It runs, not great yet. The center plug wires were both broken and had older plugs than the end cylinders. Lazy PO. I burned a pint of fuel on the lift. The points and advancer need attention, the advancer appears to have little to no spring tension. One set was firing on T not F. The good news is the pan and oil pump screen were very clean, I'm giving it a dose of fresh oil and will run it some more, I may put on the back-up fuel tank, borrow a battery and go for a ride.

I'm wondering if there is a replacement round plug like on the key switch available. This bike had it removed totally. I may post on the tech thread.

Vintage connections now has the round ignition switch plugs in stock. I put the key switch back in the stock bracket and found a suitable right front turn signal. Then repaired the broken tach with a few parts left from another project. It's looking mostly complete except the fork gaiters aren't on yet. I have a nice set of originals to use. For now it's going to be made complete with genuine (old) parts. It only needs a few things, both sidecovers are cracked but I have a set of F/B's repops  that I was going to try to match the paint fade on my sandcast with, they'll work in place of originals. I'd love to boil out the gas tank but both of the hose faucets are unhooked right now for siding work. It's an outdoor job for sure.

I clean the carbs with spray, then brush, then ultrasonic. Then repeat like the shampoo bottle says. Then more carb cleaner with compressed air. Guitar strings before during and after. Put them on the bike IV bottle filters clean fuel line and what do I get? dirt in the float bowls. So, I do it all again.
And the point is?  I'm not surprised, these things had some nasty tar in them. I reread Hondamans book and got a couple tips. Wish me luck. It's running good on 1,3and 4 are running but 2 is a little reluctant to heat up. 1 is dripping, I'll recheck the float. It has a newer one and hasn't gotten happy in it's new spot yet.

I spot cleaned them, #1 was leaking so I unbent the float so it doesn't catch on the bowl gasket. Checked for liquid in that float and recheck the float level yet it still overflows. I can blow into the fuel feed and the needle valve cuts off the air, It must be either the float or a cracked overflow. AHA! come to think of it that carb had a squashed float so it probably froze at some point.
Next is new spark plug on #2 and float bowl check on #1.

I pulled them again, replaced the needles and seats, checked the #2 pilot jet, it was plugged tight, either I missed something and it plugged again or didn't ever get it open. I re-checked the float levels, they're a tiny bit high but with the pods I figured WTH. I cut an oil bottle, made baffles for the pod filters and spiraled them in, too bad I can't get stock velocity stacks in there. Or can I?
I took it for a short ride, it's got all 5 gears and pulls good. The 1 into 4 carb cables appear new and the jetting must be close. I'm hoping for a few minutes of good weather tomorrow, I'll get it on the highway for a good test.

I got out the NOS Craftsman dwell meter and timing light, I re timed 2-3 1-4 was good. I left the dwell alone at 23.5*. I read 24.5 is right but less can be good for more charge time too.  This beast idles awesome but a little fast. I suspect a little air leak around 2's carb isolator. If I spray brake clean on it, the idle goes down until it evaporates. I have to admit I don't have a set of synch gauges. The mercury escaped into my brothers shop but it got washed away when 5 gallons of carb cleaner ate through it's can. I like the deluxe set from cb750.com. They run around $150.

I do Larry, it's been #1 on my list of need to get for a long time, I saw this one recently in a build thread. I googled it and see the alpha pro on Amazon for $88. A better deal than cb750's $150 price. I'm not a fan of amazon really.  Over $200 at summit racing wow.
I really enjoy bringing these old rides back to life, it's too bad I don't seem to be good at selling them afterwards. I've only really sold bikes three times and feel like I gave them away each time.

I'm starting the title quest tomorrow, if Illinois won't co-operate I'll go the Vermont route. I offered the PO a hundred to work it out but no dice. I'll start with a VIN check.

The Illinois DMV doesn't have the VIN in the system. Anyway, I rode it through the neighborhood and it ran pretty good. The center coil wires crumbled and needed to be trimmed a couple times. I may swap that coil for a better one and took time today to prep the tank for de-rusting, it's not too bad but with the freshly cleaned carbs it needs to be nice inside. Photo is the three K0's

Ideally I'd like to move the mags from the green bike to the black tank and make the green bike restored and the recent one the restomod. I have a 70 engine for the green bike to rebuild too.

My plan was keep the red sandcast bike original and the blue green bike was going to be the resto mod. Now that there may be a K0 project bike it makes sense to move the hot rod parts to bike 3 and continue to return blue/green to original appearance. This would be a long term deal depending on title status of the new find.
My plan was only three bikes licensed and insured so that could mean I'd let go of the gl1000. The alternative is to sell the K0's and spend the money on my 69 firebird. I'd still have my brothers one owner 74,  the drag bike project and my choice of something for long distance riding.
The garage is overfull so something has to give.  Who would have thought 10 years ago when I drug home three junk bikes to make one that ran that I'd end up with a collection?

Is there room or ability to not tick off the spouse by building a garage that is detached or extending your storage.

It's an attached 24x24 with a 24X36 attached to the back. It's pretty much all I have room for unless I get a yard barn. That would be silly, I just have too many toys. Too many carbs batteries and tires to maintain.  My wife's only rule is it all has to be inside, that rule self regulates the rest. I do store a car in the dragster trailer off season, it's a 1940 chevy business coupe, it's been a hot rod since 58 when a guy dropped a J2 olds in it, since then it's had a 348 4 speed, 392 hemi torqueflite and now a 355 small block 4 speed, 9" ford 3.25 posi. Like most of my junk, I got it cheap and spent a decade getting it running. I've owned the firebird since 70 and the coupe since 73. The racing keeps them stalled.
I really want a Roadster Shop spec full chassis for the car, about 15K rolling. That would require a sacrifice.

I rode #3 today, the plug wires on 2-3 keep crumbling. The idle went way up after it built a little heat and it was running on 3 cylinders. I'll check the timing advancer and carb boots, and put on another set of 2-3 coils.
The crash bars are still on it and I'm considering adding a few of the 70's cool (not popular now) accessories laying around the shop. There's a sissy bar that looks sportsterey and a Wixom fairing that needs long turn signal stems. In the big box of pegs there are aluminum footpegs that would fit the time period and probably something that will fit on the crash bar, maybe a set of 50's fog lights. The brown original gas tank is cleaned up and can go back on when the petcock turns up lol.
Right now the gl1000 has the gas tank and carb rack removed, it's all over the shop. Wow.

I'm thinking the #3 parts K0's wheels need rebuilt so I'm shopping for spokes. I have a proper two hole hub so I'll use it and then the diecast bike will be the no number motor, these stock wheels and 4-4 pipes away from being restored instead of a resto mod.

I met the PO of the brown 750 for a better bill of sale, he's leaving the area so it's just in time. I pinned him down on where he got the bike. It was in a  barn owned by the widow of a hoarder type guy that had multiple cars, trucks, bikes, boats, etc. Like 20 boats and 15 lawn tractors, one of which ran. The Honda was payment for helping her clean out the shed. It's not likely that guy ever had a title and if he did, even less likely she will ever find it.  It isn't in the Illinois system at all so no one's going to come looking for it and I'm free to try whatever method works.
