wow zack thats a sick bike. I like the pipes, deffinetly a one off idea. I was wondering if your tank hit your coils when you mounted it? Im awaiting a mustang tank in the mail and im putting it on a mostly stock 1980 cb 650

where do you get a springer for a 550?

The springer is a DNA springer and made for Harley-Davidsons. I am goin to get a new neck stem bolt custom machined at a local shop very soon to get it to fit right. So if anyone wants a neck stem bolt that accepts a DNA springer with stock Honda bearings let me know and I'll have them make an extra.

The headlight is brass and off of a 1910 era Cadillac that I converted to accept a DOT tribar headlight. The pipes are stock headers off a honda 4-4 system and I had the tailpipes made at a muffler shop for under $40 including parts and labor. They have a simple 45 degree bend and I put tractor muffler covers on them (not sure what they are actually called but they flap open and closed) I am making the seat and handlebars custom.

SOOOO glad to see a thread for bobbers...you guys ROCK!!!

Just starting a rebuild of a 78 CB750. Not sure exactly what direction it's going but it will definitly be bobber inspired. I'll start a thread on it once I actually start making some progress...

Hello..newbie here..will be starting a budget softtail/bobber style with a 78 honda 550k soon...question for tech10 and BT650..how did you do your seats?...I'm trying to figure this one out...alot of what I am seeing is custom reshaping of foam ..etc...thanks for your answers in advance...

p.s. if anyone else has any suggestions on the seat or my project for that matter, i am open to learn and for all suggestions! Thanks!!

I found a seat on Ebay and compared the dimension to what i was looking for. The seat matched what i was looking for in width and length. I got it for $9. It was old... When i got it, i tore it down to just the seat pan. Then formed the pan to what i was looking for in order for it to sit down on the frame. Then i took a bread knife and cut the foam cushion. Last took it to an fabric shop and showed them what i was looking for and also had a picture of my bike. $50 later i had my seat. And it pays to have a professional to cover it. As for as mounting, i drilled two holes in the back of the seat and welded a nut on it so a screw will tighten it down.

yea il get some more pictures> Putting the solo seat on my cb 650 was surprisingly easy. but i also have access to tools and a welder. For the perches i took a piece of solid round stock 1/2 inch thick and cut two pieces about 3/4 to an inch long. Then i drilled a small hole in each of the pieces of metal for a trailer pin. I used the trailer pin to hold the springs of the seat down and a nylon lock nut and washer to keep it on the seat. Then for the front mount on the seat i used a bolt through a piece of pipe so the seat can still pivot and put a clamp which is secured by the old tank mount. Il take some more pics so you can better understand what im saying though.

Hell I could make you some struts. Or there's several others who could do that for you also. And others who probably have them for sale. Maybe.

Pretty simple. Round, square, thick flat stock, turned, all kinds of stuff will do it. Some use heim joints at the ends some don't.

Basically whatever however you want em is an ok way to go.

I'm trying to mount the same one but not sure what to do b/c the springs sit ~ 1/2 outside of the rear frame rails where I want to mount it...

look at solo seat ideas needed along with pics and there you find my pics from how i rigged up my solo seat. Originally i didnt want to get springs but my dad pointed out that after a while i might break my seat if it was riding on just the threaded coupling. SO i have extra suspension and i sit a bit higher than i want but if i put my seat where i would want it i would have an even bigger gap in between the tank and seat that would also show some of the battery which i would want.
