Yea.....at least if they are fighting, you know they are at least awake. ;D  Now if you said this is why you don't want to get on a foreign airline that would make sense to me....

I still wonder.  ???

Do you also refuse to get on boats, trains, buses, cars, bicycles, and moving sidewalks, etc, because of fear a fight might break out?

...in India?

Sure you've heard it before, but it is the truth. One of the safest means of transportation known to man. The only safer means is Hovercraft which is a form of flying in itself. You have a better chance of being struck by lightning on your bike on a sunny day on a new york city street.

i know it's illogical and that flying is one of the safest forms of transpportation but ever since i was on a plane that slid off the end of a runway i've been petrified of flying

While I don't have any great fear of flying with some people it may be the idea of having absolutely no control.  You are essentially just Spam in a can.

Yeah, this was discussed in Freakanomics (I think). When you adjust the numbers to compensate for far fewer people traveling by air, the chances of a plane accident and car accident are similar, but people don't like the idea of giving up control.

But Bucky....ya got it all wrong.....you were not in an airplane that was flying when you had your incident....you were on the ground in a fancy trike......and talk about no control, what do you call riding down the street and cagers coming from every direction trying to eliminating you. Now a private pilot license today costs about 5-7K. To get to the point of flying the heavy metal, you will spend 20-25K in lessons/instructor fees, and ?various amount in fuel and aircraft costs to get to the point where you meet the minimum requirements. It has gotten very expensive since the increase in fuel costs.

In the early 80's it was about $3K to get a Private pilot's license.  It is about double that today, but the value of the dollar is about half what it was then, too. ::)

The amount it cost depends greatly on the individual.  If you fly every day, you learn much faster than if you fly once a month.  Also, individuals  often learn at different rates.  If you have never developed a rapport with any type of machinery, it is going to take longer, usually.  It is often true that the younger you are, the faster your learning rate.

But, you don't really need to get the the full private license to get over the fear of flying.

There is also the Sport pilot license to consider.

Be warned.  Flying is way more addictive than SOHC4 addiction.   :)

You should try it Bucky.
Once you get to the point of completing a 'solo' flight 8), you'll feel like the next goal is flying jumbos and fighters, not just worrying about riding in them.... ;D

I still remember the day I came in to school and they just handed me the keys and said "have fun"  ;D

I couldn;t believe they were giving me the keys to their plane to fly myself ::)

I'll wager, it took at least 4 hours after your wheels touched down, for your feet to arrive.. :)
Then there is that old piece of aviators' poetry.............".......reached out and touched the face of God...."..............(no religious connotations intended).

you suppose correctly sir. i wouldnt go up the statue of liberty when you could still do it, or the empire state building. my rule of thumb is no higher off the ground that i would be if i were sitting on a tall horse.
