yeah. it's been posted before and to me it's like watching a helpless animal being tortured.

imo i consider stuff like this lazy "art" as it's merely a spectacle, and contributing nothing of artistic value. what's next, a crucifix in a jar of uri... oh, never mind. $:-\$

on another subject: my latest art piece will involve a running chain saw to the artist formally known as "the boob who chained up a honda motorcycle and let rip with the throttle."

Only with 2 coats of latex and a roller, but I'm going to get back into the oils when I retire in about 7 years....Thanks for the nice comments.

I'm making my wife a gold ring for our 10 year anniversary. It will be made with 18 karat gold and for now an 8mm oval garnet of exceptional clarity. When money is flowing more I'll replace the stone with a ruby of the same size(the stones I've been looking at cost more than both my bikes

) I've got the ring shaped out in wax, still thinking on the setting. I'll casting the ring using a lost wax mold. This is the first time I have done anything like this, and I'll say that so far it's a lot of fun. I'll try to post pics as I go but I've got to be careful that she not see the evidence and spoil the surprise. Wish me luck.

blasty, i can't wait to see your work. i've wanted to try lost wax my self one day but yours really is a labor of love.

Here is the rough shape of the ring. Like I said I'm still thinking about the setting hence the large chunk of wax on the top.

in a seminar i attended the speaker cautioned against placing links at the bottom of a page. they suggested top or side... and that's about all i recollect from that.

something many artists seem turned off by is the idea (especially for free lance) is the fact that one needs to be a salesman, and needs to "sell" one self. a bio and some kind of artist statement is encouraged.

I love lost wax. Are you going to be doing the investing (burnout and casting) or are you taking it somewhere? The one thing I've never been able to get 'right' is that somehow the ring is supposed to be very slightly smaller than the wax mold you've carved, and i always over-shoot and the ring ends up being way too big.

I'm sure yours will turn out great, and it's such a neat and unique thing to do.

Maybe try looking at various settings in jewelry shops, particularly the ones that make their own pieces, and get an idea. Some artists are so happy to find another enthusiast that they'll offer a lot of very good advice.

Update on the wife's ring. well after messing up the first wax mold and redoing it the entire family getting colds first, then the flu and now three infected ears between my son and I. I finally cast the ring tonight with failure. The burn out of the mold was incomplete and the crucible fooked me so I lost a little gold in the throw. So back to square one.

Don't know if this meets the criteria for this thread, but I just watched The Third Man last night, directed by Colin Reed (I think) and theres about a dozen shots in this film that are just out of this world. Piles of rubble, crazy old buildings and creepy shadows in all the right places. Just stunning...
