If they know about it... why not just wipe your system and start over?

If you write over the bastard several times it'll hard pressed to still be there.

Don't laugh too hard about SARS and the bird flu...

The flu of 1918 killed more people than WWI did (including civilian casualties).  No joke.  In the Spring of 1918 there was an outbreak of influenza.  It came back in the Fall of 1918 with a vengeance (when it did the most damage).  It was also called the Spanish Flu.  It was a worldwide pandemic.  Only a few scattered locations weren't affected by it.  I even read about an eskimo village in Alaska, population 80, that was infected (by missionaries of all people... gee thanks!).  After the flu of 1918, 72 of the 80 people of this village were dead.  Of course, this particular flu was not like any flu you, I, or anyone else alive today, may have had.  It's a curious thing that more about the 1918 flu is not in history books.

This particular flu virus of 1918 also affected pigs (a 'swine flu,' so to speak).  That is, pigs (and ferrets) could catch this same particular virus that affected humans.

When a virus jumps species, it is particularly virulent.  That's why health officials are particularly cautious about the bird flu, the swine flu, and other such viruses.

(It's also of interest, that once you catch a flu or cold, you never catch the same one again.  You become immune to it.  So every time you've had a cold or flu, it has been a different strain each time.  These viruses can mutate so fast, that there are several new strains each year.)

If you've been keeping up on your updates it should have been solved back in October. If not, now's probably a good time.

The whole scare the crap out of people mentality of the modern media is what I am trying to make fun of Sochiro. We were supposed to be scared out of our minds according to the corporate media. Last time I checked, none of those horrible things came to fruition.

Swine flu killed a lot of people, so did the bubonic plague and Polio.
Sometimesd there's just not a whole lot you can do about some of these things.

Oh.  I personally don't care who is scared.  But diseases are real.  And the 1918 flu, that killed more people worldwide than WWI, soldier and civilian alike, regardless of nationality, really did happen.

Some of these diseases we can be vaccinated for (e.g., influenza).  Some not (e.g., Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy).

1918 was the year my grandmother was born; while paying respects to deceased family years ago, i noticed a lot of headstones dated 1918. many were children and were among whole families who died that year. i thought then how fortunate it was my grandmother didn't fall victim.

Estimates for the death toll range from 20 to 100 million worldwide.  Almost certainly, 20 million is too low.  This was when the world's population was 1.7 billion (as opposed to the near 7 billion today).

And it's a lot easier to travel the world today than it was in 1918.

With modern medicine we are going to see more and more nasty viruses.

Back then it was natures way of saying.... too many people.

Now nature has to step up her game to keep things in balance. Even though we do a pretty good job of killing each other on our own.

Diseases are crazy.  If anyone's interest is piqued, read up on how the human immune system works to fight bacterial and viral infections.  It is a system that rivals any war strategy on the battlefield.  Absolutely an amazing thing.

Then, read up on how certain bacteria (e.g., E. coli O157) or viruses (e.g., HIV, Hepatitis, Herpes) have evolved to defeat our immune system.  It's really a humbling experience.

And then, there's even these crazy malformed proteins, called prions, that can cause your brain to form wormlike holes (like a sponge) and insure your early death.  This is the incurable Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, or Mad Cow Disease.

I certainly don't advocate living in a bubble (in fact, parents that have been too careful protecting their babies from germs may have inadvertently given their children allergies...).  It is important to be exposed to germs to keep your immune system up to date and properly conditioned.  However, being exposed to one of the really bad germs is bad.

(By the way, an allergy is a malfunction in your immune system; your immune system is tricked into thinking a harmless particle (like pollen) is a pathogen.  The discomforts you feel are the side effects of your immune system waging war against this harmless particle.)

Actually... I saw a thing on discovery once where they interviewed all these top brains to come up with ten realistic doomsday scenarios.

A rampant, mutated flu strain ranked in at number five.

Yeah there is nothing to be done for some of this stuff, but think about that for a minute.

We spend all this time building up our civilization, fight many bloody wars, the University of MN just made a huge breakthrough for fighting breast cancer, and we get wiped out by a tiny microscopic organisim. What a crappy way to go...

no if you'll excuse me i'm going to put on a cure CD and put on some black eye liner.
