Addicted to watches...cheap and vintage
« on: October 03, 2009, 08:20:05 AM »
Well, I did it...I got addicted to weird russian watches and vintage watches as well...I went on a buying frenzy over the past week getting these:

Two new Russian watches:

Two vintage watches:

Oris Swiss made watch from the 30's?:

Russian Sniper WW2 watch:

I love this stuff now! Not sure what started the trend but it's fun and so far fairly cheap...i'm not spending 500 dollars on a watch...no matter how nice or collectible lol. These are all manual winding watches of course...no batteries present in these puppies.

Only vintage wwatch I have is a 1930's Movado.

I don't wear watches, and if I did, I wouldnt wear the Movado. Was my grandpas, and I wouldn't want to bang it up, so it sits in a safety deposit box :/
No.

Lol, yeah I do have one VERY nice watch, it was my grandpa's watch he was issued I believe in WW2. But that doesn't get worn either...safety deposit box for that one too...

I think the reason I got into these is because they are all fairly cheap, so I can wear them, use them, take them apart...and not mind too much if something happens to them. I have combined less than 150 dollars invested in these 4 watches. They all work great, keep good time, and i'm not paranoid whenever I wear one that something might happen to it.

I have a '56 model Omega Seamaster.  It is an automatic so it winds itself, but still no battery.  I love that watch.  I love watches, but i can't afford to spend any money on them with the car hobby and the bike hobby eating up all of my spare cash.

Yeah that one is pretty awesome, the back is clear too! Not that you can tell when it's on your wrist, but it's still just cool. That and the russian writing just adds to the weird but cool factor.

My grandfather's pocket watch, 18 jewel movement made in USSR.

I do not know it's age.

Cool Steam Engine on back.

Russian Sniper WW2 watch:

Actually that's a Nazi Waffen SS issue watch mate, but very interesting, nonetheless. If you don't like Nazi stuff, you can send it to me, I'll wear it! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Hey mate, check this out, a dude bought a Nazi SS watch just like yours for (are you sitting down?) 75,000 Euro's, that's about $100,000! You might have found a real bargain! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Not the same watch, but dang that would have been epic!  Seems like a cool hobby for sure, probably less expensive than cycles too :)

I think it is a German watch though, looks a lot like this one

The photo of what you have and what was here
http://antiqestore.com/luftwaffe-wss-vintage-wwii-german-pilots-wrist-watch-p-141.html

are different on the small disc hand side. Compare them carefully and you will see the differences. I'm saying yours is not looking like the cheap one is all.

You have to click on the "enlarge" version to see this on the linked watch.

LOL ohhhh ok i see what you are saying...sorry it's been a long day. Mine is small like the cheap one though...the expensive SS watches are freaken HUGE! Either way, I just plan on wearing these...not all at once. I might have the Oris and the SS watch appraised though just out of curiousity...doesn't hurt to see if i've made a savvy investment for once. Not like my CB750 project that'll never be finished lol.

Nope - and he doesn't have to say syrro either :D

I'm a sucker for watches too but tend to go for collectable more expensive ones and save up over a few years for them...there's just something irresistable about a well engineered watch. Alice Cooper is a big collector too apparently.

For the ultimate combination of watches and history, Romaine Jerome have just released a watch that has the bezel made out of iron from the hull of the Titanic! Bet that's not cheap :-)

Have any of you guys in the US seen a Franck Muller Crazy hours watch? Always wondered what that looks like in action...

Damn, now I want a Nazi watch! I'm not gonna buy one though, I'm saving up for some hard cases for my new Triumph Rocket III, but if I could afford it, I'd buy that $199 job, or maybe this repro on EBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200381461449&_trksid=p2761.l1259

It's fascinating, wanting a copy of a watch made by a former enemy, reproduced by a future enemy...............  ::)

Well the SS watch is bigger than I thought lol. Fuzzy picture but here it is on my wrist. It's about 20% bigger than any other watch I own!

UPDATE: Had this watch appraised a few weeks ago...was told it's worth a minimum of 2k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah you read that right...apparently it is a genuine Nazi SS watch that never left the russian factory in WW2. Since it has the correct date stampings on the movement, but no issue engravement on the back of the casing. That and it works VERY well.

But the guy who appraised it said it's only worth that much to the right crowd of people. He said most people that collect these want the actual issued ones. I take comfort knowing this was never worn by a Nazi officer during WW2...

Hmm you may have sparked a new interest for me Colin!  Those watches are really neat. I especially like the Oris Swiss watch.  Perhaps instead of buying a cheap timex every couple of years (they always break) I'll look for something old and interesting.
