I cringed at the point where he said he "started the bike" and didn't bother to go any further.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Yowza.  The Gixxer forum seems to be a never-ending supply of info on what never to do to your motorcycle.

Or, you know, your hand.

Edit: Seriously, be warned: that's not something you want to look at.

It's very easy to get too comfortable around machines.  I know a few machinists that have lost digits.  Luckily, I was never one of them.

Edit:
I gotta hand it to the guy... instead of rushing to the hospital, he grabs his camera and starts snapping pictures.  Then when he gets back from the hospital (the same day), he hops on the internet.  He's got guts.

Thanks for that post. I can laugh because I have done plenty of stupid crap like that, it is good to get a reminder of unsafe consequences.

I saw a friend of mine start to clean his chain like that.

I stopped him before anything bad happened though. I'm glad i was there. Some people just don't have much common sense.

Does anyone else not clean their chain? I don't. I just keep it lubed up. It gets greasy and nasty but i would think that would keep moisture out. I know from working on old cars that the greasier and dirtier a bolt is, the easier it is to get out. I always put some thick grease on new brake line fittings and such.

They last longer if you clean them regularly as it reduces the grit acting on the bushings.

The idea of holding a rag up to a moving, chain-driving ANYTHING though....  ??? ??? ???

Well bad mouth him but at least he owned up to his mistake and posted it as an example for others to learn from. That counts for something.

There is good reason for posts of that kind.  It's not bad to have constant reminders that  machinery is dangerous.  And there are some who need to be informed, as they don't have the slightest idea of what could happen.
