Where to Start

I'm not sure as to the why or how I fell in love with this bike, yes bikes like this but this one in paticular!
I'm starting with NO knowledge, little tools, no resources (before here)...the hardest part is catching onto the lingo...
Just a boy and the love of this bike



It started and ran until the first day I had it and fried the electrical









OOOOOOPS!!! Ya I get really hard on myself when I make rookie mistakes, being a rookie or not.

I knew I had to work with the carbs when getting it......







A little better? Thanks only to you!!!



I can still see some oxidation in the third one.






The basic cosmetic work I was planning went into some parts I wasn't.

Looking good so far all the answers you need to your questions are right here on this forum so don't be afraid to ask  ;) you should have a really nice bike at the end with a little patience and time  :), cheers Mick.

It has much love...besides a little cosmetic work it was running all season last year! Obviously the PO neglected the carbs but he had some fun on it!

$300?

Ya that's well worth it...even after I toasted the electrical.

Welcome Dan...now you know what the vintage cycle bug is all about.  Just something about these things that keep calling you.  I bet this will not be your last either.  Everyone on this site can see things in these unrestored bikes that most people can not see...the potential to be a real keeper.  Great to see what you found and it looks pretty complete.  You will gradually become very educated on your project.  Those carbs look pretty nice and I bet even surprised you.  The wiring you can deal with and that first ride will be cool.  Keep us informed.

Congrats on your purchase and your start into the hobby.  You'll get alot of help here.  Forgive me for saying it, but your bike looks like ass, but I'm sure these fine fellows and some hard work on your part will change that.

Eh, the uglier the start the greater the sense of satisfaction when you are done (ok, no such thing, but when it looks tons better  ;D )

Before last year I knew nothing about motorcycles, bought my first one, screwed up a lot, learned a lot, and now I am redoing one from the ground up sorta. And the neighbors keep bringing their motorcycles by when they have problems so I earn a bit of dough on the side, of course it all goes back into the bike or tools for the bike  :D

Look forward to watching your progress!

Sorta like the first time I saw an old trashed out 67 GTO in a farmers field.  I still want and love that car but he would never sell it....sure there were nicer ones out there but I WANTED THAT ONE!!!!

I totally understand that! I saw this bike then decided I was serious about buying one, shopped (Craigslist mostly) and ended up always going back here. It drove my girlfriend nuts for 2 straight weeks!!

A paint job, new seat and some chrome cleaning and it'll look at least presentable wouldn't you agree?

Dan...I agree...paint, seat, chrome cleaning and regular degreasing it will look real nice.  If you have the $$$ opt for replating chrome rather than buying NOS chrome if it is salvageable.  It is no secret Honda OEM chrome is poor quality.  
The oxidation on the side engine covers can be cleaned and polished to look new again.  Just get yourself a nice buffer from Sears and some red, green and white rouge.  Below is a pic of mine from my 1970 KO.  There is some nice stuff on this board about polishing technique.  That will be down the road for you.  Last, do not use a pressure washer on the bike.  You will open up more problems if you do that.  Looking forward to your project results.  Let your girl know if she can't find you...your with your bike... ;D  Click the pic to enlarge.

For sure Dan, you will need an impact driver to get the screws off the side engine covers if you take them off for polishing or to change leaking gaskets.

Finally the electrical is fixed!! Thanks to a friendly face from the forum.

I pride myself in meeting the absolute best people in life, I'm not sure why they find me but they always do. Since the beginning of the summer I've come to learn that people with bikes are probably the most helpful group of people I've met to date.

Now I'm just looking for coils and intake boots and he should run!

No big updates as far a picts are concerned. Now its not getting spark, so I have a new set of coils to put on!

I just really hope he'll start this season!?! Living in Mi its getting close to the end. 

I think about what he's going to look like on a daily basis! lo.
