Oregon DMV
« on: August 11, 2008, 07:53:47 AM »
Does anyone else think that they suck? In the last year they have threatened to suspend my liscense for "failure to fill out a traffic accident report" on an accident that I reported (and filled out the accident form) so that the other driver would get suspended (I had his name and address), and when I called them I had to flat out threaten them to get them to go pull the file on the accident, a file in which my report was the originating paper work.

When I went to get my motorcycle permit, I passed the test, they said I failed it (the computer said I got a 85%) had to get the manager to come pull my test score off the computer (I passed) because the guy at the window was a dick. He said I got a 50%... excuse me I can read a manual...

Now I need to get my motorcycle endorsement- and in order to get it done before the end of September I have to somehow get my bike to Corvallis- which seems to mean trailering it there.... I even looked into the team Oregon Classes (I had Motorcycle Endorsement before I moved to Oregon, probably 30K miles on my last bike- TO would have been painful) but they are full up too. Then when I get to Corvallis I have to give them 77$- 28$ of which goes too.. Team Oregon?

BAH... I just want to ride...

OK I am done venting now.

Does ANY DMV provide a good experience? I've lived in a couple states and I've never found them to be overly helpful, or resourceful when there is a problem, they universally have the "my way or the highway" mind set. In WA, it's the DOL. Where I live in Kitsap County, you can't do registrations at the DOL. Oh NO, you have to go to a private company to do that and pay $10.00 extra. I wonder who who's palm got greased in that deal.

Now I'm done ranting!

I have lived in a few states too, and while agree about the 'tude, OR DMV seems to make so many mistakes that the mirage of infallibility wears pretty thin.

On a related topic.

Has anyone taken the DMV skills test on a 750? some of myt riding buddies say that I should get a smaller bike but I feel like I should be able to pass the test on the bike I ride. It has been a loooong time sine my last motorcycle skills test (16 years) so I can hardly remember what I did (that was back in my wake-n-bake days).

So anyone have any pearls of wisdom?

When I moved to Nashville, first thing I did was to ask the DMV whether I was allowed to drive with my international driving licence. They said no, I had to get a Tennessee driving licence. When I went to the DMV office for the test and I gave my hotel address as my address, they said I couldn't get a licence because I was not a Tennessee resident....

Got to have my company writing a letter saying I was working for them and I would be living in hotels as I was expected to travel a lot, to have some supervisor agreeing to issue a licence.

I wanted to get a motorcycle licence too. This time, three months later, I applied for the licence. Nobody there seemed to remember me, so I just showed three letters addressed to me as a proof of residence. It was my company office' address, and they were three letters I previously had sent to myself. Talk about stupid regulations.

After all my experience with the DMV employees, I couldn't help but remember Homer Simpson's sisters-in-law, and I was almost certain that Matt Groening had experience with the DMV before creating the characters....  ;D

Go to the DMV on Powell. That's where they admisister the test. Get a copy of the Motorcycle book (it tells you what the test entails.)
Or watch them give the test to somebody else, it happens pretty frequently.

I live just down the street from that DMV- but they don't have any appointments open until October. I have to manage to get my a$$ down to corvallis on the the 26th, with my bike. ... grrr...

Anyway maybe I will go down and check out the test being given. I downloaded the test specs from the PDF file, but seeing it on the ground will give me a better idea.

You'll want to practice it, too. Some of the low speed manouvers are tough and you only get one chance to do it right.

I actually ended up taking the Team Oregon class. Which was cool because the training they have you do IS the DMV test. If you pass the class you automatically have passed the DMV test.

Any time a friend of mine takes the test I loan them the wifes CL350 ;D  Not the 750.

I have done the test on my 750 for kicks when it was slow at DMV with wife,  without any difficulties , but I have been riding 25 years.

Why not just use a smaller bike to get the test out of the way?

One the other hand if you feel confident go for it!!!!!

I did Team Oregon, too.  I was the only previous non-rider to pass in my group, but I thought the low-speed stuff on a 250 was easy.

Not much. I took it here in WA on a GS1100e (when WA had cc classes - it's different now I think) and passed so the CB should be cake. Just head over to your local DMV if you can, get a copy of what they'll want you to do and practice. Hardest thing for me was making the ninety in the boxes - the rest was pretty easy if I recall correctly.

Yep, looks like the same test - looks like you already got it  :D
