CB500 / 550 cylinder studs
« on: July 01, 2009, 05:26:01 PM »
We have had two people this week ask if we made these as they are apparently no longer available from Honda. Can someone confirm this?

We are starting on a run of 8 mm studs, and will make some if Honda no longer has them.

I just ordered and received (one) replacement from (I think) Western Hills Honda. It was the shorter stud and I ended up not using it anyway but had no problem getting it.

Don't know if this helps, but that's all I got...

Kibblewhite made them a long time ago. If you made 25 sets or so I'm sure you would sell them here.....not all at once but they would go especially with a push from the forum. Nice call on your part...maybe the moderator will sticky it.

If the price was fair they would sell. Also would have to be a strong studs for people like me wanting to do a big bore on their 550's.

Cylinder studs would definitely sell. I personally don't need them for the time being, but if I ever make the 550 a big bore I'd be interested. Us 550 guys should get together and make a list of things we'd like to see available  ;)

Yes finding parts for a 550 is sometimes a pita.  I've serched all over and can't seem to find bearing and such for rebuilding my spare motor. Only thing I've found but saw one was a gasket kit. But was only for the head.  A full gasket kit would be nice and bearing for the crank ect.  I havnt been able to find piston rings either I got a set off ebay but it was for one piston.  I do plan when my bike is done to do a big bore on my spare motor with a complete rebuild so a rebuild kit with gaskets bearings ect would be awesome if they had a full kit.

I just bought 550 main journal & rod bearings, that just may be luck that the ones I needed were available. Are you saying Honda isn't supplying rings for these?

Honda gasket kits aren't available, but individual gaskets are. I haven't been thrilled with too many of the aftermarket gasket kits, but I've heard some guys say Athena is passable, can't comment.

Please please PLEASE do not buy an Athena gasket kit. With fresh machining on the head and an Athena gasket kit, proper torque etc. etc. my engine poured oil. After a 5 mile ride my left pant leg was soaked. Got to TAS classic and get a Vesrah set, they are usually on back order, but I got mine eventually. After tearing the engine down and removing the Athena set and replacing it with the Vesrah set all oil leakage from the top end stopped. Along with the O-ring set from BryanJ for the oil pump cover, the only leak I have right now is from the drain plug which can be remedied on my next oil change with a new washer.

Piston rings are available from Honda only in standard size, you cannot get oversize pistons or rings from Honda.

Anyway, with all that said - should we start a thread and sticky it to assemble a list of 550 parts we would like to see? We could check Honda part availability and create a list from that. Over time perhaps some members could get the ball rolling on part sourcing and/or production, or we could band together with the most needed parts and contact Honda. Contacting Honda may not result in what we would like to see, but it would be worth a shot, no? It seems a pity that various consumables are not available through Honda. I can understand and appreciate the lack of hard parts, but a lack of certain bearings is unacceptable.

Anyway still, I think if you did a run of studs they would sell, especially for those who will be taking after Paul's build.

I don't get it. Honda doesn't make them anymore? So only individual parts dealers may have some (like where I got mine)?

Jay, are you talking about a stock replacement or something stronger?

As far as people talking about avaliability issues, I replaced nearly everything in the lower half of my 550 with no issues...

Edit: when I say replaced I mean seals, hardware etc not the major parts...

Ok called another dealer and they can get me the crank bearings, gasket set, and regular or oversized piston rings for my 74.  Now I just need to measure my crank journals and #$%* before I rebuild this puppy. Thinking I might find a decent engine case on ebay and start their and transfer all my parts from my 75 motor into the new case so I don't forget where they go.  Found a few for under $50 shipped.

Damn!  Wish you would have had this idea 6 months ago Jay!  I definitely would have bought a set for my top-end rebuild.  If I have to crack into it again, I'll buy some.

I got all the bearings, gaskets, etc through Honda Canada, everything I needed was available.

When you go to a dealer, go armed with part numbers.

Maybe the info people are getting isn't correct. Undoubtedly there will be some parts unavailable, how the hell can you be angry when the bike is thirty odd years old.

I'd definetly buy a set in the winter months, that's when most everyone is doing the serious surgery I'd bet. I'm going to beat on it this summer and nut & bolt it while cool wind blows.

A number of years ago, after the TQ Midget car racers quit using the Honda motor, we almost quit making those studs. Then we started getting calls saying they were no longer available from Honda.

Since then, we have sold more than ever.

Now in the last week I hear the same thing about the 500/550 from a couple of guys. Just want to find out if it is the same deal.

Click on crankcase and go down the parts list when it loads. Looks like you have a new project Jay.

I'm rebuilding now so you've got my interest. Studs and nut would be nice as a package deal.
I'll check the APE site often to see when they are available, or you could just post here with availability.
