How far do you go on a tank (CB750K)?
« on: July 12, 2009, 04:46:09 PM »
I went on a wonderful ride today and got 180 miles before I had to switch to reserve. I'd filled the tank almost to the brim at the start of the run.

I'm curious to know what kind of range the rest of you are experiencing?

It sounds about right. When I ride through the mountains it is a lot less. I get about 30 Mpg on the average.

That's kind of low isn't it?  I get 40 riding around town, 55 in the mountains and 60 on the open highway on my K1.

180? That's pretty good. I think the tank is 3.1 gallons before you hit reserve so that's actually crazy good (58MPG). I get a staggering 40MPG. Doesn't seem to matter highway/city/short trips/long trips.

Here in NY there is a lot of stop and go, I get about 150 per fill up. I am a bit over jetted. It may be my riding style. The mpg is not an issue for me since I am a pleasure rider. I read a report for the 70's that rated them about 35 mpg. 60 mpg is extraordinary, you must be doing something very right.

Which kind of begs the question. For you guys at 50MPG+ what's your setup? Mind running down what you think the trick is?

Newly overhauled topend?
Stock jets - airbox? Or not?
Sprocket sizes?
Etc, etc, etc.

My rides are between 80 and 150 miles of flatland rural riding at 45-55mph. I always start with a full tank and rarely get to reserve. Always 48-50 mpg. I'd expect reserve about 160 or so and something between 220 and 250 if I was going for bone dry. I'd guess 45mph is the optimum speed for gas mileage, based on I don't know what, but my CB seems like it will burble along forever at 3500rpm.

Mostly stock: 341s w/o silencer, foam air filter, 115 mains, 18-48 spr, 220lb rider (but also made 48 and 50mpg with passenger), suspected optimistic odometer/speedometer.

Hmmm, typical for me is sub 20 miles with an indicated 75 - 80 - 5000ish RPM. 18/48 sprockets. 110 mains. Stock airbox. Reasonably good/recent tune. Fresh everything but rings. 180lb rider.

Haven't had a chance to run a full tank out of it on the highway (yet) so my 40MPG is all mixed. I usually have to fill up about once a week - 120 miles.

The average for my K8 is around 51 mpg for small town and rural riding. Last measurement was two-up riding with full fairing and bags. There is nothing special about the bike outside of a K&N air filter.  It has always gotten great mileage, often making 250 honest miles on a full tank, especially back when it was new and got 54 mpg on the highway (it has a 5.1 gal tank according to Honda shop manual specs).

K8 tank is bigger than pre-77 tanks and do get more mileage/tank.

My CB750 K4 and K2, stock exhaust on both, stock filter and jetting, driven hard and fast at 4000 - 6500rpm get ~140 miles before hitting reserve. If I am really going easy then 150. Im a 190lb rider. Interestingly, going 2-up dosent seem to make much difference.

cheers
Andy

i just timed my bike and am getting better milage was 25..  but looking up now...  someone said something about brakes dragging... go for a ride dont use the front brake pull over (using the back brake) and feel if it seems hot... i am  just guessing but wouldnt the friction from a dragging brake cause  the disc to heat up?

I just went on about a 300 mile ride on Thur I had to hit the reserve with about 180 miles on the odometer (mostly highway) the speedo seems pretty accurate with the new tires one of the guys had a tom tom

puttin around town I have got around 280 before a fill up I was very luck I did not run out of gas

1976 550 f, I just put new retro dunlap tires on front and rear ( pretty hard). hondaman ignition, dyna coils, plugs, wires and new points from plate up 105 main jets and I think the needles are up one notch. It has stock filters and exhaust.

Yes it would... and I checked it right after I got it back on the road (stone cold) but not recently. Probably not the problem. Maybe I don't have a problem? Why do I need a problem?  ;D

I got just over 50 to US gallon on a woreout 836

Got about as high as 58 or 60 on a stock motored 73 with K&N straight individual filters and a header.

I am thinking all the ones under 35mpg have clogged emulsion tubes.

Hmmm, I rebuilt my carbs with K&L kits about 3 months ago so they "should" be all bright and shiny still. Hmmmm.

When I got my 73, I am not sure of the mieage, I think between 2 and 4 K.
Where I got the absolute best mileage was a sweet spot I hit around 8 or 10 K.. it was back in 76. :o

If I remember right, it got pretty good.mpg, then slowly crept up a bit better as it ran in a bit.. I probably had 115 or 120 mains.

I also recall, my buddy with the 71 812 saying that after it had a lot of miles, like 20K +, he was actually able to jet it down a size..

It seems to me CB750s hit a zone at a certain point, where it all starts working very nicely..(like to hear Hondamans thoughts on that)

On my 550F I get to about 110 before I have to flip on the reserve. That's roughly 32 mpg with a 3.4 gal tank which is way better than what I was getting before my top end rebuild. Last summer I was flipping on the reserve between 80 and 90 miles.

Nothing special on my K1.  It's a well worn 45K mile engine, original top end with 5 year old gaskets.  Stock idle jets replaced with 38's due to altitude.  UNI foam stock replacement filter in the stock air box.  Dyna-S ignition and 5ohm coils.  Stock size sprockets.  It's always kept in good tune and it never sits unused for more than a couple of weeks at a time in the Winter, which keeps the carbs in good shape.

My 77 750F hits reserve right around 180 if I let it go that long.  I'm running 110 mains instead of 105's, and raised the needles one notch.  I get right at 45 mpg.  The bike had 115's when I got it, and before changing to these settings, it got around 35.
