My '81 CB650

Well I got my carbs and tank back from the shop on Saturday. Painted the tank and side covers, everything dried and and reasembled by Sunday night. At this point all I wanted to do was to see if she was going to start. ??? I put the key in and tried but no luck. :'( So I just thought, 'what the hell?!' and plugged the battery up to the charger before going to bed. The next day after work I thought I'd give it another shot. And...vroooom!  ;D She started right on up. No problems as of yet. I'll put some pictures up later tonight.

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

well now that I got everything running again I got another problem with it. At lower rpm's there is a tapping noise coming from one of the left two pistons/valves (when your sitting on the bike). I suspect a sticky valve, but I'm not sure. When I was putting on the nex exhaust I noticed some oxidation inside the engine. Any help?

If the bike is running OK but not 100% you should probably check those valves.

Unfortunately I don't know what the bike rides like when its 100%. I got it around mid March and have only put about 200 miles on it. Any ideas on the sticky valve? Easy ways to fix it without pulling everything apart?

I would first take the inspection covers off on top of the engine,then you can see and feel your rocker arms....set/check your valve clearance on all valves and adjust your cam chain tensioner .....

running some seafoam in your gas can help clear up sticky valves over time... or maybe just prevent them?

Mate if the bike has been sitting for any time and you haven't ridden it far either I'd check the valve clearances, the plug condition, the airfilter (dump it if in doubt makes big difference to 650's) then ride it like you stole it..........as much as possible..........things get sticky when not used....the more you ride it the more you will understand it.

it takes ALOT to get valves to  get "sticky"......my bet is valve clearance.....but them again,that's just me. ::) ::) ::)

Well since its running now I try to ride at any and all chances. I have thought of dumping the air filter. And I'm pretty sure (100%) that the bike was sitting for a while before I got it, even though the guy I bought it from said it had not been sitting. After I bought it I changed the oil (was black), spark plugs (were black and rusted), plug wires (dry rotted), fuel filter (was brown) and drained the tank of gas (looked like muddy water), and new exhaust.

Not the clearance is an issue, it's that more clearance helps eliminate the heat buildup problem due to LACK of material near the exhaust valves to draw out that heat, and dissipate it.

And the extra clearance gives the exhaust valve more "seat" time, allowing more heat to be drawn out and dissipated through the head fins.

With the 4-1 pipes it probably won't do much more than 60 mph on the highway. Ditch the cover and you can peg it easy.

I actually already got a fix for the airbox cover. I cut a wedge out of it with my dremel and cut a thin line into the side of the side cover infront of the airbox cover. As for the 4-1 pipes I can easily get 75+ on the highway.

75+ ..?????   I got mine up to 110 last year...buddy beside me on his shadow,both had the same reading.....it might have had a little more,but it was kinda dark,so we chickened out.....

Check out Marti's latest rebuild thread, that's what happens when you top-out at 110 ha ha barbqed pistons. :D

Steady as you go then if this is your first bike and big ups to you for picking such a beastie as the CB650 to "learn" on.
Speed comes with confidence, in your machine and your own abilities.
I've always found that treating all other road users as complete morons has extended my lifespan, trust no one or their indicators (winkers-blinkers?). ;D

In top shape mine has pegged the speedo.
'79 cb650 speedos highest MPH reading is 120.
Non stock motor(bored, ported), non stock gearing(16/39) and a 130/90-17 rear tire.



They will take it, just not long.
:)

But 2nd will do 65, so whats that saying about me?

YUP!

And taking it within your riding limits is best for you, the bike, and the cleanup crews/EMT's.
I pushed it hard 2 ort 3 times(top speed)... and i'm well and happy with having done it, but it scared the holly jebusus outta me too. Wouldn't do it again unless on a track though.

yeah, I like wringing out 65 mph at 5-7k... it's good times... sounds good... but it's about feeling secure in your abilities.

I came across a couple of "morons" during my first ride around the area. I spotted one cage trying to turn out right in front of me coming from a parking lot into the left lane and then not more than two seconds later another one from the right side. It seems that most people around here can't drive very well.
