CB750 Frame Repair Kits - Discontinued
« on: May 03, 2009, 07:12:12 AM »
Guys,

No more frame repair kits -

I have been asked by a dozen or more people about the frame repair kits in the last few weeks. I don't want to do them anymore and I welcome, actually encourage someone with the machining skills to pick up the torch. I've done about 30 for many of you guys, but getting these on a regular basis has been difficult for me lately since Mr. Charles is slowing down. He deserves the rest and I'm not excited about putting hundreds into materials to get them done in bulk just to break-even or take the loss. To date these have cost me about $300 out of pocket and the time to round-up the materials and shipping. I'm not complaining, as you'll remember these got started because I needed a solution for my own bike and you guys liked what I did. Mr. Charles loved the supplemental income, and all was good in the world.

Now, for someone that can show the skills and machinery to do them, I will help you with measurements, theory, and materials resources - all free. That will be my contribution to the community.

I've got one set promised to Fletcher and it is my last one. I appreciate the support and the feedback on these parts. It was certainly gratifying to see something I thought of actually work -

 :)

Thanks Guys,

Gordon

Thank you for having done this project, Gordon. It is rare that someone will put other enthusiasts' good ahead of his own.

I've used the three sets I got from you earlier, and would be willing to gather cost estimates for continuing the line. I live in a hotbed of machinists and fabricators who could all use additional ongoing income.

If you have drawings and specifications for the connectors, please feel free to email them to me. I'll keep the board apprised of my progress.  Thanks!  RR

I truly appreciate your (and Mr Charles's) efforts Gordon. I will be installing my kit after building a 1000cc engine. I have complete body work for my 75F and will be doing a complete makeover. It should be hot. ;)

Gordon, Thanks for providing those and helping eveyone out.

Iwas trying to keep this quiet, till I got it done, and I have hit a few snags.. but I am also working on a kit.. even last night.

Basically it will accomplish the same end, except it will weld in and not need removal. With that though come a few sacrifices. You will probably have to mod a tank, underneath.

Mainly though, I am working on a kit that will change the width of the frame rails at the tank/seat junction, as well as allow top end removal. This will likely require less mods on the tank, but may make it difficult to run 76 or earlier carbs on the 750.. I am working on that.

So It is slowly coming together, just working on some dies & such.. it wont happen overnight, but I am working on it.

Gordon,

Thanks again. Glad I got mine when I did. It hasn't been installed yet but Mike will be receiving the head tomorrow and Jay has the cylinders and the 900 kit. Hope to be breaking the bike down before end of year and put your kit to good use.

What do you have your hands in now?

ps Mike doesn't need to be making over the Million Dollar 900F - He needs to build another bike! Leave the masterpiece alone!! We always need another bike  ;)

Jerry, I'm going to take a break. Since the Honda CB750/836 K4 build, I've done some other fun and challenging restorations.

You remember the 1967 CB450 Black Bomber "trash to treasure" - definitely my most ambitious project to date.
You remember the KZ900, from a $3,500 eBay bike to one I put in the Barbers VJMC show back in October.
Then I'm almost done with the 1974 GT750 Suzuki  a 3 cylinder, 2 stroke. It's going to be a beauty.

What I'm going to do now is some touring and I want to resume my piano and weight training. I was into weight lifting for many years and I miss that disipline. I've never done a long trip, I'm 51 and this year we have one planned that's over 7,000 miles and loops the Grand Canyon and a possible 2nd one to upstate New York, Toronto, and on up to Montreal. These are untested waters for me, but I've recently armed myself for the task -

When I turned 40 several years back, I started thinking about the things I wanted from life and which of those were "not achieved". By the time I was 41, my wife found me a piano and I started lessons which I stuck with for 3 years. I was certified for open-water diving by the time I was 45 and I've made 200 dives since then. The dream of learning to fly went away when a long-time family friend who'd been a charter pilot in his own small planes for 30 years died as his plane and passenger flew into tree tops in North Georgia mountains during a thunderstorm. I figure if he couldn't do it, I sure couldn't and I gave that dream up. Now, I'm 51 and the dream of getting on the open road with dear friends is one of those unrealized.

This GT will be my last bike. I've sort of satisfied my childhood dream of restoring old bikes. Restoring and collecting is actually something I've wanted to do for many years. I enjoy the build more than the product or the ride. Heck, some of the restorations have never been started after completion. Again, it is the build that I love most. The realization that I can't keep any more has sunk-in. Just keeping batteries charged and those bikes that are serviced up and running is a pain. Pain and hassel was never intended for the mix.

Not to preach, but at my age, I seem to be losing friends and family faster than I'm making them. It's time to get out and enjoy. Have any of you watched the "Long Way Round"? Do yourself a favor and find a copy on DVD. It will stir your soul.....

Regards,
Gordon

Well Gordon, good for you!!!

I went the opposite direction.  I traveled a bunch a miles on newer bikes (Honda and Harley) did the AZ, Grand Canyon, Utah trips.  Unbelievable scenery.  Had to learn to watch out for the 'free range' animals.  Being from the northeast I had no idea what those signs meant, until I came upon a bunch of cattle standing in the road.  Now I know.

I've also driven the NY, VT, NH route as well since I live down in NJ.  Also great scenery if you go at the right time of year - spring or fall.  But to me the desert southwest was amazing.  Most likely because I had never been in those environments/elevations before.

Now I'm starting to acquire the skills to restore bikes, go figure.  Before I would fix any problems with a cell phone and credit card.

So many happy miles to you.

And I'm kicking myself that I didn't get a kit sooner ( I just pm'ed him yesterday).

Please somebody take up the torch and make this kit...or if somebody has a spare kit sitting in their garage please sell it to me!!!

Well Gordon, it sounds like you may be in our neck of the woods if all your plans come together, so remember you're welcome here. Consider it appreciation of your handy work.

I've been making noise about riding more, part of the reason we did Barber in the fall, bloodywork sure does get in the way.

My kit is still in limbo too, but there is a plan!

Gordon,

Good for you! Plenty of unknowns for you to tackle and plenty of time left however we both are on the downhill side realistically so we'd better do it while we can!!

I decided it's a big world, my world was VERY small, and I'd missed most of ithe big picture. I then started asking "why not" rather than "why". Since that point 10 years ago at the young age of 47 we moved to Colorado with our then 2 year old daughter. The old 750 wasn't dependable enough at that point and I bought my first Harley in 2001 and started to learn to properly work on the 750. All you guys have been my inspiration. Since then I've ridden over 30,000 miles on the Harley all over the western US and Canada. JUST AMAZING!! We did, probably, our best in a lifetime, dive trip to Palau for 3 weeks last year. JUST AMAZING!! Don't know how long I'll be around to continue. All I gotta say is - GO FOR IT!!

I'd be humbled to provide any input you might need on riding the west. That 1300 is fantastic. I've toyed with the idea of one of those or a Beemer. Our police department switched from Harleys to the 1300 and tell me they are just fantastic especially the ABS. All I've gotta say is it's a damn good thing we only have a 2 & 1/2 car garage. I'd also love to accompany you some of the way when you get out west. If you ride through Colorado I'd be honored to have you stop over at the Griffin place.

Enjoy youself sir!

Jerry
