GOT THE BIKE!!!!
« on: May 04, 2009, 08:42:16 AM »
WHOOO HOO!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

so my bike has arrived.
I have not got it started yet. the PO (who bought it in a lot...it had been sitting in storage) said that he had taken the airbox off and pot his hand over the intake to create suction the first time he started it. he also said that he had a charger on it. (he has since put a new battery in)
anyway im gona take the air box off and try that.

I know that there is a list of things to check with no start so if someone could run them off for me that would be great.
I am a newb, and you will not offend me if you  by suggesting basic stuff.

one last thing before i get a better look at it, and I hope I can get this answered forst cause i need to get the bike into the garage and off the sidewalk.

the bike is very hard to push, i would have a good deal of truoble moving it alone, dont have anyone around  help at the moment...the indicator light says that the bike is in neutral. is this just how these old bikes are? I have only every been on a newer bike.
the wheels do turn just not very easly.

Sounds like your front caliper is dragging, loosen the bolts and try again.
If the fuel is coming out of the tube, the floats just stuck. Give her a couple taps with a screwdriver handle and see if it stops, you're gonna have to rebuild them or clean em anyway so, have fun!  ;D
What year model and what'd ya give?

There are free manuals in the FAQ section. You should just start reading the FAQ section. I have read and read FAQs just to absorb it all.

Get a smooth piece of wood or rubber mallet, and give the calipers a little rap, may want to put a rag between if they are minty.
Oil your chain, make sure its turning freely.

not sure why you would put you hand over the carb??

Yep, grab the shop manual for your particular machine. Way better than the Clymer or Haynes.

Front caliper should be on the left of the bike (if you're sitting on it) front wheel clamped onto the rotor. I think mine are 14 mm bolt heads.

three calipers tapped, the bike is in the garage.
even though it seemed to stiffen up again after  i used the brake to slow it down.
but i will worry about that after i get it started.

I am ready for a start up trouble shooting list if anyone has the time.

Here's what I checked to get mine fired up for the first time:
Checked oil level.
Pulled points cover took fine sandpaper and scuffed up the points
detached the fuel line and turned petcock "on" and took a fuel sample.
If fuel looks ok, and comes out in a steady stream, hook it back up.
Pulled each plug individually and checked for spark by slowly pushing kicker.
plug everything in, charge battery to full and start.
Some people say chock is not needed when warm outside, but i always use mine on "cold" starts.
This should be enough to get it fired, I wouldn't recommend riding it without a more thorough checklist though.

1) dump old gas from tank  :D

Putting your hand over the intake like that, is the old-school/poor-man's manual carb choke.  You shouldn't have to do that if everything's working right.  There's a shot in The World's Fastest Indian of Burt (Anthony Hopkins) doing this at the start of the film when he's starting the bike.  Nowadays (ie the last 38 years) we just yank on the choke lever.  Needing to do this is, imho, a symptom of dirty carb jets.

Regarding the brakes, if tapping them freed them up, but they tightened up again when you used the brakes and won't let go, that says to me that the pistons aren't retracting into the calipers properly.  This is usually due to bad caliper piston seals.

Fortune cookie #1 say:  "I see carb cleaning in your future, followed by syncing feeling."

Fortune cookie #2 say:  "Replace caliper piston seals to unbreak brakes."

Fortune cookie #3 say:  "You can tune a CB750 but you cannot tuna fish, so tune up your CB750!"

Seriously though:

1. Clean carbs.
2. Change oil
3. Cam chain Adjustment
4. Valve adjustment
5. Timing adjustments

That will probably get you up and running unless there are deeper issues.  Then,

6. Carb sync
7. Brake overhaul and fluid replacement
8. Inspect wheel bearings
9. inspect swingarm bushings
10. Lube or replace steering head bearings.
11. new tires (probably)
12. New chain (maybe)

That will cover the basic safety items.

Do post some pics when you get a chance.

cheers
mystic_1

Sometimes a quick rap with the deadblow will free them up - at least long enough to move the bike around...

when I check the plugs:
am I just looking into the end of cord that attaches to the plug?
or do I need to take the plug out attach it back to the cord and see if it sparks at the end of the plug?

by the way the bike sounds like a car that is trying to start when the battery is dead, is it likely that a month old battery would die so quickly?

BINGO
sounds like a car that is trying to start when the battery is dead
Like "chuh chun nuh chuh chun nuh" or "Click click click"
hehe. (I work at a dealership, I get to trouble shoot customer percieved "illness" alot.)

No, But it happens, check the acid (should have levels on side of battery) and give her a full charge before you call it quits with the battery that's in there.

Not too hard to do.  There a ton of threads on this topic here on the forum and some of them even have pictures.  As for the brakes I agree with Mystic, sounds like you need new seals (just went through that myself).  Neither of these are too hard to do.  Read the manual when you get it and use the forum search to find common questions.  THere's also a FAQ section that has a lot of useful info.  Good luck and post some pics.
