been erroneously placed with the Buick/Rover V8 .

the Sunbeam Tiger used Ford power - the 260 in early models and the 289 through end of production.

the Tiger died when Chrysler acquired Hillman/Sunbeam(remember the Plymouth Cricket?).... they didn't want to buy Ford engines and the 273/318 wouldn't fit in a Sunbeam Alpine no matter how hard they tried.

The Rover V8 began life as the Buick 215, an all-aluminium engine introduced for the 1961 model year. The compact engine was lightweight, at just 144 kg (318 lb), and capable of high power outputs: the most powerful Buick version of this engine rated 200 hp (149 kW), and the very similar Oldsmobile "Jetfire" turbocharged version made 215 hp (160 kW) (both numbers SAE gross). Based on sales volume and press reports, the engine was a success. Buick produced 376,799 cars with this engine in just three years. A comparable number of Oldsmobile 215 engines were produced. The aluminium engine was relatively expensive to produce, however, and it suffered problems with oil and coolant sealing, as well as with radiator clogging from use of antifreeze incompatible with aluminium. As a result, GM ceased production of the all-aluminium engine after 1963, although Buick retained a similar iron engine[1964-1980], as well as a V6 derivative[1962-2008] prove to have a very long and successful life.

that makes two things I learned today.... the other was something about electric outlets and wire and such. no, I'm a slacker.
I didn't have a pic to replace the bad one with anyway.

hey Mark, this was the part I liked....

The Australian firm Repco converted this engine for Formula One by reducing it to 3 L (≈183 cu in) and fitting a single overhead camshaft per bank rather than the shared pushrod arrangement. Repco-powered Brabhams won the F1 championship twice, in 1966 and 1967.[3] For the 1968 season, the Repco engine was fitted with new four-valve, dual overhead camshaft heads. This made the engine roughly as powerful as the Cosworth DFV, but proved to be too much for the stock block, which broke on many occasions. Repco also experimented with 4.2 L (≈256 cu in) derivatives of the Rover V8, to some success despite problems with massive vibration.[4]

The Rover version of this engine was extensively developed and used for rally racing, especially in Triumph TR8 sports cars.
