Borrani rim stampings?
« on: March 03, 2009, 06:09:35 PM »
I scored a K1 roller basket case with some Borrani rims and ceriani forks and was curious about the stamps on the Borrani rims.  http://mptrackclub.com/Photos/cb750_k1/cb750_k1.htm

they are stamped
front "Borrani WM2 19 Record RM 01 4523"
back "Borrani WM3 18 Record RM 01 4403 made Italy B"

The 19 and the 18 are the size but does anyone know what the rest of the stamps mean.

And b/4 you ask I plan on restoring the bike to its former cafe racer glory so no the rims are not for sale!

WM2 is 1.85 rim width, and WM3 is 2.15, but can't tell you with the rest.

I dont know what the stamps mean, but if you look at the rear wheel spokes at where they meet the nipples, they arent at a straight pull and are apt to break (1 spoke is broken already). The rear rim is probably for a smaller disc brake hub as the angles of the holes in the rim would be different to match up with the larger drum brake hub (to give a straight pull on the spokes).

That rear wheel is looking for trouble.  Not on my bike or my life.  The rim was laced to a straight-pull hub, likely a disk brake model.  Mid-70s Moto Guzzi front is a possible source.

Yup, but salvageable perhaps. If you upgrade to a larger diameter spoke and nipple, you can re-drill or have it re-drilled to your hub. The larger nipples will will take up the larger hole and you're back in business.
PS: "Record" is the marketing name for Borrani rims. I've never seen a Borrani 18 stateside, I tried for months to find one and had to settle for an Akront. So if it was stripped from a moto guzzi, would explain the Italy. The rest of the numbers are likely just manufacturing identifiers. Just a WAG.

I've been told that redrilling it is possible, but I have been told that you should redrill all 40 holes to the correct angle, instead of "correcting" the 20 that would'nt lace up fine.
Had the same problem with these Borrani's.

Sure, a drill should be run through each hole at the proper angle just to be sure. Some will have more material removed than others, no shortcuts.

Just a casual remark, means nothing: I've seen some pretty scary looking wheels with spokes taking a nasty bend into the rim hole. But with the oversize spokes, no breakage. Still, hardly best practices and its too easy to do it right or have it done right.

As Brent says, WM# is the width size. They start at WM0, this takes a 2" to 2.25" tyre, WM1, 2.5" to 3" and so on.

On the back rim there are actually several broken spokes and a fair amout of lose spokes.  That is one of my concerns with the bike as I sure don't want the back wheel to come unraveled on me while I am going down the highway.   What is a good source for larger spokes and nipples?

Not to hurt too many feelings but I did pick it up for cheap!

I've got a feeling that Record is the later Borrani marque. Original borranis are stamped only as Boarrani and apparently the pitch of the hatchings on the inside of the rim where the tyre bead sits is closer than later Record versions (company buy out?). Original borranis are like gold dust which is why records and akronts are the common ones, they are later variations.

I have a friend who can tell everything about a borrani rim by feeling it in the dark!  ;D

Thanks mine were a little sloppy.  They'd get you there but not without weeding thru a list of alternatives.

This stuff is getting expensive, but I quess it's all relative. I just bought one shouldered WM4 Excel and two sets of polished spokes and it was just under 600 bones. Man I sometimes long for the old days!  :P

Thank god I put Borrani's on my 550 when they were still in business. (1979)
That e-bay price just quadrupled the value of it  ;D
