mrosso,

I see the Honda piston ring clamps and blocks in your latest photos.  Mind sharing where you got them and how much they cost?

Sure, they were about $35-40 a pair. I got them online from one of the usual suspects, can't remember right now, but something like cmsnl, babbitsonline, crotchrocket.com, speedsupplies, etc. Like most of the parts/special tools I've bought for this bike, some of them are going on 3-4 years back. It's been a sloooowww build. I do remember that I found the part number and did a google search and that brought up a site. I bought two pairs (thinking they only came one to a package - they actually came two to a package). I have two pair I will probably never use again. You want one for $26 shipping paid (continental US)? If so, they're yours. I will tell you, I found them really tough to use. It may have been because of the 836cc kit and HD studs, but I would not use them again. In retrospect, I wish I would have gone the large hose-clip route.

Stoopid, stoopid, stupid! While dropping the cylinder block on the pistons and studs, I used a plastic hammer to "tap" down the block. Crap! Nice crack in the top fin. Stupid!

Oh, I'm sure you're not the first one who has made that mistake. And I'm sure you won't be the last. Everything else is looking good, though.

Mines got that same piece missing, completely gone. I have it and will try to JBWeld it back on.

I don't remember breaking it, but seeing as how I have the piece I must have.

Cool, despite all the setbacks, your motor is looking really nice.  You DO realize any 750 you ride after this just won't do, right?  Here's Mike after you torque down the head and get it in the frame:  "I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you didn't send your head to me to get it ported/polished.  This will have to be rectified.  Better now than 100 miles down the road."   :D
That's funny. ;)

Still here; although I have been off the project for a few months now. Got engaged, boutght a house, moved, etc. I'm still on the mission, though. Just picked up some Excel rims and spokes from Buchannan with my bonus $ (don't tell the fiance). I now have a garage! No more working outside in 115 degree heat or 36 degree cold. I'm dreading the next step: polishing. I'll post more when I get some progress. This is turning out to be a four-year project! Thanks for the inquiries, though.

Glad to hear everything is fine, good for you to finally have a garage.

Cheers, Rob

I'm also in the market for some lightweight rims.  Thanks for the heads up on the Buchanan Excel rims.  Glad to hear that you're still around!

Which rims did you get?  Shouldered?  Dimpled?  Non-dimpled?  I'm wondering which to get myself....

bump for this too!  i'm looking to get 18's front and rear with SS spokes, should be a sweet setup!!  if you don't mind my prodding, how much did you spend on the wheels, you know - for budgeting reasons?   :D

The Excels are shouldered. I'm dropping to an 18" in the front. Looking at putting a pair of those Firestone vintage tires like Greenjeans put on his awesome BOTM 750.

I can't remember exactly, I think it was about $650. I'd have to dig up the receipt to be exact. Prices are on their webiste.

Saw you were online so maybe I can catch you before you logoff...

Just curious, why the decision to drop to an 18" front?

I want a more vintage look. I also think it will make the GT750 drum brake look huge(r). My only worry is that is will tilt the stance of the bike a bit. I want to keep a nice vintage level look.

Were you going to keep the front fender?  If so, I wonder if it would look funny with a smaller wheel?  Otherwise I suppose you could get a support brace and go fender-less.

Yeah, I want to keep the fender if possible. I'm hoping those fat Firestone tires will fill the space up.

You're build has inspired me to buy a set of cases for a K2 and start a 2nd engine for my bike. Can't afford (don't want) to take it off the road to use the existing engine but this looks like great fun. Thanks for the thread.
