What Would You Have Done?
« on: June 20, 2009, 03:02:19 PM »

Now, I'm open to both sides of this and I wanted all to know that, because I expect to hear from both sides of this. ;)

Well, my Daughter and I were coming back from being up in Fort Smith (about 15miles away) and was getting ready to pull onto US hwy71 from a side road. The outside lane was clear and there was a black late model Chevy 4dr truck puling a trailer and was a bit away from where I was sitting and I pulled out (flooring my van, like I always do, not wanting to disrupt traffic any more than possible. That truck was movving a bit faster than I realized (or he speed up, like some have been known to do) and he ended up pulling out around me, even though I was up to about 55 or so by that time. As this sucker went by, he flipped me off! ::) Gotta tell ya that, that really got me (but I just smiled and waved at him). Well, he went on a little ahead of me and pulled over in my lane, slowing down some, so that I'd have to slow also. I watched the outside lane as best that I could and when the time looked good, I pulled over and nailed my van. He tried to keep me from passing him, but it didn't work. I pulled up whead of gim enough that I could easily pull back over and, just a little ways up the road, I pulled over to get off of that road (to get on home) and as he went past me, he rolled his window down and was yelling something, to which I just smiled again and waved. My daughter said he was shaking his fist (I didn't see that).

Now, if I had of been in his possition (and I have so many times), I will pull into the ouside lane, if I see someone wanting to pull onto the rioad (if it is clear to do so, and it was). Every day, I see folks who might very well be decent folks but either don't think about doing things like pulling over so others might get out or such as that. Or they are just to preoccupied with getting to where they are going.

                So, what do YOU think?

                So, what do YOU think?

Dude was being a dick.  Not much more to it.

Sure, I've been know to show a finger to the occasional driver who pulls out in front of me when they could have waited two more seconds and come in behind me, but I'm not gonna pursue the matter and harass them further on down the road.

You handled it perfectly.  There's no sense responding in kind to someone acting as he was.  It never cools them down, and may in fact goad them to something a little more violent than shouting and fist shaking.  Good on ya for the way you dealt with it.

The fact that he continued after a finger is considered road rage by the police.  And blocking you is clearly unsafe at any time.  I'd have called the cops.  You did nothing wrong by misjudging his(probably above the speed limit)speed.  The fact that he passed you at 55 proves that.

i'd have thought it too. you did right though Bill, reacting to an a-hole like that is just asking for trouble

I appreciate it guys! For one thing, I had my Daughter with me and, if it would have been just me (along with the date being a few years back), I probably would have reacted somewhat differently. I actually never thought of calling the cops and the thing is, I have the local PD, the Sheriff's AND the State Police numbers in my cell phone. Never really thought about at what point that it clearly became road rage either. Mark's response would have clearly solved the problem. Ha! Ha! Kidding! Probably would have given my Daughter an Anxiety attack!

I was on a trip out to NC riding on Hwy 30 approaching the Smokies.  My brother in law Cory was riding ahead in the right lane, I was in the middle and our friend Jim was trailing back.  Cory passes a large diesel pickup with a loaded trailer on the right and changes to the left lane to pass a slower car, and I speed up to make the same lane change before I get trapped behind the car.  I made the lane shift with plenty of room to spare and continued going faster than traffic (I definitely didn't cut anyone off), but apparently the pickup didn't like what I did.

He sped up and tailgated me, so I casually got back into the right lane.  He pulls up alongside and starts shaking his fist and yelling at me through his closed window, and I return with a shrug and a nice fat bird.  This apparently pisses him off even more and he jerks the truck toward me like he's swerving into my lane.  I jam the brakes and back way off, he shoots ahead and swerves into the right lane around my brother in law.  Cory falls back to me and starts waving at me with a "What the #$%* is going on" look.  I shrug and tell him we need to stop up ahead.  We pull into the next gas station and Cory asks why I didn't want to go after him.  I say, "Hey, he's in a F350 with a fully loaded trailer.  It's obvious he's a complete douchebag and he could easily squash me if he wanted to."

Road rage is for douchebags, and returning the favor just seems to get people hurt or killed.  You did the best thing by smiling and waving, Bill.  There's nothing that pisses off pissed off people more than being congenial  ;D

In addition to all the guys who pointed out you did basically right; you modeled for your daughter some maturity and restraint.  Who knows when and how valuable that lesson will prove to be?  She now has a clear image and contrast in her mind of a jerk and a man with dignity.  I know which model she'll draw on when she needs it.  Good for ya.

      Thanks Guys,

Yeah, it really makes you wonder where SOME folks get off. ::)
All it takes is just a bit of effort to be courteous and have less problems. I have to say thay there have been times that I would like to have gone after an idiot like that AND the one that Dan told about.  Thing is, nowdays, SOME of those idiots might be carrying a gun and do something REALLY stupid. That type of behavior is really
demostrated alot, down in Little Rock and that is only ONE or the reasons why I'd NEVER move back down there (Wife's family is down there and she'd like to move back). I agreed to (eventually) move to my Dad's place (about 40miles West of L.R.) and she could go down and see her family or they could come up. ;)

Hey Medic, appreciate the kind words about trying to be a good example for others. I have told my Daughter several times that there are so many people who are only thinking about themselves and where they are going (to work, to lunch, home from work, to the lake for the weekend, coming home from there, etc, etc ), while ignoring the needs of others. I just mainly try to do things the way I was taught by my Mom and Dad, passing that on to my Daughter also.

                                   Later on, Bill ;)

I would have followed him to his home, tied him to a tree and burned everything he owns while he is helpless and forced to watch. Then after all the theatrics I would cut him loose and say "I'm just Joshin' ya guy, take care! Oh by the way, next time you want to play stupid f#ck f$uck games, make sure the person you are messing with isn't capeable of this.".

Okay not really, people do that to me all the time when I drive the delivery truck because they know I can't do a hell of a lot about it but man does it peeve me.

There are a lot of cry-babies on the roads.  That guy was a cry-baby.  People think of themselves first and don't care about others.  Seems like there's a lot of these type of stories here lately.

You handled the situation well.  One time I flipped off someone and they simply waved back.  It made me feel embarrassed.

Some guy cut me off once and then tried to prevent me from passing him (my perception). I was so pissed that when I finally did make a move to get around him, I was flipping him the bird and looked over to see him snickering and doing the 'kissy face' :-* :-* at me. He looked so much like a cartoon character -that damn cartoon dog 'Smedley' comes to mind - with a big bushy moustache and small dark round sunglasses. Totally made me drop my guard and laugh like crazy at the absurdity of the whole thing.
I waved and continued on my way without making a further ass of myself.

Again I agree with the guys who said you provided a good model for your daughter.  I myself drive an under-powered s-10 pickup truck so I cannot intimidate anyone.   When I'm on my motorcycle, I am totally defensive.
The best one I have experienced is some jerk tailgating and crowding everyone so he could hurry up ahead of the traffic.  He was right next to me and tailgating the car in front of him and flashing his hi beams even though the other car had nowhere to go.  I pulled back so the guy being tailgated could move into my lane and let Mr. Road Rage get by.  By the time I was back far enough back, the tailgater shot around the other car, honks his horn and shoots the guy the finger.  Thats when the red and blue lights and siren came on.  He just flipped off an unmarked State Trooper!  That made my day.   I'm not sure about other states, but if you are on Colorado Hiways, watch out for those Ford Crown Victoria's with the too dark window tint. ;D :D

Bill as far as daughters go the one that would have gone and had a talk with the idiot, she used to walk to work in Ottawa past a homeless shelter and one of the bums tried to put the moves on her and wouldn't take a polite no for an answer and not long after that she took up boxing and when she moved to T.O. she started training  with a one time contender for light heavy of British Empire can't remember his name, but any how she's convinced that if her husband is not around and she's in a bad situation "whoever" is going to suffer before she goes down, and I agree, you have to look after yourself all things being equal. Don't look for trouble but if it finds you, either run from it or make sure that trouble bleeds.
