1974 CB750K4 Rebuild Questions...

Hi Folks,

 I'm in the midst of rebuilding a CB750.  The bike is in decent shape, but certainly could stand some cleanup and some new parts.

 I've tried to remove the 'bolt' that holds the oil filter to the case.  It doesn't want to budge and my efforts to turn it have resulted a a nearly stripped bolt head.

 What do I need to do to get this off the bike.  It seems that I'll be needing a replacement part once I get it removed.

it isnt a wingnut on the bottom of the airbox holding it together? i didnt realize they used regular hex head bolts on these.

Read again...he said oil filter ;-)

Its a 12 mm nut that always gets stripped on the oil filter case. Get the 17 mm replacement but dont over-tighten when reinstalling. For now couple of options...cut a groove across the center of it and use a flat headed screwdriver or get a pair of vice grips and loosen that way.

 Thanks for the suggestion.  I figure at this point the original bolt is shot, so cutting a slot doesn't sound too bad.  Are replacements easy enough to come by?  You say, look for the 17mm version?

 Here's some more questions... I will likely repaint most or all of the frame.  What would be the correct black color and finish to use?  Is there a reasonably easy 'factory look' paint that people use on the CB frames?

 Also, what online site are people using for either OEM or NOS replacement parts (other than eBay)?

As the other poster mentioned Partsnmore carry the bolt as do Bikebandit, Z1Enterprises (fast shipping and good prices) etc...look in the FAQ for more vendors. Everything you even want is in the FAQ or do a search - this issue of the oil bolt has come up before many times.

Black frame paint - whatever you desire - expensive solution - powdercoat black. Cheap solution -black Rustoleum in a can - hard, durable and great finish..and it wont rust ;-) .

The thing I didn't mention about the oil filter cover removal...

 I did attempt to use a 'channel lock' wrench on the hex portion of the nut... Little shards of metal were the only thing to come off.  Its stuck tight for some reason!

 If the 'cut a slot' method fails, am I able to use an easy out or something like that (drill a hole and use the special reverse thread bit to turn the bolt)?  That would require that I drill a hole in the center of the bolt.

Try to hammer an 11mm socket on whats left,use good impact  quality socket if you have them-worked for me-----Eric

lots of pb blaster and if u cut a groove in it or whatever give it a few centered whacks it might help break it loose.... if u still cant get it ive heard of people cuting new edges on a bolt and using a smaller socket

 I've got the handlebars stripped down and I need to replace the grips.  Are these glued on?  Seems like the left one is glued to the bar and the right one is glued to the throttle tube.

 How do I replace these items?  Do the new ones need to be glued (to the bar and to the throttle tube)?

I have just cut off old grips in the past, being careful of the throttle tube of course.

usually glued on....if you are not going to keep them (not worth selling due to condition) then just cut them off. If they are good, any petroleum product should help loosen the glue

New question about the gauges...

Hi Folks,

 Still working on the 750... Having lots of fun!  I finally have the engine out of the frame and ready for cleanup.

 Here's what I'm working on as well:  I want to make the tach and the speedo nice again.  I have it mostly apart.  I was reading about how to remove the trip-meter reset knob.  I understand it needs to be turned conter clockwise.

 I don't see how I'll get this off... How do I hold the shaft from turning while I turn the reset knob?  Help, Please?

 Any additional words of advise as to actually opening the tach and speedo cans?  Seems like I'll have to uncrimp the metal to get them to come apart.

 Also, do we have a source for the tach and speedo overlays?  Thanks so much!

 While re-reading my post and looking again at the pictures, I noticed (for the first time) that the reset knob has a set screw.  Some WD-40 and a small screwdriver and its off!

 I would still appreciate some insight into the other issues.

These are overlays on my k5. Got them from ebay seller roberth9.
Cut the ring and re attached as per the supplied instructions. Split in ring is not visible when sitting on the bike, and must be looked for otherwise. I did these in 2003, this is what they look like today. Many other methods/overlays out there. I chose these and they worked out pretty well. There is a post in "tricks and tips" explaining how to get the ring off in one piece using a modified paint can opening tool if you don't want to cut it.

 Thanks for the reply...

 I'll go out and see if that seller still has any stock available.

 Your gauges turned out great!

 Mine will need a touch of paint on the painted portion of the 'cans'.  The outer baskets will likely need to be re-chromed. 

 I will try the paint can opener approach to opening up my cans.

 Anyone have a nice stock handlebar for me to use on my bike?  The original was bent.  I want to go with the stock look and have the wiring holes in the bar.
