Exhaust gaskets

I just want to verify. Do you have to buy a new set every time you remove the exhaust? From my research I'm getting mixed answers.

depends on how cheap you are.(or more correctly how broke you are)
I have gone both ways(that sounds wrong)

I am willing to use them 2-3 times without any sealant, and if adding sealant(high temp silicone or whatnot) up to 5 times.
Depends on how much(if any) they leak.

Do you HAVE to?  No one has a gun to your head.

Are you SUPPOSED to?  Yes.

Worst thing that happens is an exhaust leak, then you have to drop the pipes and spring for new gaskets.

They're not leaking at all as it is, but I was going to pull them off to paint them. I believe they are the original headers, but I know the muffler isn't stock. Those gaskets are pretty cheap, but I just don't want to spent money that doesn't have to be spent. Since this bike has seen 3 owners, including me, I have no idea if the gaskets have been reused.

If they don't leak, is there a need to replace them?  I wouldn't, but then again they should never leak with new gaskets.

So, I'll try with the old gaskets and if they leak I'll get new ones. Simple enough. Thanks.

I had a similar problem with my bike and it turned out to be a crack behind the exhaust flange, but it may just be that your pipes need to be retensioned.

Yeah check that the bolts that hold them on to the engine are tight

Yup they were tight. Loosened everything, reassembled and now the pipe is loose. Its like theres isnt even a gasket in there. Just waiting on new gaskets.

Anyone ever doubled up on gaskets?

Its a Kerker 4-1.
